Chapter 58 - Fire and Shadow

Peter then chipped in "Hermione, you said Voldemort used giants in the last war. How destructive are they? And if he used them here, to help demolish the buildings and cause terror, how can they be taken down?" Hermione replied "Voldemort would send the giants into villages – they would destroy the buildings with ease, stepping on them, throwing boulders on them, or just bashing them with tree trunks that they used like clubs. While the giants were doing that, the Death Eaters were slaughtering the villagers." "So, these giants, they are large enough and strong enough to use tree trunks as clubs" summarized her father. "Yes" she confirmed. "Could a recoilless gun or anti-aircraft gun take them out?" Peter asked. "I don't really know?" replied Hermione. She got her book out on Magical Creatures. "It says here that the giant's greatest vulnerabilities are its eyes. It's skin is very resistant to spells." She read. RJ then pitched in "If their eyes are a vulnerability, what about its ears?" "Didn't Jack beat his giant by chopping down the beanstalk, causing the giant to fall" added in one of the Readiness Unit. "No beanstalks here Jarad" shouted out another. "General, in Vietnam and in the far east they would dig pits with spikes at the bottom to catch or kill large animals like lions. We could excavate a few pits and put iron spikes at the bottom. Cover the pit with artificial grass." Peter said.

General Black summarized: "I like the idea of recoilless guns, possibly RPGs as well for weapons. The eyes and ears are the most vulnerable points on their bodies. The concept of tripping them and causing them to fall may be good if it can be done safely. The idea of using pits is a good one – low tech and effective, and reversible when we are done. Let me know if you can think of anything else. Miss Granger, you also mentioned Dementors. Any ideas?"

"Dementors are creatures of the dark. Not that they don't come out during the day, but they abhor fire and the Patronus Spell. It's a very difficult spell for any wizard or witch. I certainly can't cast it. Dementors are creatures that affect the environment and the mind. They make you feel your worst memories. Whatever you do, do not let them kiss you – that is how they extract your very soul from your body. Once the soul is removed, you are left basically a human emotionless husk. When Dementors are present, they generate a searing cold, so cold that frost appears on windows and other surfaces. What about using infrared? Would infrared scopes be able to see the opposite of heat?" she asked.

"Most infrared scopes see heat signatures in white or red. Everything else is shades of gray and black." The unit sniper responded. "Is there anything that can give us images of cold or freezing temperatures?" Hermione asked. Theodor, from Evan's team, said "I used to work for an HVAC repair company. They had a thermal imaging device that just came out a few years ago, that shows where there is moisture or cold in the walls. Would that help?" he asked. "Are they hand-held devices? Battery operated or do they require connection to an electrical outlet?" the General asked. "Handheld, batteries, sir" responded Theodor. "Well, that would help with locating what we can't see with our normal eyes. What about taking them out?"

"What about flame throwers, sir?" asked one of the Readiness Unit soldiers. "It definitely has possibilities. They would likely work on the Giants and wizards too. The only real problem I can see is it requires the operator to get up close, within 10 meters to be effective. That worries me, as it puts the operator within striking range of wizards and creatures alike." The General responded.

"What about lasers, sir?" asked Evan. "I know they use lasers to cut into metal and diamonds." He added. "It is my understanding that those kind of lasers only work from a close distance, only a few inches, otherwise the light gets dispersed. Although long-distance military grade lasers were presented in the James Bond movie Moonraker back in 1979, they haven't made it to the real world yet." The General chuckled.

"Sir, what if we can accomplish everything with conventional weapons that are readily accessible?" Evan began. "Go on Midshipman." The General prompted. "Sir, the Death Eaters want to attack the tower, which includes the gate and bell. They can do so from inside or outside. The Giants are too large to attack from inside – they will likely attack from outside. The Dementors will also likely attack from the outside. Fire can't burn without oxygen. Let's flood the annexes near the tower, and the tower itself with nitrogen. It is abundant, readily available, and non-toxic. If we need to contain it, we can put up termite tenting over as much of the buildings as we can. We can even put two or three small teams inside the annexes and tower, equipped with supplied air to take out any tangos inside. The rest will be forced outside. Since we know they will try to destroy the tower, set up lines of claymores on both sides of the tower – when they congregate, we set them off. Outside we can also have sniper teams on the rooftops of the quad – it allows us the advantage of height and line-of-sight. Eighty yards is easy for snipers and for all of our unit members, I am sure."

"For the Giants we know they want to destroy the tower, so they are likely to attack it either from the outer side of the tower or from in the quad – we can concentrate the pits in those areas. Provide a few of the sniper teams on the roof tops with the recoilless guns. They can focus first on those Giants at or near the building, and get those that fell in the pits after. The biggest wildcard will be the Dementors. You told me the other day the best defense against a greater force is to lead them by the nose and decimate their lines. I think you were referencing Sun Tsu. What if we can lead these Dementors into a kill-zone corridor lined with claymores and flares. Along the center of the corridor we could create a shallow pool of gasoline. Hermione, you told me these things can literally fly, right? If they float over the pool, we can remotely set it on fire using a remote-detonated flash bomb. It would set the Dementors on fire. We could even set up flame throwers aimed at that spot, remotely activated."
