Jack's POV
The time I had with Kai wasn't going to last long. I knew that.
I kissed her. And I tried to memorize her face because this council bullshit might stretch till eternity and I needed the memory of her.
I needed her. Hated that I had to leave. I hated it so much that it was a physical pain.
But it had to be done. I gave the enforcers my word.
And so, when the door opened and the Council enforcers – Torin, Rhea, Bren – re-entered back, I wasn't ready to go but I had to.
There were no playful banter this time. Their faces were set. Official. The friendly demeanor was gone, it had been replaced by duty.
It was time to go. Time to say goodbye.
"Can I have a minute with my mate?" I asked of them.
"They've convened, Bronc," Rhea said, her voice gentle but firm. "It's time."
Kai's hand tightened around mine like a vise. Her eyes that was still a bit too bright, too wide from the coma, locked onto mine.
I recognized the emotions in those beautiful eyes instantly.
