"I know." A pause. Then he asked, "But tell me … why were you so cruel to me?"
Ye Xinren exhaled sharply, his patience wearing thin. "I wasn't cruel. Your expectations made it seem that way."
"Is it because I was just a mere guard in that house?" The man's voice was quiet but sharp, cutting through the air like a blade.
Ye Xinren scoffed. His irritation spiked. "Enough. Don't call me again unless it's about business." His tone was firm, leaving no room for argument.
But the man ignored him. "Do you even know your husband?"
Ye Xinren's body stiffened. His grip on the phone tightened. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?" His voice rose slightly, his usual cold demeanor slipping. "Sure, I know him. We've been together for years. He chose me. He threw his ex-wife away for me. So don't start with your bullsht." His teeth clenched as he spat out the words.
The man chuckled again, his amusement clear. "Oh? Then tell me … do you know his family background?"
