And amidst all of that, there was Abigail. His wife.
She was innocent in all of this, and yet, she had unknowingly stepped into a storm he hadn't warned her about. It wasn't fair to her. He had kept her out of too much, tried to shield her from the mess, but now it was growing too fast. He couldn't afford to keep her in the dark any longer.
He picked up his phone, then Jerry would pick up the call, placing the phone gently to his ear. His voice came out calm but curious, "Hey babe… what's up? Why the sudden phone call? I wasn't expecting you to call me right now."
There was a pause, the kind that carried a soft smile from the other side of the line, and then Abigail's gentle voice followed, "I just wanted to check on you… I don't know, I just had this feeling. Are you okay? How's everything going?"
