Chapter 173: The Second S-Rank Ninjutsu
Among these two genjutsu, the first was precisely the scene simulation genjutsu Ishiro had initially developed. However, the genjutsu Ishiro developed had very limited use, actually requiring the subject's active cooperation. Ishiro had only performed it once with Kawakita's cooperation.
It was also that time that Ishiro and Kawakita both comprehended sword ki.
This time, Konoha handed over the complete version of the genjutsu, usable in actual combat, to Iwagakure. The genjutsu was named "Mirrored Heaven and Earth Jutsu." It was said that within Konoha, there was an advanced version of this ninjutsu. Ishiro guessed that the advanced version might be related to the Mangekyō Sharingan genjutsu, Tsukuyomi.
The other genjutsu was a group-type genjutsu, precisely the Temple of Nirvana Technique that Kabuto Yakushi had used during the Chūnin Exams of the Konoha 12 in the original story.
In Konoha's view, neither of these genjutsu was very useful. "Mirrored Heaven and Earth Jutsu" had very high requirements for the caster; although Iwagakure had many ninjas, only a small portion could learn it.
And the Temple of Nirvana Technique, in Konoha's eyes, was completely useless. A genjutsu that even Genin could easily break after being cast by an Elite Jōnin – what use could it have?
But Iwagakure's thinking was completely different. Iwagakure included these seemingly useless ninjutsu in the list not with the intention of relying on these one or two ninjutsu to enhance Iwagakure's strength.
What Iwagakure hoped for was to fill the village's void in this field through the research of these ninjutsu.
And both the Temple of Nirvana Technique and Mirrored Heaven and Earth Jutsu had their own specialties and possessed high research value.
Apart from these two B-rank genjutsu, the other B-rank ninjutsu had similar purposes. Except for a few that could be used in actual combat, most ninjutsu were geared towards research rather than battle.
However, Konoha wasn't foolish either. The ninjutsu handed over to Iwagakure this time had relatively singular attributes, concentrated in Wind and Water Release. As for Lightning Release, there wasn't a single one. Of course, there were no Earth or Fire Release jutsus either. Earth Release wasn't needed because Iwagakure hadn't listed it, and Fire Release was unnecessary.
Fire Release ninjutsu, unlike ninjutsu of other attributes, was somewhat similar to Ishiro's Porcelain Release. Neither required a fixed form much; being able to change at will was the best way to exert the power of Fire Release.
Ishiro's Porcelain Release ninjutsu had no fixed names or forms; it was often used however he wished.
Konoha knew Iwagakure had many Wind and Water Release ninjutsu, so there weren't many restrictions in this aspect. But for Lightning Release, which Iwagakure lacked the most, Konoha was very strict this time.
Ishiro's mastery of Water Release was already quite good; the B-rank Water Release jutsus given by Konoha weren't of much help to his Water Release development. As for Wind Release, after about a month of effort, Ishiro still hadn't reached the point where he could cast even a single C-rank ninjutsu. So, these Wind Release ninjutsu, apart from increasing Ishiro's knowledge, would be of no further help in the short term.
The three A-rank ninjutsu, however, were quite good. One was Wind Release: Pressure Damage, which Ishiro couldn't learn. The remaining two were Water Release, which Ishiro studied very diligently, as they should be of considerable help to him in developing and upgrading his Water Release ninjutsu.
There had also been good news recently. Ishiro's disciple, Kajiyama Ri, had finally completed the development of his first ninjutsu. And quite miraculously, he had also recently achieved a breakthrough.
That's right, following Chiko Tomoe, Kajiyama Ri had also stepped onto the path towards becoming a Jōnin.
Ishiro only learned of this after returning to the Eastern Front encampment. Upon asking the reason, it turned out that Kajiyama Ri felt pressured seeing the rapid growth of Ishiro's three new disciples. Under this sense of urgency, Kajiyama Ri had miraculously broken through.
Thinking about it carefully, Ishiro felt relieved. Among Ishiro's six disciples over time, only Kajiyama Ri had passable strength during his Ninja Academy days. When the team originally had only three members, it was still manageable. Because ninjutsu-type ninjas were indeed at a disadvantage in the early stages, Kajiyama Ri could accept Kawakita being stronger than him at that point.
Chiko Tomoe's breakthrough was an accident, and Kajiyama Ri hadn't thought much about it. Besides, Chiko Tomoe's foundation was too poor; although she had broken through, it was unknown how long it would take for her to become a Jōnin.
But then Ishiro took on three more disciples, which made Kajiyama Ri feel a sense of urgency.
Especially after seeing Ogura Saki, who came from an ordinary class, also attempting to develop ninjutsu, Kajiyama Ri couldn't sit still anymore.
And what truly pushed Kajiyama Ri to complete his breakthrough was an insight Ogura Saki described when she once consulted him about ninjutsu development. At that time, it was no exaggeration to say that Kajiyama Ri had a moment of sudden enlightenment.
