After walking around the camp for some time, he found an area where many people in white gowns were preparing food. Night was about to fall so they must be preparing for dinner.
He then walked to one of the cooks and asked, "How much time is remaining till dinner?"
Hearing the voice from behind, the cook looked back and squinted his eyes. "There is still around an hour till the food is prepared."
Hearing this, Neuman just nodded and left. He hadn't eaten since afternoon and had to fight the rats and run so much distance so he was very hungry at that moment.
He then thought to just walk around and pass time till the dinner was served. After wandering around for some time, he came across a special area. It looked quite different due to the markings on the ground. It was a wide, circular-shaped arena inside which many of the soldiers were fighting each other with wooden weapons and without any armor.
Those wooden weapons were dull so they weren't able to do any injury to their body. That was the reason they were sparring with wooden weapons and improving their mastery over the weapon.
Neuman's gaze swept over all the swordsmen and other weapon-wielders, landing on the soldiers who wielded spears. Among the hundreds of soldiers, there were only three of them. Despite that, they stood out among all the soldiers. Each of them radiated a fierce aura, their grip firm, as if the spear was an extension of their body.
Though the spears were made of wood, they were still quite lethal to others. Their well-timed thrust could take down others. To prevent others from unnecessary injuries, instead of the spearhead, there was a soft cloth wrapped.
Looking at the spear users, Neuman became immersed in it; he continued to compare his moves with theirs. After his spear technique reached the limit, he felt that he became quite good with the spear, but now looking at the spear users here, he felt he needed to improve more and continued to watch all the spear users one by one and learn things from them.
All the spear users were quite tactful, as they could easily disarm their opponent with a simple thrust or a combination of other moves that he didn't know. But eventually he learned them, but he didn't know if he could perform them just by learning them superficially.
Looking around, he found a stand where many weapons were standing and looking at them, he walked over to the stand and took one of the spears whose head was covered with a cloth. It was quite light compared to the spear he had in his hand. He then put his iron spear over the stand where the wooden spear was resting and took out his armor and put it near the spear.
He wasn't the only one who left his weapon and armor there; all of the soldiers left their weapons and armor there, and there was one person keeping watch on the things that were put there.
After that he moved to the training area and started to move the spear according to what he previously saw. After some time he was surprised to find that he could do the same movements as those spearmen did and felt that it was quite easy and easily performed all the sets.
Doing all of this, he didn't feel any improvement in his spear skills compared to when he upgraded his skill previously. He then came to the conclusion that there was no need for him to practice except when familiarizing himself with the skill after upgrading it.
Neuman then returned to the area where he had put his armor and spear. Putting the wooden spear back and wearing his armor, he left the training area and began to wander around the camp, observing different sections of the camp.
Walking around for so long, he was tired and then thought of resting and remembered the place where he saw other soldiers resting and talking with each other and then walked back to the place.
After he reached the place, he sat down on the ground near the tree. He looked around and found that there were many soldiers like him sitting down talking with others or taking a nap.
"Hey, did you hear, the commander's nephew was injured and they had to leave him because of the rats!"
"Yes, it is all over the camp; not only him, but many of the Unit 5 soldiers died or were injured today."
"I think around thirty to forty people from Unit 05 died today only."
"Since coming here last month, the number was relatively low but today so many of them died."
"The unit's captain even said to let the remaining ones take a rest, as it's going to be quite hard for the rest of the unit to work from now on."
As Neuman heard all these conversations, he quickly pieced all of them together. Unit 5, which was tasked to clear the eastern area, had been caught in a joint attack from both the forest and the sewers simultaneously. This ambush led to heavy casualties and many of them were even severely injured.
Half of them are still recuperating in the tents with bandages and stitches, while some people who had used healing potions had healed and are now either training or roaming around.
They didn't know that the commander's nephew that was left behind was sitting behind them and listening to their conversation. Even Neuman himself didn't know that he was the commander's nephew.
After that, they talked about how they were missing their families and friends and how they had unknowingly passed a month in this mission to get back this city from the wild beasts that had filled the city.
And this mission was about to end in a week or two, as most of the beasts are cleared and all that's left are the core areas, which will be cleared in a day or two, and they are thinking about what they are going to do after returning back to the city.
Neuman still didn't know anything about his life in this world and just wanted to gather his memories back. So, he decided to check on things that can help him level up, like going on night duty. From the information he had gathered, he could go on night duty to check on the surroundings and kill any beast that approached the camp at night.
But he didn't have much information regarding the area, so he was unsure whether he should go on night duty when the rats have much higher power as compared to them on day.
