Yuzu slams the alarm, jolting awake from her slumber. She stretches like a cat, a wide yawn escaping her lips before she finally drags herself out of bed. After quickly dressing, she makes her way to the kitchen.

Kitchen
While Yuzu prepares breakfast, she reflects on her heated argument with Takeru.
'I hope Takeru isn't still mad at me,' Yuzu thought, her hand trembling slightly as she lifted the cupplate to her lips. She acknowledged that she might have been overly harsh with Takeru's friends, yet they had relentlessly insulted her and mocked Takeru. What else was she supposed to do? Still, a pang of regret pricked at her, and she resolved to apologize to them the next time their paths crossed. Her mind then drifted to Luna's perplexing words from the night before. Yuzu pondered their meaning, a strange chill creeping over her. To Yuzu, it almost sounded like a final farewell. She shook her head, dismissing the unsettling thought. Luna had practically pleaded with Yuzu to stay, clinging to her side; she wouldn't simply vanish without a word. Yuzu finished cooking, carefully arranging the fragrant spread on the polished wooden table.
"Luna! Takeru! Breakfast!" Yuzu called out, her voice echoing in the quiet house. She waited, listening for the familiar sounds of footsteps, but a heavy silence hung in the air. After a prolonged moment, there was still no response.
"Luna! Takeru! Breakfast!" she called again, her voice tinged with a rising urgency, but still, only silence answered her.
Yuzu huffed, planting her hands on her hips, a knot of unease tightening in her stomach. "Geez, where are those two?" She called out one last time, her voice now a strained whisper, but again, received no reply. Growing increasingly nervous, Yuzu wasn't surprised that Takeru hadn't answered, given the intensity of their argument last night. However, Luna's silence was truly worrisome, a cold dread seeping into her bones. Yuzu began to ascend the stairs, her heart thudding against her ribs, heading toward the rooms where Luna and Takeru stayed. She first checked Takeru's room, her gaze sweeping across the empty space. Then she moved to Luna's room, only to find it equally deserted.
Yuzu's anxiety mounted, a suffocating wave washing over her. 'Maybe they just left,' Yuzu thought, desperately clinging to the fleeting hope, 'but they wouldn't have left without telling me, would they?' She couldn't shake the gnawing, ominous feeling in her chest. A chilling premonition gripped her, and she rushed downstairs, flinging open the front door and bursting out into the morning light.
Kolt village
"Luna! Takeru!" Yuzu yelled, her voice echoing through the bustling Kolt Village as she frantically searched for the missing mother and son. Rounding a corner, she collided with a solid form, tumbling to the ground with an "Owie!" Escaping her lips. Rubbing her sore bottom, she looked up to see Gerard, his tall frame silhouetted against the afternoon sun.
"Yuzu?" Gerard's voice held a note of surprise as he recognized the small figure on the ground.
"Uncle Gerard! I mean, Gerard-san," Yuzu quickly corrected herself, a blush creeping up her neck.
Gerard chuckled, extending a hand to help her up. "Where are you going in such a rush?"
"Gerard-san, have you seen Luna and Takeru?" Yuzu asked, her voice laced with a hint of desperation.
Gerard's brow furrowed in confusion. "No, aren't they at your house?"
"No, they left without telling me," Yuzu explained, her concern growing with each passing moment.
"Perhaps they had an errand to run," Gerard offered, trying to reassure her.
"If they did, they would have told me," Yuzu insisted, her gaze fixed on the distant forest.
"I'm sure they were in a hurry and didn't have time," Gerard said, a gentle smile gracing his lips. "Don't worry. I'm sure they'll be back."
"I don't know," Yuzu whispered, her eyes clouding with worry. "I have a terrible feeling."
Gerard's expression softened as he saw the genuine concern in her eyes. "Alright," he said, a determined glint in his own eyes. "I'll check the village, round up the villagers, and see if they saw them. You check the forest area and see if they went there."
"Thank you, Gerard-san!" Yuzu beamed, a spark of hope igniting within her.
"No problem," Gerard replied, watching as Yuzu sprinted towards the ominous forest, her heart pounding with a mixture of fear and determination.

Yuzu frantically searched the dense forest, her eyes darting between the gnarled trees and overgrown bushes, desperate for any sign of Luna and Takeru. A knot of dread tightened in her stomach with each empty scan. Just as panic began to set in, threatening to overwhelm her, she spotted something slumped against the base of an ancient oak. Hope, fragile but potent, surged through her as she hurried towards it.
"Takeru!" Yuzu exclaimed, relief flooding her voice as she rushed towards the small, still figure, his back to her. She skidded to a halt, hands on her hips, her chest heaving as she caught her breath. Then, adopting a familiar scolding stance, she pouted. "Geez, mister, you had me worried sick! What are you doing out here, and where is your mom?"
Takeru remained motionless, silent.
"Takeru? Hello, I'm talking to you." Her patience, already thin, began to fray.
Still no response. A prominent tick mark appeared on Yuzu's forehead. "Hey, I know you're still upset with me, but that doesn't mean you can ignore—" She reached out and lightly tapped his shoulder. The moment her fingers brushed him, Takeru toppled forward with a sickening thud, falling lifelessly to the ground.
"Takeru?!" Yuzu shrieked, her voice laced with shock and a burgeoning horror. She knelt beside him, her breath hitching as her eyes registered a series of chilling details. His skin was unnaturally cold beneath her touch, and there was no gentle rise and fall of his chest. Her trembling hands turned him over, revealing a gaping wound on his front, from which dark blood welled, staining the ground. A glint of metal caught her eye—a knife lay discarded beside him. With a sickening lurch, the horrifying truth crashed down upon her.
"No, no, no..." Yuzu whispered, tears blurring her vision.
Takeru was dead.
"TAKERU!!!" Yuzu wailed, her voice a raw, primal scream of grief. She clutched his small, cold body to her chest, the warmth of his blood seeping through her clothes. She continued to sob uncontrollably, the sound echoing through the silent forest, until the rustle of leaves announced the arrival of Gerard and the rest of the villagers, their faces etched with concern as they stumbled upon the devastating scene.
"Yuzu, we heard screaming. Are you okay?" Gerard's voice cut through the air, but his words dissolved into a gasp as his eyes landed on the gruesome scene. "Yuzu, what have you done?!" His shock echoed in the murmured gasps of the villagers.
Yuzu's gaze darted from Takeru's lifeless form to Gerard and the horrified faces of the villagers. She shook her head, a desperate denial. "No, this wasn't me!" she cried, tears already streaming down her face, a torrent of grief and terror.
"First, your parents, now Takeru, how many more lives are you going to take?!" Gerard's voice rose to a scream, fueled by a terrifying blend of fear and accusation.
"But I didn't—" Yuzu tried to plead, but her words were swallowed by the villagers' fearful and disgusted stares. Their eyes, once familiar, now held only condemnation.
"No excuses, young lady," Gerard sneered, his voice dripping with venom. "You left us no choice: seize her!" The villagers, a unified, angry mob, surged forward. Yuzu, a small, desperate figure, turned and bolted. Her little legs churned through the forest, a blur of motion as she fled. The villagers were hot on her heels, their shouts echoing through the trees, but she eventually burst from the dense woods into a wide, grassy expanse where a river snaked. Her eyes darted frantically, searching, until they landed on a small boat bobbing gently at the water's edge. Without a second thought, she scrambled in and pushed off, the current carrying her away from the nightmare.
She made landfall on a distant shore and began to run, not knowing where she was going, only that she had to put as much distance as possible between herself and the horror she'd left behind. Hours blurred into an endless marathon, her body protesting with every pounding step. Sweat plastered her hair to her forehead, and her lungs burned, each breath a searing pain. Finally, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, she stumbled into a town, her small frame giving out completely. She collapsed onto the hard ground, panting heavily, her vision blurring.
