I woke up at exactly 6:30am to prepare for school. I was in my final year which I was very grateful for. Most of my classmates are not deaf like me but they treat me as a normal person. What I disliked was the look of pity they give me sometimes. I made sure to get ready on time and headed downstairs to have breakfast with my mum and older brother. I lost my father when I was four years old so I didn't know him that much although, mum keeps telling me about him and how he was before he died.
" Crystal, would you like some pancakes?"
My older brother, Drey, asked using sign language . My family members had to learn sign language to be able to communicate with me before I learnt to walk properly.
" yes, please "
He smiled then put two pancakes on my plate. My brother was my best friend due to the fact we shared almost everything including some secrets our mum didn't know and also the fact that he looks out for me.
Once I was done with breakfast, Drey walked me to the bus stop and waited until the bus came. I got in the bus when it arrived and waved him goodbye then I put on my hearing aids which wasn't useful because I couldn't hear anything except minor frequencies but I felt comfortable with them on.
As I got to school, I was immediately engulfed in a hug. That was definitely Penelope, my best and only friend.
" did you miss me?!"
She asked talking as slow as possible so I could read her lips as learning sign language was a terrible idea. She was absolutely terrible at that so she stuck to speaking slowly, texting and writing on note pads. I smiled and nodded
" good to hear! Have you seen the news recently?"
I looked at her in confusion, shaking my head negatively
" seriously?! You need to see it now!"
Looking at the time, I pulled out my note pad and wrote
' can we talk during lunch? I don't want to be late for lectures '
She read it and smiled
" okay, see at lunch time!"
Waving goodbye, she began to run to her morning lectures. We both study different courses so we had separate lectures. She was studying financial accounting while I was in the Arts department. On getting to my class, I observed that everyone was in a click or group, earnestly discussing one thing or another which obviously is more important than studies. The guy who usually sits beside me shoved his cellphone in front of me so I could see the reason the whole class is so lively. Apparently, a well known business man who happened to be a sponsor for this institution, was coming for a tour today to see how the school is fairing. Well, that's new to me! The guy who sits beside me was called Micheal and he mostly used sign language to speak with me . Lucky or unlucky for me, he has a deaf cousin.
" he will be here at 1:00pm. You didn't know about it?"
I shook my head negatively. Was this what Penny was trying to tell me this morning? Before we could continue our conversation, our lecturer stepped in, causing everyone to seize their chatter. Lectures went on for about two hours until break time and it usually starts at 9:00am. Penny was already at our table waiting for me to tell me the gossip that I had already gotten in class.
'I already know '
Was the first thing I wrote and showed her.
" well? Isn't he handsome? What if he falls in love with you at first sight?"
I rolled my eyes
' that seems like your dream for a boyfriend '
She laughed after reading it and said
" yeah, you're completely right. I also heard that he is very ruthless and a massive best freak "
' where do you get your news from? You're starting to scare me'
She laughed. We are and discuss for a while be fore going for next lectures.
As I was heading back, I was unfortunately sent to hand some documents to the secretary's office and on my way, I bumped into someone, causing me to scatter the documents to the floor. Looking at the documents on the floor, I instantly began picking it up as quickly as I can because I was told it was very important and needed urgently. I was still focused on picking up the papers when a pair of black shoes came into my line of sight. Looking up, I was met by a pair of stunning deep ocean blue eyes which belonged to a very handsome Greek god who happened to be slightly pissed, judging from his furrowed brows. He happened to be saying something but I didn't get it so I quickly took out my note pad and wrote down
' can you please repeat what you said earlier?'
He appeared to be stunned for a few seconds before he collected my note pad and wrote
' be careful next time, you could get hurt '
Reading it, I instantly smiled and nodded then I wrote down
' I'm so sorry I bumped into you. I'll just pick up the papers and leave '
As soon as I handed the pad to him, I had bent down to continue picking up the papers when I was suddenly pulled up from the floor.
" don't worry about that, my assistant would do it"
I read his lips as he spoke a little slower for me to understand. The man who happened to be his assistant smiled at me and helped me pick up the documents left. I, of course, wanted to help but the handsome Greek god didn't let go of my wrist.
After taking the documents, I smiled and nodded in gratitude before making my way to the secretary's office . This is really something Penny will die for!
