The atmosphere inside the Combat Room was thick with anticipation. High ceilings loomed above the open, circular arena, ringed by black and gold railings. The King's Guard stood shoulder to shoulder, forming a full circle around the arena, eyes locked on the center.
Emeney stood between Anya and Commander Dion, her arms crossed, trying, and failing, to mask the worry in her eyes. Advisor Gray and General Iron stood near the back, both with unreadable expressions, though Gray's eyes sparkled with cunning. A low murmur rose and fell as the room quieted in time to hear the dull thud of footsteps approaching.
Xander was already inside the ring. He stood shirtless, broad and muscular, a dark combat jean hugged tight to his legs, tucked into black boots. His hands were flexing and curling as if they already itched for blood. His eyes burned with fury and intent, locked on the entrance.
Then, the door creaked open.
Rayne entered.