'Mommy, Daddy, Takeru, Luna...' The names echoed in her mind, a final, desperate plea before darkness swallowed her whole.
Yuzu slowly woke, her eyes fluttering open to survey the unfamiliar room.
"Where am I?" Yuzu questioned, her voice a fragile whisper.
"Oh, you're awake?" a warm voice responded. Startled, Yuzu turned her head to the left, her eyes widening as they settled on a tan, plump woman who stood there, her presence radiating a gentle calm.
"Who are you-" Yuzu began, but a sudden, wracking cough seized her, forcing her to double over.
"Take it easy, dear," the woman said, her voice laced with genuine concern. "Here, drink this." She extended a cup of water, its coolness a welcome sight.
"Thank you," Yuzu managed, her hand trembling slightly as she took the cup. She drank deeply, the water soothing her parched throat. After returning the cup to the woman, who placed it gently on a nearby dresser, Yuzu looked up, her gaze questioning.
"How do you feel, dear?" the woman asked, her eyes kind.
"Much better, thank you," Yuzu replied, her voice gaining a touch of strength. She glanced around the unfamiliar room, then back at the woman. "May I ask where I am and who you are?"
The woman's lips curved into a soft smile. "I'm Martha Takamoto, and you're in a room in my tavern, right here in Kido village. Two kind men found you collapsed near the entranceway and brought you here. I've been nursing you back to health."
"I see. Thank you for your help, but I must be going." Yuzu bowed her head in a gesture of gratitude and began to swing her legs out of bed, but Martha gently, yet firmly, pushed her back down.
"Hold your horses, Missy," Martha said, her tone laced with authority. "You're not going anywhere in your condition. You need to rest."
"I'm fine," Yuzu insisted, attempting once more to rise, but Martha's grip tightened, holding her in place with surprising strength.
"I told you, you're not leaving until you're truly feeling better."
"I appreciate your concern, ma'am, but I can't stay here! I need to go!" Yuzu protested, desperately trying to break free from Martha's hold. However, Martha was unyielding, her strength a quiet force. With a frustrated sigh, Yuzu finally gave up.
"Okay, fine, you win," Yuzu pouted, a hint of childish defiance in her voice.
"That's better," Martha said, a knowing twinkle in her eye. "Now, would you mind explaining what's going on?"
Yuzu, after a moment of hesitation, began to recount her ordeal to Martha.
"I see," Martha said, her expression softening with sympathy. "I'm sorry that happened to you, dear."
"It's okay, but I really must be going." Yuzu, with renewed determination, once again climbed out of bed and started towards the door, but Martha, with swift precision, blocked her path.
"Hold on, dear, I understand your situation, but I can't let you go just yet," Martha said, her voice firm yet gentle.
"But if I don't leave, the men of my village are going to come here, and I'm afraid of what they might do to you and the rest of the village," Yuzu pleaded, her voice laced with fear.
"Don't worry, hon," Martha reassured, placing a comforting hand on Yuzu's arm. She then flexed, her bicep bulging impressively. "We are a lot tougher than we look. If your villagers come around here, we'll give them what for."
"I still don't know..." Yuzu trailed off, her gaze downcast. Martha observed Yuzu's forlorn expression and let out a sigh.
"Look, dear. I understand your plight, but running off half-cocked isn't going to solve anything. You should at least figure out a plan."
"But I'm not sure what I should do," Yuzu replied, her voice barely a whisper. Martha's lips curved into a warm smile.
"Tell you what, dear, why don't you work at my tavern?"
"Huh?" Yuzu exclaimed, her eyes wide with surprise.
Martha elaborated, "You stay in my tavern, and we'll provide you with food, shelter, and protection. In exchange, you work as a maid while you try to figure out a plan and recuperate. What do you say?"
Yuzu looked surprised. "But why would you do that for me?"
Martha looked at Yuzu softly, her smile unwavering. "Because I couldn't in good conscience leave a child alone." At that moment, Yuzu remembered Luna and how she had spoken those exact words.
Yuzu looked up at Martha, a genuine smile gracing her lips. "Okay, I accept."
"Then it's settled. Let's get you settled in," Martha said, and with a shared understanding, she and Yuzu walked out the door.

Tavern
1 week later
The bustling tavern, now teeming with patrons, echoed with the clatter of tankards and the murmur of conversation as Yuzu expertly navigated between tables, clearing empty vessels and wiping down sticky surfaces. Time seemed to blur in the rhythmic dance of her duties, until a welcome lull announced the start of her much-anticipated break.
''Finally over…'' Yuzu said, wiping her brow, a bead of sweat tracing a path down her temple. Martha, her smile as warm as the hearth fire, approached Yuzu.
''Great job, dear,'' Martha said, her voice a comforting murmur. ''You're getting better and better with each passing day.''
''Thank you, Martha-san,'' Yuzu replied, bowing her head in a gesture of respect, her blond hair swaying slightly.
''Go on, take your break. I'll call you back when I need you.''
''Yes, ma'am!'' Yuzu exclaimed, her voice light with relief as she headed towards the quiet sanctuary of the room behind the counter. Martha, meanwhile, began polishing a glass, its surface gleaming under her ministrations. Just then, the heavy tavern door burst open with a resounding thud, revealing a group of rough-looking men who strode purposefully toward the counter.
''Hello, gentlemen,'' Martha greeted, her professional demeanor unwavering. ''What can I get you fellas?''
One of the men, a broad-shouldered individual with a stern gaze, spoke. ''We're here on business, ma'am. My name is Gerard Yamanaka, and I'm looking for someone.''
''Oh? And who might that be?'' Martha inquired, her eyes subtly assessing the newcomers.
Gerard produced a crumpled picture from his coat pocket, holding it out for Martha to see. It was a familiar face—the innocent features of a little girl. ''Have you seen this girl?''
Martha's gaze swept over the photograph, and a flicker of recognition, quickly suppressed, crossed her features. It was undeniably Yuzu.
'This must be the man Yuzu mentioned,' Martha thought, her mind racing. ''Nope, haven't seen her around these parts.''
''Ma'am, please don't lie to me,'' Gerard's voice hardened, a dangerous edge to his tone.
Martha narrowed her eyes, her resolve solidifying. ''I'm not lying to you, dear; this girl you're looking for hasn't come around these parts.''
''That's funny,'' Gerard said, a sneer twisting his lips, ''because we have eyewitness reports saying she was last seen here.''
''I don't know what you're talking about,'' Martha insisted, her hand still calmly polishing the glass. With a sudden, swift movement, Gerard snatched the glass from her hand and, with a harsh crack, smashed it on the ground. The sudden noise echoed through the tavern, drawing the startled attention of every patron.
''Now, ma'am, I don't want to cause trouble in your establishment,'' Gerard said, his voice deceptively calm as his men spread out, forming a menacing semicircle around the counter. ''But we need to find this girl, and she was last seen here, so I'm going to ask again…'' Gerard leaned across the counter, his face uncomfortably close to Martha's. ''Have you seen this girl?''
Martha glared back at Gerard, her expression unyielding, while discreetly pressing a hidden button beneath the counter with her thumb. ''And I'm going to tell you again, I haven't seen her.''
Gerard and Martha locked eyes in a tense stare-down, the air thick with unspoken threats. Just then, a faint noise could be heard from behind the counter, a soft thud or rustle. Gerard's head snapped up, his gaze fixing on the unassuming door leading to the back room.
''I'll take you at your word, ma'am, but just to be sure, you wouldn't mind us checking this place? Say behind that room?''
''That room is for authorized personnel only,'' Martha stated, her voice sharp with defiance. ''You're not allowed in.''
Gerard said nothing, simply moving to step behind the counter and head towards the room. Martha, quick as a flash, blocked his path.
''I said this room is for authorized personnel only,'' Martha growled, a warning rumble in her throat.
