Chapter 18 - Hair on Fire

The woman peered down, looking at Mei-Mei with disgust. She was speaking Mandarin to her colleagues but her system had translated it to English. Until she learns Mandarin, she would hear it as English.

"So, you filthy little girl was born of Hao-Hao?" Quin snatched the bag of meat. "I guess you fox spirits love to eat meat."

"Quin, leave the girl alone." A voice from the crowd said.

"I might as well drown myself that to leave this girl." Quin pulled Mei-Mei's hair.

"Ouch, you're hurting me." She wriggled in pain.

"I just started." She laughed.

"That's it." In anger, a few sparks of fire flew out of her hand, igniting Quin's hair.

"Ahhh." She screamed and dropped Mei-Mei.

Mei-Mei ran as fast as she could with the meat in her hand, entered her parent's room and slammed the door shut.

"Mei, what is happening?" Li-li asked.

"Ummm, you know that mean woman who insulted mummy?" She pressed her fingertips together.

"Yes?"

"I may have set her hair on fire."

"You did what?" Both parents screamed.

"She pulled at mine. Plus, she was really mean to mum." She smiled. "But at least I got the meat."

"Weldone Mei-Mei." Hao praised her. "You stood up for your mum and finished an errand."

"Thank you." She bowed. "I'll go to sleep now. I'm exhausted."

"Sure." Li-li patted the girl's head.

"She's strong for a two year old." Mei-Mei heard her father say. "What have you been feeding our child?"

"Nothing. Just food, I guess." She gave him a pained smile. "There is something important we have to discuss."

"What is it?"

"I don't want her to grow up without me." She said in a low voice. "Our journey to The Divine Temple is almost over and so is my time with my daughter."

"What are you saying?"

"I want to stay with her in The Divine Temple."

The two were silent for a while before Hao-Hao answered her. "I will think on it."

"Thank you." She decided to stich a couple of clothes to pass time.

'I can't wait for her training to begin.'
