As time went on, silent films gradually shifted from substance to spectacle, with actors' performances becoming more exaggerated, integrating more spoken language into their actions rather than relying on intertitles.
Although this indeed solved some problems, not all films could achieve this. Good scripts, good action design, and good actors were still in the minority.
There was a survey conducted by an organization which found that close to forty percent of people who were disinterested in films cited their inability to understand the dialogue as the reason.
Of course, there was also the possibility that they simply couldn't recognize the words.
But now things were different. They didn't need to recognize words, even illiterate people could understand the complete content of a film through the dialogue, which was also the reason for the steadily increasing box office revenues.