''I just want to check…'' Gerard said, his patience visibly fraying with each passing second.
''I said no!''
''MOVE, YOU BLOATED BITCH!'' Gerard roared, his face contorted in a mask of fury. At that precise moment, the back room door swung open, revealing Hendrick, his imposing figure filling the doorway, flanked by his men, all armed with an array of menacing weapons.
''What seems to be the problem here?'' Hendrick's voice was a low, dangerous rumble that commanded attention.
''We are looking for a little girl, and we have reason to believe she is here in this tavern,'' Gerard explained, his voice regaining some semblance of composure. ''We are trying to check this place, but this fat cow won't let us.''
Hendrick's eyes narrowed, a cold fury replacing his earlier calm. ''This 'fat cow' happens to be my wife, and there is no little girl in this tavern. Now I suggest you leave this town, or we will make you!'' Hendrick and his men shifted into battle stances, their weapons glinting ominously in the tavern's dim light.
A suffocating tension filled the tavern air as Gerard and his men meticulously sized up Hendrick and his formidable group. Not a single person moved or uttered a sound. Finally, Gerard broke the silence.
''Fine,'' Gerard said, his voice grudging. ''We don't want any trouble. We'll leave.'' Gerard signaled his men, who, with a collective sigh of relief, backed down and began to exit the tavern.
Hendrick ordered one of his men to ensure Gerard and his men had indeed left the town. After a few tense minutes, the man returned, offering a reassuring nod that they were gone. Hendrick returned the nod, then turned to his wife, a relieved yet weary expression on his face.
"Are you alright, Martha?" Hendrick's voice was laced with concern as he turned to his wife.
"I'm fine, thank you, Hendrick," Martha replied, her gaze softening as she met his eyes. She then shifted her attention to the closed door. "Alright, dear, you can come out now."
A small, nervous peek of a face emerged from the doorway – it was Yuzu. Her eyes darted to Martha, seeking reassurance. Martha offered a gentle nod, and with that silent encouragement, Yuzu stepped fully into the room.
"Thank you, Martha-san, Hendrick-san," Yuzu said, her voice soft with gratitude as she executed a low bow.
"You're welcome, dear," Martha replied, a warm smile gracing her lips. Hendrick simply offered a confirming nod.
"I'm truly sorry for all the trouble I've caused," Yuzu continued, her gaze dropping to the floor. "I'll try to be out of your hair as soon as possible."
"It's quite alright, dear," Martha assured her, her voice gentle and comforting. "You take as much time as you need. And whenever you decide to leave, please know you'll always have a place with us."
"Thank you, Martha-san," Yuzu whispered, her eyes welling up with tears of gratitude.
"You're very welcome, dear. Now, come on, break time's over. Time to get back to work."
"Yes, ma'am!" Yuzu exclaimed, a radiant smile lighting up her face as she hurried off to bus more tables.

Two months later...
Yuzu strolls through the bustling town square, the chatter of villagers a familiar symphony around her. She offers polite nods and smiles; her mind, however, drifts. Takeru's lifeless eyes haunt her, and Luna's sudden vanishing weighs heavily on her heart. She must find Luna, but a gnawing dread tells her it won't be easy. Gerard and his zealous villagers are relentless; two months ago, they proved they would pursue her to the furthest reaches of Seren.
Yuzu realizes she needs a shield, a protector who can escort her without prying into her affairs. But where could she find such an innocent soul? As she ponders, her gaze snags on a flash of golden hair. A boy, barely more than a silhouette, is engrossed in conversation with a magnificent golden dog-beastkalin.
"Takeru?!" A hopeful whisper escapes her lips as she rubs her eyes, disbelief warring with a flicker of recognition. No, it's not him. As she scrutinizes the boy, a blush ignites her cheeks. He's clad in nothing but his boxers, his lean form bathed in the afternoon sun.
"Wha—" Yuzu's shriek slices through the air, drawing the boy and the dog's attention.
"W-what do you think you're doing?!" she demands, rushing towards the bewildered pair.

A week later
Yuzu gazes intently through the narrow crack in the door, her eyes fixed on the boy and the dog as they converse in hushed tones. Eventually, their voices fade, and they both drift off to sleep. Yuzu gently eases the door shut, then turns and flees from the room, a whirlwind of thoughts in her mind.
Later that night, the warm glow of the tavern illuminates Yuzu and Martha as they talk.
"Are you certain, dear?" Martha asks, her voice tinged with surprise.
"Yes," Yuzu affirms, nodding. "He saved the village, and even after he was punished, he was still willing to help. I truly believe he's the perfect person to assist me."
"No offense, dear," Martha replies, leaning in conspiratorially, "but between you and me, he's not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed."
"True," Yuzu concedes, "but he's strong, and he won't ask questions. That's more than enough for me."
"If you say so," Martha replies, a hint of skepticism in her tone. "Are you sure he'll even take you with him?"
"I don't know," Yuzu admits, her gaze distant. "But I have to try my luck. This might be the only chance I'll ever get."
Yuzu embraces Martha, a surprising gesture that makes Martha's eyes widen.
"I want to thank you for everything you've done for me," Yuzu whispers, her voice thick with emotion. "No matter where this journey takes me, I hope I can always call this place home."
"Of course, hon, you'll always have a place here," Martha reassures her, her voice softening.
"Thank you, Martha-san," Yuzu sobs, tears streaming down her face.
"You're welcome, dear," Martha replies, her own eyes welling up. They hold each other for a long moment, the quiet comfort of their embrace filling the space.
The next morning, Yuzu stands at the village entrance with the boy and his dog. The crisp morning air carries the scent of pine and damp earth.
"Are you sure you want to come with us?" the boy asks, his voice hesitant.
"Yes," Yuzu replies, her voice firm.
The boy sighs, a mix of resignation and acceptance in his eyes. "Okay, just promise me you'll be alright."
"I will," Yuzu says, her gaze unwavering.
The boy and his dog begin their journey, their figures growing smaller with each step. Yuzu watches the boy, and an image of Takeru flickers in her mind, his face a poignant memory.
'Takeru...' Yuzu thinks, her eyes suddenly brimming with unshed tears. She shakes her head, a fierce determination hardening her features.
"Takeru, I'll find whoever did that to you and make them pay!"
With that resolute thought, Yuzu turns and follows the boy and his dog, stepping into the unknown, her heart ablaze with purpose.

Present time
Gerard concluded his harrowing tale, leaving an oppressive silence in his wake. Yuzu's raw, guttural sobs were the only sound to pierce the heavy air, a mournful counterpoint to Gerard's cruel, triumphant smirk.
"Now do you see why Yuzu has to die?" Gerard's voice, a low rumble, broke the stillness as he addressed Linn. Linn stood unmoving, his face a mask of shock and contemplation as the full weight of Gerard's words settled upon him. After a long, agonizing pause, a fierce, burning glare ignited in Linn's eyes, fixed squarely on Gerard.
"No, I don't see why Yuzu has to die! Yuzu is the sweetest, kindest, and most caring person I have ever met. She would never kill anyone!"
"Linn…" Yuzu said, her voice a tearful whisper.
"Sure, she might be stubborn and overbearing, gets mad easily, is always in everyone's business, and the ear-pulling really hurts and—" Everyone sweat-dropped as Linn continued to list Yuzu's traits.
"Get to the point, kid," Gerard deadpanned, his patience wearing thin.
"My point is that Yuzu would never harm anyone; she is not a witch of death but rather an angel of life," Linn declared, his conviction unwavering.
Yuzu looked on with a stunned expression, a familiar echo of Luna's words reverberating in her mind.
"Master, are you sure it's not love?" Tomo ventured, a bead of sweat tracing a path down his temple.
"N-no, it's not. I just said the first thing that came to my mind!" Linn stammered, a deep blush creeping up his neck. Gerard merely scoffed, a sneer twisting his lips.
