Standing in the little building behind the Keep they could sense that they had found their destination. Looking down the dark stairs they prepared themselves for what rested below.
Using his magic, Tarquin created a touch for each of them to give them light to travel down the stairway.
They descended the stairs slowly, their senses on high alert. The air grew colder and damper as they descended. As they continued, the darkness seemed to press in around them like a living thing. But as they reached the bottom of the stairs, they saw it - a glint of light in the distance, reflecting off the walls of the small chamber.
And then, suddenly, they were surrounded by an army of Giant Spiders. Oversized arachnids lurked in the shadows, their beady eyes glowing with an otherworldly light. Dropping from the ceiling, they seemed to be waiting for just the right moment to strike, and Tarquin and Lexi knew they had to act fast.
Lexi drew her sword, its blade glinting in the dim light. Tarquin reached for his fire spells, his hands shaking with anticipation. The spiders crept closer, their legs twitching with an unnatural speed.
"Here we go," Tarquin said, his voice steady. "I'm starting to hate spiders."
"Let's get this over with," Lexi added, her eyes fixed on the nearest spider.
The battle was intense and chaotic. The spiders were relentless, their venomous fangs snapping wildly as they tried to attack. Tarquin used his fire to drive them back, sending flames dancing across the stone floor. Lexi used her sword to slash at the spiders' legs, trying to cripple them before they could get too close. Bodies were slowly beginning to pile up around them.
But despite their best efforts, the spiders kept coming. They were too numerous, too fast, too deadly. Tarquin and Lexi fought with every ounce of strength they had, but they were starting to tire. It was impossible to tell just how many they had killed or how many they were yet to face.
Just when it seemed like all hope was lost, Lexi spotted a gap in the spiders' defenses - a small opening between two massive webs. Without hesitation, she darted forward, her sword flashing in the dim light.
"Go!" she yelled to Tarquin. "Head this way."
He followed close behind, his fire blazing with renewed ferocity. Together, they charged through the opening, using their combined strength to clear a path through the spiders.
Finally, they reached the artifact - a small chest adorned with intricate carvings and symbols. It was locked tight, but wasting no time, Tarquin quickly put the chest and all into his pack. They could worry about opening it once they were safely away from this place.
With a triumphant cry, they had claimed their prize. But as they turned to leave, they knew that this was far from over - they still had to get back out of the keep alive...
Using his magic fire like a torch Tarquin continued to attack the spiders that were approaching them. Lexi, with her blade slicing through limbs and bodies they were able to get back out of the chamber.
As they emerged from the small chamber, Tarquin and Lexi found themselves face to face with the leader of the giant spiders, a monstrous creature with eyes that glowed like embers. It was clear that it had been waiting for them, biding its time until the perfect moment to strike. The giant spider enraged by the death and destruction the two of them had made, stood blocking their path with eyes glowing.
"You shouldn't have come here," the spider hissed, its voice like a rusty gate. "You shouldn't have disturbed the rest of the ancient ones. Now you shall pay the price for your arrogance."
Lexi raised her sword, ready to face the spider once again. "We were not here to disturb anyone," she said, her voice steady. "We were just here to retrieve the artifact. It is your group that has attacked us."
The spider laughed, as much as a spider is able to laugh, its body shaking with malevolent glee. "You'll never leave this place alive," it sneered. "This is the domain of the ancient ones, and you are just trespassers."
With a sudden burst of speed, the spider launched itself at Tarquin and Lexi, its long legs snapping wildly as it attacked. The two adventurers fought back with all their might, using every trick they knew to fend off the spider's deadly attacks. Fire flew from Tarquin's fingers, but it did not seem to slow the spider in its attacks.
Despite their best efforts, they were again starting to tire. The spider's venom was coursing through their veins, weakening them with every passing moment. They knew they had to end the fight quickly, or risk falling prey to the spider's deadly bite.
Pulling two of the flasks Tarquin had obtained at the Apothecary he passed one to Lexi. They quickly drank them as they continued to fend off the spider. Tarquin had known that there was a risk that they could be injured, which is why he had asked for the healing potion to have with him just in case.
Quickly, the potion began countering the effects of the venom in their systems.
In a flash of inspiration, Lexi remembered a trick she had learned from an old book on combat tactics. She feigned weakness, allowing the spider to pin her down with its legs. And then, in a sudden burst of strength, she used her sword to strike back at the spider's vulnerable abdomen.
Tarquin took advantage of the distraction to launch a blast of fire at the spider's head, sending it reeling back in agony. The two adventurers took advantage of the opening to make a run for it, dashing back up the stairs and out of the keep as fast as their legs could carry them.
As they emerged into the bright sunlight, they collapsed onto the grass, exhausted and battered. But they knew they had succeeded - they had retrieved the artifact, and they had lived to tell the tale.
