From a very early age, Kana knew she was different from the elves around her. For one, the girl's skin was much darker in color. She had dark grey skin, and every other elf was much more fair.
Her adoptive mother patted Kana's head. "You're growing up so big. It wasn't even that long ago when we took you in."
Kana smiled and wrapped her arms around Mother Theresa. The little girl was only about 10 years old, and she still had no idea who her real parents were. Nobody ever mentioned them, and even when Kana asked, Mother Theresa always shook her head and claimed she didn't know.
However, even though people kept secrets from her, Kana knew that it was only because she was a little girl. The adults in the village kept secrets from the other kids as well. If Kana could change anything, it would only be the way some of the elders looked at her.
"I want to play outside," Kana said. "I can bring back some apples for later."