"Oh, please. She is not an angel; she is just an evil plague that has swept across this village and needs to be put down."
"That's not what my good/evil reader indicates," Linn retorted, pointing at Yuzu, ''You see, Yuzu is radiating with positive energy'' Then, his finger swiveled to Gerard, "while you are radiating so much evil energy that it's making me sick. If anyone is a plague, it's you! How could you do this to Yuzu?! You're supposed to be her family!"
"That doesn't matter," Gerard growled, his gaze hardening. "I'm doing what's best for the village, and Yuzu dying is best for everyone."
"What's best for everyone? You mean what's best for you." Linn's voice was laced with accusation.
"What?" Gerard replied, a flicker of confusion in his eyes.
"From what I see," Linn began, his voice gaining momentum, "You have some deep-seated grudge against Yuzu, and you're using that as a flimsy excuse to get rid of her. I don't know what this grudge is, but the fact that you are willing to set an innocent little girl on fire—a girl you are supposed to take care of—is both sad and pathetic. Not to mention, you manipulated the villagers into hating Yuzu just for your twisted revenge. If all that is true, you are nothing but a selfish, pathetic excuse of a man."
"SHUT UP!!" Gerard roared, his face contorted with fury. "You have no idea what it is like to be me. You have no idea what it is like to work your entire life and get nothing in return! I was supposed to be famous and rich with a beautiful wife, but no, I ended up stuck here with an incompetent elder and a bunch of moronic villagers who believe and do whatever they're told!" Gerard's gaze, filled with venom, locked onto Yuzu. "Then, when I finally found love, it was taken from me not once but twice because of her!!" Gerard's hand shot out, seizing Yuzu by the hair and yanking hard. Yuzu yelped in pain, tears streaming down her face. "And now she is going to pay!"
"I won't let you!" Linn shouted, rushing toward Gerard. Regulus blocked his path, delivering a powerful side-kick to Linn's stomach that sent him sprawling. Linn sat up, glaring at the beastkalin mercenary.
"Get out of my way, Regulus!" Linn screamed, his voice raw.
"I already told you I can't do that, child," Regulus replied, his tone even and unyielding.
"Are you kidding me?! After hearing all that, you'll still help this man?!" Linn's voice was incredulous.
"My employer's personal affairs are not my concerns. I was hired to stop you, and that's what I will do."
Linn began to sweat as Regulus loomed over him, sword held aloft. Linn braced for the inevitable impact as Regulus brought his sword swinging down, but the attack suddenly stopped, suspended in mid-air.
"What?" Regulus said, confusion clouding his features. Linn looked up to find Daisuke standing before him, his hand effortlessly gripping Regulus's sword.
"Daisuke!" Linn exclaimed, surprised. Daisuke offered a reassuring smile.
"Hey kid, can you stand?" Daisuke asked, his voice calm.
"What are you doing here?" Linn said, pushing himself to his feet.
"Hey, now, don't worry about me. You have more pressing matters." Daisuke nodded his head toward Gerard and Yuzu. Linn understood, nodding back before sprinting off.
"Oh no, you don't!" Regulus snarled, wrenching his blade free from Daisuke's grasp and turning his attention to Linn. Swinging his blade in a lethal arc, Linn tried to counter, but Daisuke suddenly appeared in front of Linn, taking the full force of the attack.
"Daisuke!" Linn cried out, fear lacing his voice.
"I'm fine, kid!" Daisuke grunted, a flicker of pain crossing his face, then pulled Regulus into a crushing bear hug. "I'll hold him off; you go get Yuzu!"
"But..." Linn began, hesitation in his voice. Daisuke turned to Linn, a warm smile on his face.
"It's okay, Kid. I'm your bodyguard. Now go. The princess is waiting for her hero to rescue her."
"Thanks, Daisuke," Linn said, a surge of renewed determination propelling him forward as he ran off. Regulus looked up at Daisuke, a surprised expression on his face.
"I say, aren't you-?" Regulus started, his voice trailing off.
"I'm just a guy doing his job," Daisuke smirked, his eyes following Linn as he raced toward Gerard and Yuzu. As Linn closed the distance, Gerard began to panic visibly.
"S-stay back!" Gerard stammered, but Linn ignored him, charging forward. Just then, the villagers positioned themselves, forming a living wall between Linn and Gerard.
"Heh," Gerard smirked, a flicker of triumph in his eyes.
Linn and the villagers locked gazes. Then, in a unified movement, the villagers parted, creating a clear path directly to Gerard. His eyes widened in disbelief.
"What are you doing?!" Gerard shrieked. One of the villagers met his gaze with a fierce glare.
"Making decisions for ourselves!" the villager declared. Gerard stood dumbfounded, his jaw slack.
Linn offered a brief nod of thanks to the villagers and lunged toward Gerard. Gerard watched, sweat beading on his forehead, his gaze darting frantically between Linn and the bound figure of Yuzu. Finally, Linn reached them, but before he could act, Gerard produced a match, igniting it with a scratch and holding the tiny flame precariously over Yuzu's head.
"Stop!" Gerard cried, his voice laced with a desperate plea. "Don't make a move, or I'll drop this on Yuzu." Linn froze, his glare burning into Gerard. A manic laugh bubbled from Gerard's throat.
"Now I'm just going to," Gerard began, his words cut short as two villagers seized him from behind.
"What?!" Gerard shrieked, the match slipping from his grasp. One villager quickly extinguished the flame while the other expertly pulled Gerard's arms behind his back.
"He's all yours, kid," the villager said, offering Linn a reassuring thumbs-up. Linn nodded, cracking his knuckles with an audible pop as he advanced menacingly toward Gerard.
"Wait, this is a misunderstanding!" Gerard pleaded, his voice cracking. "I wasn't really going to kill her! I just wanted to scare her a little bit."
Linn remained silent, his fist already coiling back, preparing for impact.
"No, seriously, it was just a prank! Please don't hurt—"
POW!
Linn's fist connected with Gerard's jaw with a sickening thud, sending him skidding across the hard ground before he crumpled into a heap. Linn dusted his hands casually and strode toward Yuzu.
"Linn…" Yuzu whispered, a weak smile gracing her lips. Linn returned her smile.
"Hey, sorry it took so long, but I'm here." Linn quickly untied the ropes binding Yuzu. She stumbled off the cross and directly into Linn's waiting arms.
"Whoa, you okay?" Linn asked, steadying her. Yuzu nodded, tears welling in her eyes.
"I'm fine," Yuzu murmured, hugging Linn tightly. "I'm sorry, and thank you."
"You're welcome," Linn replied, hoisting Yuzu into his arms in a bridal carry. A blush crept across Yuzu's cheeks as he swiftly jogged over to rejoin the rest of the gang.
'"Good job, Master," Tomo praised, his voice echoing in the clearing.
"Thanks, Tomo," Linn replied, a faint smile gracing his lips.
"So what do we do about him?" Daisuke inquired, his grip firm on Regulus, who struggled briefly before surrendering to the inevitable.
"I concede. You win," Regulus sighed, a hint of resignation in his tone. "Just unhand me, and I'll be on my way."
Linn carefully placed Yuzu on the soft grass, while Tomo positioned himself protectively beside him. The group collectively fixated their gaze on the majestic bird beastkalin.
"Why should we trust you?" Linn challenged, his eyes narrowing with suspicion.
"I have failed my mission," Regulus explained, his voice calm and steady. "Given how you apprehended my employer and successfully rescued the girl, I have no reason to continue this futile battle." Despite his logical explanation, the group continued to regard Regulus with palpable skepticism.
"What should we do, master?" Tomo sought guidance, his gaze fixed on Linn.
Linn paused, deep in thought, for what felt like an eternity.
"Let him go," Linn finally commanded, his voice firm and unwavering. The gang exchanged surprised glances, clearly taken aback by his decision.
