At this stage, no one would have a defence against mind attacks. Even Aaron doesn't have any, though he has had ghosts for a while, which are known to attack minds.
The problem was not that he was sloppy, but that he couldn't find a mind skill, not in the capital market or in the academy.
Mind skills are rare and very costly, at least that was what the books that Aaron read mentioned about them. Among mind skills, attack skills are a bit more available than defence skills, but the demand is in reverse.
Everyone would like to have a defence skill, even if they didn't have any mind attack skills.
With so much demand for these skills, they would never appear in the market unless the sellers were in dire need of something better for themselves. If not, even if they have extra mind skills, the excess would be left for their descendants.
