Lucas fell silent. His eyes searched his wife's face in confusion, as if trying to decipher the meaning behind her question. "What do you mean?" he asked quietly.
Haisley turned to face him directly, her eyes locking with his. "Are you being kind to me just because I'm your wife?" Her voice was still calm, but her gaze carried a storm.
"Or am I just a tool to repay your family's debt?" She took a breath, then continued in a colder tone. "Or is it just guilt? Trying to atone for something even I don't know about?"
Lucas frowned, his brows deeply furrowed. He truly didn't understand where this conversation was heading. "Honey, what's going on in your mind? Why are you asking me this?"
There was a hint of panic in his voice now. "Is something wrong at university? Are you overwhelmed with assignments? Why are you talking like I—"
"Because I just realized... I don't know who you really are."