"Are you sure?" Daisuke asked, his brows furrowed in concern.
"Yes," Linn affirmed, a knowing glint in his eyes. "Seeing him like this reminds me of a caged bird." A mischievous smirk then played on Linn's lips. "A caged bird should be sent 'flying.'"
Daisuke, recognizing the subtle shift in Linn's tone, returned the smirk. With a powerful surge of strength, he lifted Regulus high above his head and launched him across the sprawling village with a mighty heave.
"RUN!" Linn bellowed, and the gang immediately broke into a sprint, their footsteps pounding as they exited the village. Regulus landed gracefully and watched their retreating forms. He then approached the unconscious Gerard, retrieved a small vial of smelling salts, and administered them, rousing Gerard from his slumber.
"Ow…" Gerard grunted, slowly pushing himself up. His eyes, still bleary from the impact, focused on the figure before him: Regulus.
"Regulus? What happened?"
"The boy and his companions have taken the girl and fled," Regulus explained, his voice devoid of emotion. Gerard's face twisted into an expression of raw fury.
"Then go after them!" Gerard roared, his voice laced with unbridled rage.
"No," Regulus calmly stated, his posture unyielding. "I completed my mission."
"What are you talking about? You let them get away with Yuzu!" Gerard seethed, his anger simmering.
"That is correct," Regulus replied, his gaze unwavering.
"Then what are you—"
"My job was to 'get rid of the boy and his compatriots.' You didn't say anything about protecting the girl," Regulus stated, his words cutting through Gerard's fury. Gerard's jaw dropped, his face a mask of utter flabbergast. "Now, I believe you owe 400 gold."
"400 gold?!" Gerard exclaimed, his voice incredulous.
"Yes, 200 for bringing Yuzu Katagiri to Kolt Village and 200 for getting rid of the boy and his companions."
"I'm not giving you a single coin!" Gerard shouted, his voice shaking with defiance. Regulus's eyes narrowed, two obsidian slits of displeasure.
"So you refuse to pay what I am owed?" Regulus's voice was a low, dangerous growl.
"That's right! You failed your job, so I don't owe you anything! Yuzu got away, and it's your fault!" Gerard spat, his anger boiling over, before grunting, "But I guess it's my fault too for using a dirty beastkalin."
Regulus's eyes narrowed even further, a flicker of something dark igniting within their depths. "Care to repeat that?"
Gerard, oblivious to the simmering threat, stepped forward, poking Regulus repeatedly in the chest. "A-dir-ty beast-ka-lin-"
Slash!
Gerard froze, a chilling stillness consuming him. His gaze dropped to the hand he had just used to poke Regulus, and he registered, with a sickening lurch, that it was gone. Blood welled up, pouring from the raw stump. Time seemed to stretch agonizingly slow as Gerard stared at his now missing limb before the shock finally overwhelmed him, and he crumpled to the ground, unconscious. Regulus glared down at Gerard's prone form, his sword glinting menacingly as he raised it, preparing to deliver the final, fatal blow.
"Stop!"
Regulus turned sharply, his gaze locking on the source of the voice: a short, bald, elderly man with a large, wispy gray beard, his eyes holding a surprising depth of wisdom.
"I say, you are this village's elder, correct?" Regulus's voice held a hint of suspicion.
The Elder nodded, his expression solemn. "Yes, that's right."
"I see. How may I help you?" Regulus asked, his hand still hovering near his sword hilt.
"I implore you to spare Gerard; if you do that, I will pay you what you are owed."
Regulus's gaze flickered between the prostrate Gerard and the imploring Elder, a silent calculation passing through his mind. "Very well," Regulus finally conceded, sheathing his sword with a soft click.
"Thank you," the Elder said, a wave of relief washing over his face. He produced a worn, brown leather bag, its weight evident from the jingle of coins within, and handed it to Regulus. Regulus took the bag, a faint clink echoing, and began to walk away.
"Hold on before you go," the Elder called out, a hint of something mischievous in his tone. "I have one last job for you."
Regulus spun around, his eyes narrowing once more, his hand instinctively resting on his sword hilt. "Surely, you jest if you think I will do business with this village again." The Elder simply stared, his expression unperturbed, a faint smirk playing on his lips.
"Don't worry—this is the last thing, and then you can go, and you'll never hear from us again," the Elder said, his smirk widening. "Besides, I have already paid for the job in advance, and you wouldn't do a job you were already paid for, would you?"
Regulus blinked, a flicker of surprise in his eyes, and checked the bag. His fingers brushed against a surprising abundance of coins; the Elder had indeed doubled the amount.
'This crafty old man…' Regulus thought, a grudging respect stirring within him.
"Very well…" Regulus sighed, a hint of resignation in his voice. "What do you need of me?"
The Elder, his eyes twinkling, proceeded to explain the intricate job details to Regulus, his voice low and conspiratorial, and then handed him another, smaller brown bag. Regulus raised an eyebrow in a silent acknowledgment, nodded curtly, and then, with a powerful leap, launched himself into the air, vanishing into the sky. The Elder then turned his attention to the scattered villagers, their faces etched with a mixture of fear and confusion.
"OK, everyone, get back to your homes," the Elder ordered, his voice firm and commanding. The villagers exchanged bewildered glances. One of them, a young man with a hesitant expression, stepped forward.
"What about Gerard, sir?"
"I must prepare for his banishment. Will you help me?"
"Yes, sir!" the villager exclaimed, a newfound determination in his voice. The villagers, their confusion replaced by a sense of purpose, dispersed, leaving the Elder alone with his somber thoughts. The Elder looked up at the village entrance, his gaze distant.
'I did what you asked, Luna, but was that the right choice?' He turned his gaze toward the entrance, a profound sadness clouding his features. 'Yuzu, I'm sorry; I should have believed you and been a better guardian. I was a fool, and I'm truly sorry." He then looked down at Gerard's unconscious form, his expression hardening into one of pure disgust.
"That boy was right; you are a poor, pathetic excuse of a man, Gerard," the Elder muttered, before turning and walking away, leaving Gerard to his grim fate.

The gang fled the village with a desperate urgency, their legs pumping like pistons. Once a safe distance away, with no signs of pursuit, they collapsed, gasping for breath.
"Tomo, do you sense anyone following us?" Linn's voice was a ragged whisper.
"I don't perceive any presence..." Tomo's reply was barely audible.
A collective sigh of relief escaped Linn and the others. Just then, Tomo's ears twitched, perking up with sudden alertness.
'"Wait, somebody's coming!" Tomo exclaimed, his ears twitching.
The gang immediately tensed, their gazes sweeping the surroundings. "Don't tell me it's—" Linn began, but his words were cut short as a massive form crashed down before them, sending a violent gust of wind and a thick cloud of dust billowing into the air. As the dust slowly settled, a familiar figure emerged.
"Regulus!" Linn shouted, his voice laced with surprise and a hint of dread, as the entire group instinctively fell into defensive battle stances.
"Relax, I did not come to battle," the imposing bird beastkalin assured them, his deep voice calm and resonant. "I merely came to deliver a message and some items to the young miss." He held up a sturdy brown bag.
"And what makes you think—" Linn started, but Yuzu gently placed a hand on his arm, silencing him.
"It's okay, Linn," Yuzu said, her expression serene as she gestured for Regulus to continue.
Regulus pulled out a crisp piece of paper, clearing his throat with a deliberate sound. "On behalf of the esteemed village of Kolt Village and by the power invested in me as the elder, I hereby banish Yuzu Katagiri from Kolt Village. We will pursue you no longer and wish you luck on your new path." The boys exchanged shocked glances, their faces mirroring disbelief, while Yuzu's gaze fell, a visible sadness clouding her features.
"What the heck was that?!" Linn yelled, his voice echoing with indignation.
