The next morning, my clones report back. Kaleb never got the chance to sink his fangs into the women of Mystic Falls. Instead, they replaced his meal with elders—far less tempting, but still enough to keep him fed. Meanwhile, Dana and Sasha are locked away in the high school cells.
Turning over, I see Lizzie still asleep, her golden hair spread over the pillow like a fallen angel. She looks almost innocent—if I didn't know any better. I trail a finger down her arm, watching as she stirs, her lips parting slightly. A thrill runs through me at the sight.
"Wake up, princess," I murmur, pressing my lips to hers. She sighs into the kiss, still heavy with sleep, and for a second, I consider dragging this moment out, but we have work to do. "Get dressed. We need to go to breakfast before your father starts asking questions."
She nods drowsily, rubbing her eyes as she sits up. I help her bathe, my touch lingering under the guise of care, enjoying the way her breath catches when my hands skim a little too low. When I'm satisfied, I use *Restore* on my body—wiping away any scent, any evidence. Nothing can betray me.
Leaving the room, I step into the hallway just as Hope exits hers. She spots me immediately, a slow smile curling on her lips. There's something in her eyes—curiosity, attraction, a challenge.
I step forward, closing the distance.
"Morning," she whispers.
I don't respond. Instead, I take her into my arms, tilting her chin up before crashing my lips onto hers. She melts into me, her hands sliding up my chest as I deepen the kiss, savoring the way she shivers under my touch. When I finally pull away, her breathing is uneven.
We walk downstairs, fingers entwined.
As we near the dining hall, my attention shifts.
Jed—the so-called Alpha of the werewolf pack—is snarling at Raphael, trying to intimidate him while Josie watches from the side. I arch a brow. Raphael being here means one thing—Landon's back.
And speak of the devil—there he is, standing off to the side, watching me and Hope. His face twists, a flicker of jealousy darkening his eyes before he slowly turns and walks away.
I don't bother hiding my smirk.
Turning back, I stride toward Jed, stepping between him and Raphael with calculated ease.
"Hey, puppy," I say coolly, letting the insult sink in. "You better stop barking before I take your Alpha position. And trust me, once that happens, no wolf will give a damn about you. After all, they know a real Alpha when they see one."
Jed's nostrils flare. His pack members tense beside him.
"You don't intimidate me," he growls.
I chuckle, dark and slow. "Oh, but I do. And if you keep pushing me, I'll challenge you right here, in front of everyone. Or—" I tilt my head mockingly, "—do you prefer something more... intimate? Just you and your pack watching as I put you in your place?"
His eyes blaze with fury, his fists clenching at his sides, but he doesn't take the bait. Smart boy. With a final glare, he turns on his heel and storms off, his lapdogs following close behind.
I laugh as they leave.
A few moments later, Lizzie joins us, sliding into the seat beside me while Raphael mutters a begrudging thanks. He insists he could've handled it himself, but I just wave him off. He's not important. Not like the three girls now sitting at my table—Josie, Lizzie, and Hope.
The morning is *perfect*.
At least, for twenty minutes.
Then, Alaric ruins it.
He calls for an assembly, the sheriff standing beside him. Their expressions are grave.
"Dana and Sasha have gone missing," Alaric announces.
Murmurs ripple through the crowd. My face remains impassive.
"We need volunteers to go to Mystic Falls High and investigate."
Hope, Lizzie, Raphael, and MG immediately step forward. Kaleb joins, though he looks less than thrilled. Josie stays behind, apparently too busy with classwork.
And then, Alaric turns to Landon.
"You were at Mystic Falls recently. You're coming too."
Landon barely reacts, his gaze flickering to Hope for a fraction of a second before nodding.
I watch him carefully.
This day just got *very* interesting.
With everything settled, Alaric and the sheriff left to search for clues, while the rest of us were taken to Mystic Falls by Dorian.
Of course, I already knew the truth—the so-called "creature in disguise." An Arachne, hidden in someone's skin, waiting for its next victim. But I wasn't concerned. My clones were already tracking its every move.
The girls decided to split up, making it easier for me to send clones after them. Another clone trailed Kaleb, who, unsurprisingly, had already chosen his meals for the day. That wouldn't do. With a flick of my will, his "snacks" were swapped—young, unsuspecting women replaced by frail old men teetering on the edge of death. If by some mistake he turned them into vampires? Well, *I* would make sure they disappeared.
Now alone, I decided to indulge myself.
Mystic Falls High had no shortage of *beautiful* girls, and I took my time getting acquainted with the best of each year. Empty hallways became our sanctuary, stolen moments filled with heated whispers and soft gasps. One by one, I marked them, ensuring that my scent lingered and my dragon mate mark bound them. The mark ensured two things: they would crave no other man unless he was stronger than me, and the weak would instinctively avoid them.
It was intoxicating—watching their eyes glaze over, knowing that even if they didn't understand it yet, they *belonged* to me.
I was just finishing with a pair of sisters when one of my clones dispersed, alerting me to the meeting outside.
*Perfect timing.*
On my way to the parking lot, another clone sent an urgent update—Landon had found the Arachne and was running straight toward it. I smirked. *So leaving him alone speeds things up? Noted.*
When I arrived, the group was already deep in discussion. Alaric had called with disturbing news—they had found Dana's "corpse."
At first, everyone assumed it was a vampire attack, immediately pinning suspicion on Kaleb. But then, in front of them, Dana's body *melted*, leaving behind nothing but an empty shell of skin.
Confusion spread through the group.
That's when Landon arrived, panting and disheveled. All eyes turned to him, suspicion thick in the air.
"You think I *did* this?" he demanded. "That I'm hiding something?"
Silence.
His expression hardened. "*Fine*. I can prove it."
With a flourish, he pulled out something grotesque—a chunk of flesh peeled straight from the school bully's face. It wriggled unnaturally, like it was still *alive*.
"The thing looks like a spider," he said, voice tight.
MG's eyes widened. "An Arachne…"
Before they could start a tracking spell, another clone sent me urgent news—Josie and Raphael had been caught in a spider's web at the treehouse.
*Of course.*
I gave the order for them to be freed and turned back to the group. "The creature's already heading toward the school."
"I can take three of you with me," I added, stretching my wings. The girls immediately chose me—no hesitation.
The boys?
Kaleb and MG could run. And Landon?
Well, no one cared about Landon.
With my wings slicing through the air, we reached the treehouse in record time. As we landed, my clone erased itself, leaving me to take in the scene firsthand.
Josie and Raphael were tangled in thick, silken threads, struggling to free themselves. And near them—Sasha's *body*, lifeless and unmoving.
We barely had time to react before a sickening *crunch* echoed through the woods.
Spinning around, we saw him—the idiot from Mystic Falls High—staggering forward, half of his face transformed into a monstrous spider.
He hissed, his mandibles twitching.
*Disgusting.*
I moved to end him right then and there, power crackling through my fingertips, but before I could strike, the girls stepped forward.
"He's ours," Hope said.
Lizzie smirked, magic dancing in her palm. "Let's have some *fun*."
With a flick of their hands, they linked their powers, magic swirling between them in a devastating crescendo.
The Arachne had time for only one final, wretched screech—
Before he *exploded*.
Blood and ichor splattered across the trees, leaving only a gory mess in his wake.
I wiped a stray droplet from my cheek and smirked.
One monster down.
Now, we wait for the next one.
