Chapter 24 - 06 Injury [Ache]

Chelsea vs. the Box Ghost.

Chelsea held a Fenton Thermos nervously. She glanced back at Danny, hiding in the bushes, and he gave her a toothy smile with two thumbs up. She could do this. It's what she had been training for the last few months. Staring at the warehouse, she thought of her adversary. The Box Ghost was supposed to be weak and easily defeated. All she had to do was show up and put him in the Thermos. Simple.

Right?

She took a deep–though unnecessary–breath and slowly headed into the warehouse. Once inside, she could hear Boxy rummaging around in his prized collection of cardboard boxes. Hopefully, he wouldn't see her before she could catch him. Wait. She could turn invisible. She did that and continued onward.

Her sweaty hands shook while she clutched the Thermos. Just a little farther, and the Box Ghost would be in view. There he was! Chelsea raised the Thermos, but it fumbled out of her hands. She watched with dread as it careened to the ground, where it landed with a loud crash.

She looked up at the same time as the Box Ghost. The two stared at each other for a moment, then Boxy cried out, "Beware!" and sent boxes hurtling toward Chelsea.

She hovered fixed in place as the parcels came at her. She didn't even go intangible, so that they would pass through harmlessly. They smashed into her with enough force to knock her to the ground and bury her. One piece of cardboard slashed her arm with a surprisingly sharp edge, making her cry out in pain.

The stinging injury woke her up. Chelsea made a burst of energy, throwing the boxes off of her. She readied an ectoblast and looked for the Box Ghost. He was no longer in sight. Where did he go?

"Boxy, where are you?" Chelsea singsonged.

"I am the Box Ghost!" her enemy roared, flying out from behind his boxes. "Tremble in fear at this box from Al's Pet Food!"

Another box soared Chelsea's way, but this time, she went intangible to avoid it.

"You know, you're ruining perfectly good product," Chelsea said. "Well, maybe some of it is good." She rocketed down and scooped up the Fenton Thermos. This time her hands were steady.

"Eat soup, box boy!" she declared.

"Not the cylindrical containment unit!" the Box Ghost shrieked as he disappeared inside the Thermos.

Chelsea capped the Thermos with pride. Her first time out, and she did it! She defeated the Box Ghost! Then she felt the ache in her arm and looked down. The skin was already knitting together, but ectoplasm leaked from the wound. Danny had told her about the ghostly healing factor, but it was fascinating to see it in real time.

After a moment staring at her healing injury, she hurried out of the warehouse to meet Danny.

"I did it!" she said, shaking the Thermos.

Danny came out from his hiding spot. "Nice job! Oh, looks like you got hurt. Are you okay?"

Chelsea shrugged. "Yeah, it's already healing. It's so cool!"

"Let me bandage that for you," Danny said and pulled out a first aid kit.

"Thanks," Chelsea said as he covered the wound with a large bandage.

"What happened?"

Chelsea blushed. "N-nothing."

"It was not nothing," Danny countered. "Don't worry. I had trouble with my first few fights, too."

"You did?"

"Yeah! I had to learn about my powers all by myself!"

"So in other words, I shouldn't have screwed up because I had a mentor."

"That's not what I meant, and you know it," Danny said.

"Right," Chelsea said, smiling. "Thanks for being such a great mentor!"