Regulus simply shrugged his massive shoulders. "I merely said what's on the paper."
"But that's not fair!" Linn protested vehemently.
"It's okay, Linn," Yuzu reassured him with a soft smile. She then turned her attention back to Regulus. "You said you had items for me as well?"
"Yes," Regulus replied, once again holding up the brown bag.
"But—" Linn began again, though Yuzu's gentle smile seemed to quiet his protest. She walked calmly towards Regulus, who handed her the bag. Yuzu accepted it, bowing her head in a gesture of gratitude before rejoining the group.
"Is that all?" Linn asked, still slightly bewildered.
"Yes, that is all," Regulus confirmed. "I have concluded my business with Kolt Village and will no longer pursue you or the young miss." He turned, preparing to take flight, but paused, side-eying Tomodachi.
"I say you are Tomodachi, correct?"
Tomodachi raised an eyebrow, a hint of surprise in his expression. "Yes, that's right."
"While I admire your dedication and loyalty to the boy, I must say that I don't condone the act of a beastkalin serving a human. Humans are nothing but selfish and arrogant creatures who only think of themselves. While you seem to have a good relationship with the boy, he will turn on you, as all humans do," Regulus stated, his gaze piercing.
"I fail to see how my relationship with my master is any of your business," Tomo snarled, his eyes narrowing to slits.
"I merely wish to advise you as a fellow beastkalin. Please, do as you wish, but at least heed my advice and not let the boy take advantage of your nature."
"How dare you! I would never oof—" Linn began, but Tomo quickly clapped a hand over Linn's mouth, cutting him off.
"I'll think about it," Tomo said, his voice flat.
"That's all I ask, farewell..." Regulus said, then soared into the sky, disappearing quickly into the distance. The gang watched the mercenary until he was a mere speck, then collectively sighed in relief.
"Oh man, I hope we don't have to deal with him again," Linn muttered, before turning to Yuzu. "What's in the bag?"
Yuzu carefully opened the bag, pulling out a vibrant green plant, a faded picture of her parents, a shimmering blue pendant, and a folded letter. She reached for the letter first, her eyes scanning its contents in silence. As she finished reading, a gentle sob escaped her, and tears welled in her eyes.
"Woah, hey, you okay?" Linn asked, his voice filled with genuine worry. Yuzu wiped her eyes, a faint smile gracing her lips.
"Yes, I'm fine," Yuzu replied softly.
"What did the letter say?" Tomo pressed, curious.
"I'll tell you guys later. For now, let's head back to the cabin and get some rest. It's been a long day for all of us," Yuzu said, her voice a little weary. The gang nodded in agreement and began their journey back to the cabin, the day's eventful encounters weighing on them.

Cabin house
The gang stepped inside the cozy cabin, instantly spotting Cheerilee. Cheerilee, her smile warm, greeted them before enveloping Yuzu in a heartfelt hug.
"Yuzu-chan! I'm so incredibly relieved you're safe. I was so worried about you!" Cheerilee exclaimed, her voice thick with concern.
"I'm sorry, Cheerilee-san," Yuzu murmured, returning the embrace. As Cheerilee pulled back, she gazed into Yuzu's eyes and noticed the tell-tale redness around them.
"Oh dear, your eyes are red. Are you sure you're feeling alright?" Cheerilee asked, her brow furrowed with worry.
"I'm perfectly fine," Yuzu replied, attempting a reassuring smile. "Is it alright if we stay the night here?"
"I don't mind at all, but I only have one bedroom," Cheerilee said, a hint of apology in her tone.
Before Yuzu could respond, Daisuke shamelessly pushed her aside and snatched Cheerilee's hands. "In that case, I'd be more than happy to bunk with you, my dear," Daisuke purred, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively. A collective sweatdrop appeared on everyone's forehead.
"I'll share a room with Cheerilee-san while the boys sleep in the living room. Does that arrangement work for everyone?" Yuzu interjected, her voice firm.
"Yes, that sounds like a perfectly good arrangement," Cheerilee readily agreed.
"I'm fine with that," Linn said, a small smile playing on his lips. Tomo merely nodded in agreement, his expression unreadable. Daisuke, however, let out a comically exaggerated wail of dejection.
"Great, I suggest everyone gets some much-needed rest, and we'll decide what to do tomorrow," Yuzu announced, her tone decisive.
"Okay," Linn replied, while Daisuke, still holding Cheerilee's hand, continued his relentless flirting.
"Oh, my sweet Cheerilee-san, wouldn't you rather bunk with me?" Daisuke crooned, wiggling his eyebrows with renewed vigor. Cheerilee sweatdropped again as Yuzu, with surprising swiftness, grabbed Daisuke by the ear and yanked him away from the stunned Cheerilee.
"Daisuke-san, I need to talk to you for a minute. Come with me, now," Yuzu said, her voice laced with an undeniable command.
"Ow! Ow! Yuzu, what the hell?!" Daisuke groaned dramatically as Yuzu unceremoniously dragged him towards the kitchen, leaving the others in a state of amused confusion.
"I'll head upstairs then," Cheerilee said, a faint blush on her cheeks. "Call me if you need me."
Cheerilee disappeared upstairs, leaving Linn and Tomodachi alone in the living room. Linn turned to Tomo, who was deep in thought, his gaze fixed on the empty doorway.
"What's wrong, boy?" Linn asked, his voice soft with concern. Tomo, a worried frown etched on his transformed human features, turned to face him.
"I was reflecting on Regulus's words about the Beastkalin race and how humans can't be trusted." Tomo's gaze drifted, his eyes distant as if seeing something far away.
"Tomo, you shouldn't listen to what Regulus says—" Linn began, his tone gentle but firm.
"I know I shouldn't, but I can sense Regulus's sadness and hostility towards humans," Tomo interrupted, his voice thick with a newfound complexity of emotion. "This got me thinking about the Beastkalin race and whether they are being persecuted here, leading me to reflect on my situation. Back in our world, I was just a normal dog, always begging for love and food. But here, I'm human, and I've been experiencing thoughts and complex feelings that I never knew I had. Am I a dog or a human?"
Tomo clutched his head, his hands fisted in his hair, and shook it vigorously. "I don't know anymore!" The words tore from him, a raw cry of confusion.
Linn watched Tomo, his eyes filled with a mixture of concern and understanding, as the dog man began to weep, soft, gentle sobs escaping him. Linn reached out, his hands finding Tomo's, clasping them firmly. He held Tomo's gaze, looking him straight in the eyes.
"Tomo, who am I to you?" Linn asked, his voice steady, a grounding force in Tomo's turmoil. Tomo looked at Linn, his expression puzzled, his tears momentarily forgotten.
"Huh?"
"I said, who am I to you?" Linn repeated, his grip on Tomo's hands firm.
"You're my master," Tomo answered, the words coming naturally, instinctively.
"And how long have we known each other?" Linn asked, his gaze unwavering.
"Two years?" Tomo replied, his brow furrowed in thought.
"And in the two years we spent together, what did that mean to you, and how did that make you feel?" Linn's voice was a soft insistence, probing for the truth.
"Master, I don't understand—" Tomo began, his confusion evident.
"Answer the question, boy," Linn ordered, his voice taking on a quiet authority.
"Oh yes, um..." Tomo began, his words slow at first, then gaining momentum as the memories flooded back. "When I was alone in that box on that cold night, I was scared and hungry; I was basically at death's door. Then you, Kaila, and Erica found me. You picked me up from that dreaded box and decided to take care of me. You gave me food, shelter, and showered me with love and affection. I felt happy and eternally grateful to you."
Linn closed his eyes for a moment, a wave of emotion passing over his face, then opened them, a sad smile touching his lips. "Now, with all that said, do you think I would ever betray you?" Linn asked, his voice low, almost a whisper. Tomo looked shocked, his eyes widening.
