Chapter 116 - Chapter 116 - We Go to the Wall.

[Chapter Size: 2000 Words.]

Third Person POV.

Westeros.

...

...

A scroll fell onto his desk after reading it about the latest news from the south. Jeor Mormont was quite lost.

The news from the south... a lot had happened in the last two moons, since the war worsened with events shifting the course of several battlefronts, while the kings were reduced to only three.

He knew this would certainly start affecting the Wall at a crisis point here as well.

Regarding the south, the Greyjoys were still invading and raiding the north, while most of the army was still in the south, with some resistances rising.

The bastard son of Roose Bolton was trying to take back Winterfell after Theon's betrayal, who had managed to sneak in and seize the castle by killing all those he grew up with, a betrayal that no one in the north would forget.

He himself, in an even more heinous act, had just placed the two bodies of Bran and Rickon Stark at the front of the castle, while the Bolton banners were advancing to reclaim Winterfell once and for all.

In the southern realms, things had become a complete mess, starting with Renly Baratheon having been killed before the war against his brother.

The forces split after that, with a part following his older brother, Stannis. The Tyrells seemed lost, and it even looked like they were striking a deal directly with the Lannisters, according to rumors from a few weeks ago.

Meanwhile, in the Riverlands, something shocking happened. Robb Stark was assassinated inside the Twins, the seat of House Frey, along with his mother and pregnant wife, all killed as guests of Walder Frey, who had welcomed them as such.

Obviously, Roose Bolton, who survived, was with the Freys and had plotted to strike at the entire northern force outside the castle. Rumors claim that Tywin, Roose, and Walder Frey were united in this.

Later, a letter was issued to all the north by Joffrey Baratheon, first of his name, that Roose Bolton was assuming they would be the new lords of the North and the Starks were declared traitors and enemies of the realm.

At the same time, they were hoping to bring Ned Stark's head to King's Landing, with him imprisoned in the Vale of Arryn, but that didn't happen, as Lord Royce ended up rescuing him, going against his lady in the Vale and taking him out of the Eyrie's prison.

No one knows Ned Stark's whereabouts anymore, but he was certainly a threat to Roose Bolton's position. And the south would never have peace while Ned was alive.

Several lords, placed by Lysa Arryn, were desperately searching for Ned before he left the realm and sought his allies in the North in pursuit of vengeance. Certainly, he wouldn't be doing well after learning of the unfortunate events involving his son and wife. It was expected that he would seek revenge.

Stannis hoped that Ned would publicly support him for his cause, but news about Ned remained unclear.

It was at this moment that Stannis Baratheon ended up preparing an attack to launch against King's Landing. No one knows exactly if the attack had already started there, as the news had not yet arrived and would take at least a moon to get that information, but the city was being guarded only by the City Watch, along with the Kingsguard under the command of Tyrion Lannister, the dwarf who was still the Hand of the King.

There were reports that the Tyrells were marching to King's Landing as well. It seems the deal with the Lannisters had worked.

Another thing people were wondering was: where was the self-proclaimed Daemon Targaryen? By now, everyone was keeping an eye on him, waiting for any new move, but for the last two moons there had been no news of him being seen anywhere.

He simply disappeared.

No one knew what he was planning. That would leave the people in the south quite uneasy, after knowing exactly what he was capable of.

Both those who feared him and those who, in some way, hoped for his return and wanted to ally with him—after all, many people with the intent to support the Targaryens began to appear after the emergence of Daemon and Daenerys in Braavos.

But still, his actions continued to be heard, now that there had been a series of strange things arriving in White Harbor, with ships from Essos bringing food to be stored in the warehouses, saying that Daemon Targaryen was buying all the food from the coast of Essos and had begun storing it all in White Harbor.

No one knew what he was planning, while there was a pretext that all the food he owned belonged to him and he would charge if anything was stolen.

Lord Manderly didn't know how to act in response, fearing greater forces would launch an attack against him or that monster would invade his castle and steal his gold as he had done with many houses—especially now, when the Iron Bank wasn't being so reliable anymore, with Daemon having their support.

Surely Manderly chose based on fear that Daemon would attack his home in King's Landing, after all, he still had Ned Stark alive and would support the Starks.

So he ignored Roose Bolton because his son had been killed at the Twins, at the same time that the Crown demanded all the food be taken to King's Landing, as a declared order.

Lord Manderly was in a difficult situation, and Jon had put him in it, but he couldn't do anything else and just wait.

But that was not Jeor Mormont's main concern that night, but rather the north of the Wall.

The situation was strange. First, his men began to explore the surrounding areas, but started to disappear.

