Sophia stood trembling in the doorway, her usually immaculate appearance in complete disarray—blonde hair escaping its updo, silk blouse wrinkled, and bare feet pale against the dark hardwood floors. Emma clutched at her younger sister's arm with white-knuckled intensity, manicured fingers digging so deeply into Sophia's flesh I could see the indentations even from across the lavish hotel suite.