"No, of course not! That wasn't what I was insisting on at all! What I meant was that I don't know enough humans to give a reasonable answer. I don't understand why you took me in, but that doesn't matter. I trust you completely; I owe my life to you, and I love you." Tomo's voice was earnest, his sincerity undeniable.
Linn let go of Tomo's hands, his touch lingering as he gently patted Tomo's head, a gesture of profound affection. "Thank you, boy. I took you in because I wanted to save you and take care of you—no other reason. It turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me. You've been my best friend and confidant for so long, and that's why I named you Tomodachi, which means 'friend.' So don't think for a second that I would treat you badly. You are Tomodachi, my loyal dog, and best friend; you mean the world to me, and I love you too."
Tomo looked at Linn, his vision blurring as large, glistening tears welled up in his own eyes. A choked sob escaped him, and he embraced Linn fiercely.
"MASTER!!!" Tomo cried, a waterfall of tears streaming down his face, soaking Linn's shoulder. Linn smiled, a deep, contented smile, and hugged him back just as tightly. The master and dog duo stayed like this for a long moment, simply holding each other, finding solace in their shared bond. Eventually, the tears subsided, and a sense of calm settled over them. They untangled themselves, their faces still damp, but their hearts lighter, and eventually, they went to bed, their unspoken understanding a comforting presence in the quiet night.
Yuzu and Daisuke stand in the brightly lit kitchen. Yuzu, with a gentle smile, offers a steaming cup of tea and a plate of artfully arranged snacks to a visibly bewildered Daisuke.
"What's this for?" The giant asked, his brow furrowed in confusion.
Yuzu giggled, a light, airy sound. "It's just my way of saying thank you for rescuing me." She bowed deeply, her blond hair falling forward.
Daisuke looked perplexed, scratching his cheek. "Linn did most of the work; I just helped a little." He picked up a snack, a sweet-smelling pastry, and took a bite. "Besides, I am your bodyguard; that's my job."
Yuzu's smile faltered, a hint of sadness touching her lips. "That's actually what I wanted to talk to you about."
"Oh?" Daisuke replied, his tone questioning.
"Yes, I no longer need your services as a bodyguard," Yuzu stated, her voice soft but firm.
"I see," Daisuke said, his expression unreadable.
"I'm sure you already figured that I was using you to protect me from my village. Now that the villagers are no longer chasing me, I don't need a bodyguard anymore."
"As I thought, you were using me," Daisuke said, his voice flat.
"I'm really sorry," Yuzu bowed again, her apology heartfelt. "You don't need to travel with us anymore, and you can keep the money."
"Hmph, fine by me," Daisuke grunted, taking another bite of his snack. "That means I can spend my days with Miss Cheerilee," he added, a lovestruck expression softening his otherwise stern features. Yuzu giggled, a genuine burst of amusement, before she wrapped her arms around Daisuke, much to the giant's surprise and confusion.
"It was nice meeting you, Daisuke-san. Even though our time was short, I had a lot of fun," Yuzu said, her voice muffled against his chest, before she released the hug and bowed once more. "Goodbye, Daisuke-san. I wish you luck on your journey." Yuzu hurried out of the kitchen, leaving Daisuke to watch her go, his expression still unreadable, a single half-eaten snack held loosely in his hand.

Morning outside the cabin
The morning sun cast long shadows as Linn Tomodachi and Yuzu stood before the rustic cabin, poised for their departure. Around Yuzu's neck, the vibrant blue pendant pulsed with a subtle glow.
"Thank you again for rescuing me, Linn," Yuzu said, bowing deeply.
"It's no problem at all. What are friends for?" Linn replied, a sheepish grin spreading across his face as he rubbed the back of his neck. Suddenly, Tomo piped up, his voice cutting through the quiet.
"So, is what that Gerard guy said true?" Tomo asked, his small eyes fixed on Yuzu.
Yuzu looked down, her gaze falling to the worn wooden planks of the porch. "Yes, it's true. I'm sorry for lying and using you two. I truly hope you can forgive me."
"It's okay, Yuzu. I forgive you," Linn said, offering a warm smile. Yuzu's lips curved into a small, grateful smile in return.
"I don't," Tomo declared, his words surprising both of them.
"Tomo?!" Linn exclaimed, his brow furrowed in disbelief.
Tomo glared at Yuzu, his usual playful demeanor replaced by a stern expression. "After everything you put my master through, and all the trouble we went through to get you, not to mention the betrayal and manipulation, I don't see how I can ever forgive you."
Yuzu blinked, then, with a mischievous glint in her eyes, she reached into her hoodie. She pulled out a perfectly grilled meat skewer, fragrant and glistening, and offered it to Tomo. Tomo's stern expression instantly melted, his eyes transforming into cartoonish hearts as he stared at the succulent offering. He snatched the skewer and, with a joyful cry, glomped Yuzu in a bone-crushing hug.
"I forgive you!!" Tomo squealed. Linn face-faulted, a bead of sweat trickling down his temple.
"Oh boy…" Linn sighed, resignation coloring his voice.
As Yuzu scratched Tomo's chin, he purred contentedly. She then turned to Linn, her expression thoughtful. "Linn, why did you rescue me?"
"What do you mean?" Linn replied, genuinely confused.
"We haven't known each other for that long, and not to mention, I betrayed and used you. You had no reason to help me."
"It's because of what you said back in the forest," Linn explained, his voice softening as a memory surfaced.
Flashback
"Y-yuzu… wait," Linn had whispered, his voice weak, fading in and out of consciousness. Yuzu merely stared at him, her lips slowly forming a silent plea, a desperate utterance.
"Help me."
Present
"I see," Yuzu said, her initial understanding shifting, "but that's still not-"
"There's more," Linn interrupted, his voice gaining a firm edge. "I didn't have many friends growing up. People were either scared of me or wanted nothing to do with me. Then I met Kaila and Erica, and not only were they not afraid of me, they genuinely wanted to be my friends. That's why I want to rescue them so badly—those two are my only friends-"
"Ahem," Tomo spoke up, a dry cough interjecting.
"Only human friends," Linn corrected, a slight flush on his cheeks. "Outside of Kaila, Erica, and Tomo, I had no other friends until I met you. You cared for me, you helped me, and you treated me like a normal person. That's why I rescued you, because you're my friend."
"I see," Yuzu said, a thoughtful expression on her face, "and my motherly nature doesn't bother you?"
"Oh no, it does," Linn stated with blunt honesty.
"You didn't have to be so blunt about it, you big meanie!" Yuzu turned sideways, puffing her cheeks in mock offense. Linn laughed, a genuine, joyful sound.
"But that's what makes you who you are, and I wouldn't have it any other way." The two shared a comfortable laugh, a silent understanding passing between them.
"So what are you going to do now?" Tomo asked Yuzu, his gaze piercing. Yuzu looked at him, confused.
"What do you mean, boy?" Linn asked, a hint of curiosity in his tone.
Tomo finished his meat skewer with a decisive bite and explained, "The only reason she wanted to travel with us was to protect herself from her village. Now that they are no longer chasing her, she has no reason to travel with or help us."
"Tomodachi!" Linn scolded, his voice sharp with reprimand.
"I'm just saying..." Tomo mumbled, glancing sideways, an almost imperceptible shrug of his shoulders.
Yuzu smiled sadly, a wistful look in her eyes. "No, it's okay, Linn. Tomo-chan's right. I did use you guys, but I wasn't lying about wanting to help you find your friends, and I do have a reason to travel with you guys."
"Oh?" Linn and Tomo said in unison, their expressions mirroring each other's surprise.
"Yes," Yuzu nodded, a renewed determination in her gaze. "I'm also looking for someone—a woman named Luna."
"Luna?" Linn replied, the name unfamiliar to him.
