Chapter 69 - Chapter 69: Battling the Waves Beneath the Sunset

In recent years, things had already improved significantly thanks to Chairman Goodshow reforms.

Before that, the League's position was more or less a formality. The major families were the real masters of the League in every sense of the word.

Ever since Chairman Goodshow who came from a civilian background took office, he used his immense strength to suppress the powerful families and boldly reformed numerous policies. This directly led to a surge in talented trainers from humble backgrounds.

Silas was actually one of the best examples of this change. Before these reforms, a trainer could only choose one advanced subject. There was no such thing as choosing three, let alone the idea of reducing tuition fees.

Without the combined knowledge systems of Pokémon Studies, Pharmacology, and Berry Science, Silas would've found it incredibly difficult to raise his Pokémon effectively from the start.

Had things been otherwise, his entire life path since arriving in this world might have turned out very differently.

But for now, this wasn't something Silas had the strength to get involved with. He lacked the power to influence such matters.

Shaking his head to refocus, he began heading toward the training area at White Cape. He was curious what kind of setup could make so many trainers flock here?

He walked for quite some time. By the time the pure white sand had completely vanished beneath his feet and the surroundings had turned into black reefs, Silas finally saw what was referred to as the training grounds.

The coastline ahead had a massive gap, and under the glow of the setting sun, the sea glittered with golden light.

Waves that didn't look particularly imposing at the water's edge suddenly transformed into violent surges as they were funneled through the gap.

This was the time when the tide was rising. In the distance, the fierce waves reached heights of over ten meters.

And even so, this wasn't the most ferocious part of the tide.

Farther out, near the cliffs, the ocean currents were still driving the tides into even greater waves.

Pokémon were scattered across various areas of the beach depending on their individual abilities.

The weaker ones stayed farther back, training by resisting the smaller waves.

The stronger ones plunged into the sea itself, improving their abilities through intense water pressure and the impact of the crashing tides.

Looking around, there were still only a few dozen Pokémon training here at this hour.

The most eye-catching of them all was a massive Gyarados, faintly visible beneath the water's surface.

Even from a distance, one could see it viciously charging toward the waves with powerful moves, then sinking into the water, only to re-emerge after some time and continue its cycle of battling nature's force again and again.

There was also an Alakazam that stood out. With a wave of its spoon and a burst of bright blue light from its eyes, it let out a loud cry and unleashed its signature move—Psychic.

A massive incoming wave suddenly froze in place midair before losing all momentum and collapsing into a cascade of water that splashed against the rocks on the shore.

A beam of white light flashed as a nearby Magnezone unleashed a devastating Zap Cannon, obliterating the wave with brute force.

The trainers nearby, who were observing their Pokémon's training, now turned some of their attention toward Silas, the new arrival.

This was the most dangerous time to train, and Nurse Joy's handbook had clearly advised against average trainers entering the area at this hour.

They were very curious what kind of strength did this new face possess?

Silas also sensed their curious gazes. The sight of Pokémon challenging the forces of nature stirred his blood.

But his naturally cautious personality held him back. He pulled up Zero, checked his settings, and confirmed that his Pidgeot could indeed train here. Only then did he let out a sigh of relief and released the Pokémon.

"Pidgeo..."

With a loud cry, Pidgeot spread its wings. Its powerful voice and body size larger than most of its species immediately signaled to the surrounding trainers that this Pokémon was no pushover.

Silas called Pidgeot to his side and gave it detailed instructions on today's training focus and safety precautions.

After making sure it understood, he retreated to a relatively safe area along with the other trainers.

Getting swept into those waves was no joke.

Although his physical strength was absurdly good and he could swim just fine, a wave like that crashing down could genuinely be fatal.

Watching Pidgeot swiftly skim across the sea's surface in low flight, Silas couldn't help but feel a little anxious.

After all, Pidgeot wasn't a Water-type Pokémon. If it really got swept into the tide, it would be quite troublesome. All he could hope for now was that it would be extra careful.

As the previous surge of waves gradually calmed, the next one started rolling in from the distance.

On the horizon, the crest of the wave formed a white line that partially blocked the setting sun's afterglow.

The whole world seemed to dim. The incoming wave loomed like a curtain from the sky, covering even the heavens.

He'd seen tidal bores on the Qiantang River in his previous life, but they paled in comparison to this.

In this world, the natural forces were even more exaggerated due to the existence of Pokémon because you could never be sure whether a powerful Pokémon deep beneath the sea had caused the tide simply by shifting its body.

Pidgeot, its entire body glowing with white light, charged toward the wave head-on.

"Pidgeo..!"

Pidgeot's sharp cry echoed through the sky.

Silas stared at it, tense with concern.

This time, according to the plan provided by Zero, the training focus was mainly on Pidgeot's Brave Bird move.

Since learning Brave Bird, Pidgeot hadn't used it much. Whether in terms of energy condensation speed or overall quality, it was far from being as fluid as its other moves.

What's more, beyond Brave Bird lay an even more powerful move Sky Attack.

If Pidgeot couldn't fully master Brave Bird now, the idea of learning Sky Attack in the future would be practically impossible.

In this world, there was no such thing as Technical Machines (TMs). Most Pokémon learned common moves as their level or aptitude increased naturally.

However, for those less common move or especially powerful or difficult ones they had to be taught by another Pokémon who already knew the move.

Take Grassy Terrain for Grass-types, or Trick Room, for instance.

Basically, if a Pokémon had the potential to learn a move (i.e., if it appeared in their move list) and its aptitude was high enough, it could usually pick it up after three or four days of focused training.

Combusken's Rock Slide was an example of this.

Back when he fought Reggie, Combusken's use of Rock Slide had surprised him for a moment. While Combusken could learn Rock Slide, there weren't many individuals who actually used it.

Silas had specifically asked Brock to help teach the move to Combusken.

After all, Brock's Onix was a master of Rock Slide. As for Roggenrola's Rock Slide…

Forget it. That little guy's still just a kid.

Learning such moves was mainly to expand their range of type-based attacks, ensuring they'd have options against unique or tough opponents.

Just as Silas was drifting off into thought, Pidgeot radiating a powerful aura and waves of energy had already charged into the massive wave.

Snapping himself back to focus, he stared toward the other side of the surge.

In that moment, the entire world seemed to fall silent.
