Chapter 16 - Chapter 16

Tonight was the formal dinner for everyone in the company. Ayla got dressed and hoped that this was good enough.

She checked her phone and saw that it was time for her to go,

When she arrived all the other employees had dressed up and the women had changed so much, she admired how stunning they looked.

Even if she had put in effort, Ayla knew that she would still look the same, so whatever.

"Geez Ayla, you don't change one bit." One of the guys commented. She could see the others also looking her over and agreeing.

Ayla just nodded and sat by the table designated for the new employees. They were divided according to the company's ranking.

"Ayla." Carrie greeted her.

"You look great Carrie."

"Thank you, sweet Ayla."

The evening began and starters were served.

Everyone was envious of the senior table, the girls swooned over Xavier and the guys envied him.

Not that she could blame either side,

"I wonder how long it will take for us to get the chance to be where they are," Carrie remarked.

"Time will tell," Ayla replied.

"You are right, this is giving us motivation to work our way up the ladder," Carrie replied.

"That's the spirit," Ayla replied.

The main course was served and Xavier got on stage, he began thanking some of his older staff and welcoming us the new interns.

After he finished they carried on eating, dessert was being prepared, and the dance floor was open.

She saw that everyone was waiting for someone to start, he carried on eating, the food was too good, and she drank a bit.

"I wonder who will open the dance floor?" Carrie remarked.

"Probably the seniors," Ayla replied.

"Dance with me."

Bingo Ayla thought, and Ayla knew that they would ask Carrie, well Carrie would be one of the first ones to be asked. Ayla knew that there were some seniors interested in the newbies.

She carried on eating, let them dance and be merry, she would watch,

"Ayla, dance with me."

Ayla coughed out some of her food, was she dreaming or what? This could not be happening.

She turned in shock to find Xavier there and wondered if she could refuse. It was the boss. Why her? He was torturing her.

She tried to make a gesture to show that she didn't want to dance with him, hopefully, he would take the hint and leave her be.

"I'm waiting."

She gave him one more pleading look, please spare me her eyes said but he did not seem to relent.

He nodded toward his hand,

She took his hand, and he led her to the dance floor, all eyes were on them. So much for wearing crap and looking like it, but now he was advertising it that she had missed the memo.

Ayla had never danced, so she didn't know what to do, she wanted to scream in frustration.

To make it worse, her heart was pounding fast, she could hear it in her ear.

Xavier took her hand and placed it on his shoulder, his hand went to her waist. The other he held hers.

"I don't know how to dance." She stuttered out, giving him a heads up in case he felt his toes being stubbed.

He didn't seem to care, "Follow my lead."

"I'm not good at that too, dancing is just not my thing."

He began to move and she tried to follow his steps as she looked at the ground. He was good at it, his steps encouraged hers.

Xavier pulled her tighter and his scent was more intoxicating, don't sniff him she thought mentally.

She looked around and everyone was whispering amongst themselves, Ayla knew what they thought.

Xavier was not helping with the situation and she needed to see what his thought frame was.

This was her chance to make him understand how she didn't want him imposing in her life,

"Sir, um......…." She let out slowly.

"What?"

Ayla battled whether she should carry on or not. Now or never she reminded herself,

"You're making my work life complicated."

"How so?"

"I don't like the attention that I'm getting,"

"What?"

"All eyes are on you and I don't want to be involved in unnecessary things."

"I'm unnecessary?"

"No, I never said that."

"Then what are you on about Ayla?

"What I meant is, I'm sure there must be someone else."

"No."

That was all that he could say and not try to explain. Of course, he was not on the cooking end of everything, that is why he didn't give two shits.

"No? I mean I don't know why you keep doing this." Ayla carried on wanting for them to reach an agreement.

"I can, that's why."

What kind of shitty answer was that? He can? Well, he was the boss, but still, stick to the point Ayla.

"This feels intentional."

She waited for his answer,

"What makes you think that?"