"Yes, she is a very important person to me, and she went missing a few months ago. I'm not sure why or where she disappeared, but I'm really worried about her. Since you are on a journey to find your friends, I might run into her along the way if I travel with you guys."
"I see," Linn said, a thoughtful silence descending before he spoke again. "In that case, I'll help you find this Luna person." Tomo raised his eyebrows in surprise, and Yuzu gasped, her eyes widening.
"Really? You don't have to do that," Yuzu said, a hint of disbelief in her voice.
Linn shook his head, his expression firm. "You're going to all the trouble to help me find my friends; it's only fair that I help you find your friend."
"Thank you, Linn," Yuzu said, gratitude evident in her tone.
"You're welcome," Linn replied, a small smile playing on his lips.
"And what about the giant?" Tomo asked, his gaze shifting.
Yuzu looked down, a shadow passing over her face. "Daisuke-san won't be traveling with us anymore." Yuzu looked up, a bright smile returning to her face. "But it's okay, us three-"
"Four."
"Four will…eh?!" The gang turned around abruptly to find Daisuke towering over them, his massive frame casting a shadow.
"Daisuke-san! What are you doing here?! I thought you wanted to stay with Cheerilee-san!"
Daisuke sighed, a weary sound. "Things with me and Miss Cheerilee aren't going to work out."
"Why?" Yuzu asked, her brow furrowed in confusion.
"She said that she can't be with a man who abandons a little girl in need." Daisuke cried comically, large, exaggerated tears streaming down his face, and the gang sweatdropped, a collective sigh escaping them.
"Wait, is that why you came to rescue Yuzu?" Linn asked, a hint of suspicion in his voice.
"No," Daisuke replied, straightening his posture. "She's right. I couldn't call myself a man if I abandoned a lady in trouble. Plus, I still owe the little lady and you guys for helping smooth things with the village of Boulderer."
"But I only helped you so you can help me..." Yuzu looked down in guilt, her voice barely a whisper.
"Doesn't matter the reason," Daisuke said, his voice booming. "A debt is a debt, and I always repay my debt, so that's why…" Daisuke bent his knees in a horse stance, his massive hand extended forward.
"I decided that I will join you guys in finding your friends." The gang was surprised at that statement, a mixture of disbelief and wonder on their faces.
"What's in it for you?" Tomo asked, eyeing Daisuke suspiciously, a wary glint in his eye.
Daisuke straightened up, a smirk playing on his lips. "I've been traveling alone for so long that I forget how nice it is to be around others." He then added, "Plus, you guys seem like the type to cause trouble wherever you go." The gang blushed sheepishly at that statement, a knowing silence falling between them. Daisuke continued, "That sounds good to me. At least I won't be bored with you guys. So what do you say?"
The group exchanged meaningful glances before huddling together in a tight circle, their voices hushed.
"What do you guys truly think of him?" Linn queried, his gaze sweeping over their faces.
"I don't know, master. I have a bad feeling about him," Tomo replied, a frown etched on his face.
"You have a bad feeling about everyone you meet," Yuzu deadpanned, her tone dry.
"And I was right about you, wasn't I?" Tomo smirked, a mischievous glint in his eye. Yuzu responded with a playful pout.
"He seems like a genuinely decent guy, and he did help us," Linn mused, "I see no harm in taking him with us."
"I agree," Yuzu affirmed. "Besides, it didn't feel right parting ways so abruptly. With this, I can truly make it up to him."
"So, do we all agree then?" Linn asked, seeking a unanimous decision.
"Yes," Yuzu said.
"As you wish, master," Tomo added, bowing slightly.
"Then it's settled." The group broke their huddle, their gazes fixed on the approaching giant.
"Okay, you can join us," Linn offered, a warm smile gracing his lips.
"Thank you," Daisuke said, extending his hand for a grateful shake.
"You're very welcome," Linn replied, his fingers enclosing around Daisuke's outstretched hand in a firm shake. Just then, Cheerilee appeared.
"Oh my, you're all still here?" Cheerilee's voice held a touch of surprise.
"Don't worry, we were just on our way," Yuzu replied smoothly.
"O-oh no, I wasn't rushing you or anything," Cheerilee stammered, waving her hands frantically before a warm smile spread across her face. "I'm just glad to see you're all doing well."
"Yeah," Linn said, a genuine thank you in his voice. "Thank you for everything, Miss Cheerilee."
"It was no trouble at all. I just wish I could have done more," Cheerilee confessed, a somber note in her tone.
"It's fine, you did—" Before Linn could finish, he was abruptly pushed aside as Daisuke swooped in, seizing Cheerilee's hands in his.
"Oh, Miss Cheerilee, there's no need to be down; your radiant beauty was more than enough to guide us through these troubled times."
"Oh gee, t-thanks, Daisuke, I appreciate it," Cheerilee giggled nervously, a bead of sweat trickling down her temple.
"No, really, without your unwavering help, we wouldn't have been able to rescue Yuzu. Thank you so much," Linn said, bowing deeply.
Cheerilee's smile softened. "You're welcome, Linn."
"Alright, boys, let's get going," Yuzu announced, and Linn and Tomo nodded in agreement.
"I wish you luck and safe travels on your journey," Cheerilee called out.
The gang waved goodbye, heading down the path. Daisuke, however, remained rooted to the spot, still clasping Cheerilee's hands.
"If you ever need me for anything, just whisper my name, and I shall materialize by your side, day and night, especially at night—ow!" Daisuke's declaration was abruptly cut short as Yuzu, with a firm grip on his ear, dragged him away. "That's enough out of you, Daisuke-san. Let's go," Yuzu stated flatly, pulling him along the path, Daisuke yelping with each reluctant step.
"She just does that to anybody, huh?" Tomo observed, surveying the comical scene, a bead of sweat forming on his brow.
"I'm just glad it's not me this time," Linn said, a small smile playing on his lips.
"You seem to be in a good mood, Master," Tomo remarked.
"I'm just happy that we resolved things with Yuzu." Linn's gaze softened as he looked at Yuzu, who now wore a bright smile. "I feel like I'm finally meeting the real Yuzu."
"I see," Tomo said, a mirroring smile on his face.
"Come on, you two!" Yuzu's voice echoed back to them.
"Coming!" Linn shouted, quickening his pace to catch up as the foursome continued their journey down the winding path, ready for their next adventure.
Later that night
Cheerilee stands in front of the cabin, holding a black transceiver to her ear.
"Cheerilee reporting," she states, her voice clear despite the static.
"Cheerilee! Where have you been?" a crisp, impatient voice demands through the earpiece.
"Forgive me. I ran into trouble, but I completed the mission. Have you heard what happened in Honsen Village?" Cheerilee replies, a hint of weariness in her tone.
"Yes, it caused quite a stir in HQ," the voice confirms, a touch of amusement now present.
"I bet," Cheerilee mutters, her gaze falling on a wanted poster of Linn. "I'm just glad we aren't the only ones."
"We still don't know if he's a friend or foe. We need more from him," the voice states, growing serious again. "In any case, your job is done. Report back to HQ."
"Roger," Cheerilee acknowledges, then hangs up the transceiver. She begins trotting down the dusty path, her eyes fixed on Linn's wanted poster.
'Linn,' she thinks, a mixture of curiosity and suspicion swirling within her. 'I'm not sure what you did in Honsen was for us or your benefit. In any case, I hope you're on our side. I don't want you as an enemy.'
As Cheerilee continues on, a faint, rhythmic ticking sound drifts from the cabin behind her, growing steadily louder.
'Because if you cross us…' her thoughts trail off as the ticking intensifies, then abruptly ceases. Just then, a deafening explosion rips through the cabin, engulfing the small structure in a burst of orange and red flames.
'You wouldn't want us as enemies,' Cheerilee finishes her thought, her voice a cold whisper as she vanishes from the path, leaving the cabin consumed by the inferno.