The bodies of some were brought back later. At the same time, those who were simply dead, began to rise and tried to kill them with some kind of sorcery, making them come back to life while emitting animalistic screams.

That unsettled the entire Watch. Even being few, they managed to kill at least twelve Night's Watchmen... It was madness, but Jeor had to seek help from the south and started sending letters.

They received only one reply mocking them. After that, he even sent Ser Alliser to King's Landing, but he was treated as a lunatic, saying that the dead were rising.

Jeor Mormont was frustrated. The south was shattered, and that would affect the Night's Watch like never before—after all, they relied on donations from them to survive, while the Lord Commander of Castle Black was trying to understand what was happening north of the Wall.

First, it was the disappearance of the wildlings. They simply vanished.

Jeor went to Craster to ask for information, but he didn't know, for there were no more members of that people so close to the Wall.

Thus, rangers were dispatched to check the situation—and also disappeared.

This started back when Benjen Stark's group had gone missing.

"You seem worried," a voice came, pulling Mormont out of his thoughts as he looked up and saw the Maester in front of him.

He had delivered the scroll he received and had gotten so distracted that he no longer even noticed him in his room.

"Maester Aemon..." he spoke in a whisper.

"I see that you're quite troubled. Even for a man like me, blind, I can see that," he said.

"We're screwed, if you want to know..." was all Jeor Mormont said.

"Times are growing darker and more uncertain... I don't remember Westeros being like this in all my life—and I am a man who has faced fear and despair..." he commented.

"..." Jeor remained silent, while the maester continued.

"Has there been any news about him...?" he asked carefully.

"No... just more shipments in his name at King's Landing... why is he storing food in the North...?" Jeor muttered, a little worried—there was something wrong there.

"I see... They say he might be inside the Wall... you know." He murmured, and Jeor nodded.

"That's my fear... and we'll be the first to suffer if that happens..." the Lord Commander said with a serious look.

"Not that you would find that too troubling, would you, Maester Aemon..." Jeor muttered, while the old man avoided smiling, keeping a serious expression.

Aemon always wanted to know about Jon Snow since he appeared and stole Daenerys Targaryen, remaining missing with her for over a year.

At the same time, upon hearing that Jon Snow was Daemon Targaryen—as the Iron Bank recognized him—Aemon was very pleased with the news, and he didn't even try to hide it.

Obviously, as a Targaryen, he seemed very happy to see that his family was larger than he had thought, beginning to secretly support the Targaryens. Though Jeor knew it—having lived long enough to recognize the old man's actions—he said nothing.

"They are my only family... I wish I could meet them, but it's curious that he's requesting food. Almost like he's preparing for winter..." Aemon said.

"I don't know... but we should prepare... something is happening, and I feel it will happen soon." Jeor said, rising from his chair as he began to leave, to check on the Night's Watch soldiers.

Meanwhile, there was a small bird perched near the window, unnoticed by anyone. As the room fell into silence, the bird flew to Lord Mormont's desk and, with great difficulty using its beak, opened the drawer, pulling out some letters and placing them on the table, beginning to read them.

It stayed there for a while, reading each line before flying away when it sensed someone was entering—it was Jeor Mormont himself, managing his men as they trained. They had to be the strongest if anything came for them.

At the same time, the eyes shifted, and Daemon Targaryen stood in the middle of an outpost with a large structure, for Jon had taken it after capturing some members of the Night's Watch.

They had over 20 men from the Watch imprisoned there, including his uncle and the others, having caught them spying on the camp he was managing, easily capturing them.

He walked through the camp while everyone seemed to be preparing for something big, and Jon smiled at them. For the moment had finally come.

The Night's Watch stood stunned as they saw all those wildlings wearing armor from various houses while behaving with discipline, realizing they had been training all this time.

"Did you get any information from them?" Mance waited in the middle of the camp as Jon nodded.

"Of course, I was even reading their letters. Things in the south were more intense than I expected... My cousin Robb is dead, it's a shame..." Jon said.

"I'm sorry." Mance wanted to offer some words of comfort while Jon shook his head.

"Don't be. I'm just a little disappointed. I thought we would face each other in the North... after everything I did to make sure he wouldn't get hurt... what a waste." Jon was disappointed, but there was nothing he could do if Robb truly couldn't handle his own problems—how would he face Jon?

"And now?" Mance asked, seeing that Jon was well.

"And now... we go to the Wall, Mance. It's time to finally cross it. Get the men marching and prepare the drums. It's going to be the greatest spectacle the Night's Watch has seen in 8,000 years..." Jon said, while Mance nodded and began shouting orders.

Their time to reach the Wall had finally come—and this was only the beginning. Jon would place his own army in the Seven Kingdoms and march south, all the way to King's Landing.
