Chapter 1 - an unlucky man

"11 years!" I bellow out, slamming my mug in outrage on the wooden table, the beer splashing against the cup, the foam running off it.

"Over a decade I worked for that company, busting my ass, loosing sleep from overtime and missing out on family events just for them to fire me!" I let out with fury backing my tone. I take a large swig of my booze, the foam now sliding down the side of my cheeks.

The smell of liquor waft around the building, The bar wasn't packed like most days, but the sounds of chatting and laughter can be heard everywhere. clinking of glass bottles and banging of pool balls bouncing of lf each other, everybody was having a great time.

I lean my arms against the table, my face all bright red from the last 3 beers I had drunk. My clothes, once a slick dark blue suit and slacks with a brighter blue button up shirt underneath, had become all disheveled and ruined by the stains of liquor I was drowning myself in.

My two drinking buds, who both had gotten fired from their jobs too, sat across from me at the table. Both becoming hammered from there own beverages.

The one on my left was Jason. A tall, lanky man will dirty blonde hair that hung down to his eyebrows who spoke with a monotone voice took a large gulp from his mug.

"honestly, if you had told me a year ago that i would end up getting fired like this, i would've just laughed and called you hilarious." He said to me. He was an old friend of mine who joined the company along side me.

After he had finished his sentence, the man sitting next to him lets out a long sigh as he rests his chin on the table.

He is a bit younger then me and Jason with short black hair and emerald eyes and was wearing a pair of oval shaped glasses. He was with the company for maybe 4 years give or take, and was one of our hardest workers. But he ended up being let go along side us.

"Well, ever since Martha became the new director, she had been on us like a hawk. Only a matter of time now before that company falls." Said Jason, flicking his hair back and taking a big gulp of his drink.

"Yeah well...where do we go from here though..." said the young man wearing a defeated expression.

We look over at him, our looks change from agitation to solace.

"Hey now, let not think about that alright. Leave it for tomorrow." Said the blonde one, trying to cheer him up.

"Yeah, your still young so I'm sure there will be someone willing to hire you." I say as well to try getting him in a better mood.

"Yeah, a much better chance than us old coots." Said Jason, patting his back.

The boy lifts his head up a little, hope can be seen flash in his eyes. Both Jason and I saw it and gave him a reassuring smile.

"Of course, we wouldn't say anything we didn't mean, ain't that right mark." Jason said, looking toward me.

I see them both stare at me before I scruff up the kids hair.

"Hell yeah. You'll be fine kiddo." I say before laying back in the chair.

I can sense my vision blur up and I start to black out as I heard Jason say something to the kid.

"You are gonna be having a kid of your own soon right?..."

***

I open my eyes once more to see the two carrying me with my arms on their shoulders though the rain. The sound of droplets hitting the sement walkway as we all by was pounding my head.

"You really did it tonight mark, haven't had to carry you back home since when, the Christmas party a few year back?" Jason remarks, giving a chuckle under his breath.

I look over at him, giving a grumbling noise as an retort. He just laughs at my response as we continue down the sidewalk. The sounds off automobiles racing pass echoed in my ears.

We had made our way to a crossroad I suddenly heard the sound of a woman screaming. Turning my head back I could see a child running, trying to grab his umbrella that flew into traffic. And as I was watching this, I could see a car hurdling towards the kid.

My eyes had widen, and without saying a word to the other two, I raced into the street hoping I can reach the boy in time. I can hear others take notice and commotion can be heard throughout the walkways. My two pals, who I had just darted away from, hollering for me to come back.

Ignoring them, I ran as fast as I could, trying to reach the kid. But I could see the car was approaching closer and closer, I knew there is no chance I can grab him and safely get us both away.

And so, with all my strength, I lunged toward him and shoved the kid towards the concrete sidewalk.

Seeing the boy fly back toward what I assume to be his mother, a wave of relief washed over me, before notice headlights inches from my face.

The one thing that came to my mind before the inevitable was... what an unlucky day.
