Katherine didn't even remember how she managed to get through the rest of the workday. The office had never felt so cold, the walls never so suffocating. She did her tasks mechanically, but her thoughts kept drifting back to the two women she overheard at the vending machine.
"Kiss him right there in front of everyone."
"She must be his girlfriend."
Felix? Her Felix?
She frowned at the very thought. She had no claim to him—she knew that. But the ache in her chest, the way her hands trembled slightly when she shuffled her papers, told her otherwise. It was all too confusing. The shift in his behavior, the woman showing up at the office twice, the way he suddenly bailed last night without a real explanation. And now, today, he called to say he wouldn't be in. She believed him—of course she did—but it all stacked up, and her heart couldn't ignore the growing sense of being left out.
