Chapter 537 - Chapter 537: Infiltration Plan

In truth, Alaric's plan was nothing more than a spur-of-the-moment decision after Onyxia's sudden appearance.

From his conversations with the Black Dragon Princess along the way, he learned that she had appeared near Grim Batol to monitor the orcs and the other dragonflights on behalf of her father.

Her decision to disguise herself as a human and approach Alaric's camp had also been made on impulse when she stumbled upon them by chance.

As for Deathwing himself, he had yet to notice Alaric and his party's arrival, and Onyxia had not reported it to him either.

After all, though she was his daughter and theoretically on the same side, their relationship was far from harmonious.

The reason for this could be traced back to the reproductive crisis of the Black Dragonflight.

Ever since Deathwing succumbed to the temptations of the Old Gods and betrayed the other dragonflights, the Black Dragons had been hunted and forced into hiding, causing their numbers to dwindle.

While Deathwing grew ever stronger by accepting the power of the Old Gods and the Dragon Soul, this unrestrained growth came at a terrible cost—his body began to crack apart, spewing fire and molten heat from beneath his blackened scales.

Unable to withstand the immense power within him, the Black Dragon King had no choice but to forge a set of adamantine plates to restrain his strength and keep his body from tearing itself apart.

Unlike Talonixa, Alexstrasza, and Ysera, who possessed the reproductive traits of the dragons from the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, Neltharion, as a Guardian Dragon, lacked the ability to reproduce asexually. In fact, aside from Alaric's three "daughters," no dragon in Azeroth could do so.

These female dragons laid unfertilized eggs in a manner akin to the monthly ovulation of mortal women.

Such eggs could only hatch into lesser dragons with limited intelligence and potential.

These creatures were never considered true offspring but were instead used as foot soldiers and cannon fodder in dragon conflicts.

When Deathwing's strength spiraled out of control, all his mates perished after mating with him, unable to withstand his power.

Only Sintharia—Onyxia and Nefarian's mother and Neltharion's first consort—survived, though she was left gravely injured and had since hidden from Deathwing to avoid further harm.

The consequence of all this was the gradual decline of the Black Dragonflight, forcing them to seek alternative methods of reproduction.

Both Nefarian's experiments with chromatic dragons and Deathwing's scheme to use orcs to capture Alexstrasza were desperate attempts to sustain their dying lineage.

In Deathwing's eyes, Alexstrasza, the Guardian of Life with her innate ability to reproduce asexually, was the perfect mate—one who could endure his overwhelming power and serve as an ideal breeding tool for expanding the Black Dragonflight.

However, Deathwing had another potential option: his own daughter, Onyxia.

As previously mentioned, Onyxia inherited her father's formidable physique and power, surpassing not only her brother but even her mother in this regard.

While there was no record of her bearing normal black dragon offspring, the sheer number of lesser dragons she had produced indicated her strong maternal potential.

Even in her human form, Alaric could tell at a glance that Onyxia was perfectly built for childbirth.

Thus, the unfortunate Black Dragon Princess found herself constantly evading her father's grasp while still having to contribute to his cause.

Unlike her mother, who had suffered severe injuries, Onyxia had managed to avoid such a fate—for now.

She had agreed to aid her father in capturing Alexstrasza primarily in the hope that, once he had a suitable breeding tool, he would stop pursuing her.

At the same time, she also sought to evade her brother. Compared to their monstrous father, Nefarian was even more deranged.

This mad scientist had no intention of using his sister for reproduction; instead, he saw her as the perfect test subject for his chromatic dragon experiments.

In his own words, Onyxia, who had perfectly inherited their father's bloodline, was the ideal specimen.

In the original timeline, Nefarian ultimately succeeded. After Onyxia's death, he obtained her corpse and experimented on it.

However, the results were disappointing—reanimating her body did not yield the same strength as a living specimen. As a result, the resurrected Onyxia was far weaker than anticipated.

All of this information was extracted by Alaric during their flight, through what could only be described as an "interrogation" of the Black Dragon Princess.

From this, it was evident that Onyxia had a strained relationship with her father and brother. Though she was forced to work for them, she was always looking for opportunities to sabotage them.

That did not mean, however, that Onyxia was a good person.

Unlike the rest of the Black Dragonflight, she had not been fully corrupted by the Old Gods, but growing up under her father's influence had made her ruthless and cunning.

She found amusement in chaos and slaughter, and much of her cooperation with Deathwing's schemes to spread disorder among humans stemmed from her own sadistic nature.

Regardless, the most crucial takeaway from all this was that Deathwing was already aware of Onyxia's presence in Grim Batol, meaning her activities would not draw his attention.

This presented Alaric and his party with an invaluable opportunity to move freely within Grim Batol.

No matter how well they concealed themselves with magic, any movement would inevitably leave traces.

Alaric's original plan carried a degree of risk, but Onyxia's presence mitigated much of it.

By using the Black Dragon Princess as a decoy, they could hide behind her activities, making misdirection far easier than complete invisibility.

Thus, within the forests of Grim Batol, a female orc clad in armor strode confidently toward the city gates.

This female orc was none other than Onyxia, transformed using advanced polymorph magic.

Just as her father had once disguised himself as an orc to hand over the Dragon Soul, Onyxia had assumed the form of a female orc to establish herself within the Dragonmaw Clan.

While Deathwing's goal had been to enact his sinister plans, Onyxia had done it purely for convenience.

Now, however, Alaric was making full use of her existing identity.

To make this possible, he temporarily lifted part of the restraints he had placed on Onyxia, allowing her just enough freedom to assume her orcish form.

Meanwhile, Alaric and his three companions remained hidden by powerful invisibility and levitation spells, closely shadowing Onyxia as she entered Grim Batol.

Of course, they were also ready to strike at any moment, keeping the Black Dragon Princess under constant threat, ensuring that she dared not make any reckless moves.