The person being consulted having a moment of sudden enlightenment while listening to someone else describe a problem – Kajiyama Ri became somewhat dazed.
By the time he came to his senses, more than an hour had passed, and Ogura Saki, who had originally been asking him questions, had long since been taken away by Chiko Tomoe. As someone who had been through it, Chiko Tomoe knew that Kajiyama Ri couldn't be disturbed at this moment.
Just like that, miraculously, Kajiyama Ri completed his breakthrough and also made qualitative progress in ninjutsu development. And Kajiyama Ri's foundation was far better than Chiko Tomoe's. Although he broke through so much later, if nothing unexpected happened, Kajiyama Ri should become a Jōnin earlier than Chiko Tomoe.
Ishiro felt somewhat ashamed. He had chosen Kajiyama Ri back then but hadn't been able to truly help him. Now, it even took Ogura Saki to enlighten him. He was being a somewhat incompetent teacher.
What made Ishiro even more embarrassed was that among Chiko Tomoe, Kajiyama Ri, and Kawakita, the only one who hadn't yet broken through, Kawakita, could no longer learn anything from Ishiro.
The path Kawakita walked was completely different from Ishiro's. There was too little guidance Ishiro could give Kawakita. When he had just graduated, Ishiro's half-baked knowledge of swordsmanship could still guide him a bit, but now, in terms of understanding swordsmanship alone, Kawakita had already surpassed Ishiro.
The only thing that gave Ishiro some comfort was that he had brought Kawakita to the Eastern Front encampment. Here, at least, there was Shiden, a swordsmanship expert, who would occasionally guide him.
Now Ishiro was hesitating whether to bring Chiko Tomoe and the other two back to the village.
He himself was returning to the village to learn S-rank ninjutsu, and his three new disciples would definitely go back with him. But his three older disciples were all already Chūnin; theoretically, Team One no longer existed. They should now each go their own way.
But Ishiro subconsciously felt they were still young, and it was too early for them to leave now. After all, in terms of age, they were indeed not very old.
In the end, it was Shiden who saw Ishiro's hesitation and persuaded him.
Ishiro disbanded Team One, brought all three back to the village, and let Ōnoki arrange their futures.
After returning to the village, Ishiro went to receive his S-rank ninjutsu. Ishiro had already looked at the S-rank ninjutsu catalog and had chosen the ninjutsu he wanted to learn in advance.
Originally, Ishiro had planned to learn the Super Added Weight Rock Technique. This ninjutsu, if used well, could suppress Tailed Beasts and was originally Ishiro's first choice. After all, Ishiro still didn't have a good method to deal with Tailed Beasts.
However, after Ikura's reminder, Ishiro changed his mind. When choosing ninjutsu, one should indeed consider space-time ninjutsu. Not just to deal with Minato Namikaze, but also to deal with Obito Uchiha, who might turn to the dark side in the future.
The ninjutsu Ishiro ultimately chose was a sensory ninjutsu. That's right, a sensory ninjutsu. However, unlike the sensory ninjutsu Ishiro had learned before, this S-rank sensory ninjutsu didn't require hand seals, didn't require deliberate sensing, and certainly didn't require touching fingers to the ground.
This S-rank ninjutsu could be described in one sentence: it was a passive skill.
Whenever there were chakra fluctuations, a ninja who knew this S-rank ninjutsu would naturally be able to detect them.
The Second Tsuchikage Mū in the original story knew this ninjutsu. When facing Mū, any sneak attack was useless. Even if Mū was fully preparing an S-rank ninjutsu like Dust Release: Detachment of the Primitive World Technique, he could still sense danger coming from behind.
Ishiro hoped to use this ninjutsu to determine whether the future Obito was in his dematerialized state.
Iwagakure's collection did not include space-time ninjutsu, and Ishiro couldn't obtain a method to truly counter space-time ninjutsu. The only thing Ishiro thought of was to use an S-rank sensory ninjutsu to judge the opponent's state.
To be honest, Ishiro wasn't sure if this ninjutsu would be effective against Obito, but Ishiro wanted to try.
It was still a long time before the Fourth Great Ninja War. Ishiro felt he would have opportunities to learn powerful offensive ninjutsu in the future. For now, learning this sensory ninjutsu was more practical.
Ōnoki frowned upon seeing Ishiro's choice, then thought of the method Ikura had mentioned that day for dealing with Minato Namikaze.
Ōnoki shook his head and said, "The strength of the Flying Thunder God technique lies in its speed. Even if you can sense the opponent's position, you won't have time to react. So, you don't need to specifically learn sensory ninjutsu to deal with the Flying Thunder God."
"My teacher, the Second Tsuchikage Mū, also learned this ninjutsu. He fought against the Second Hokage, who possessed the Flying Thunder God technique, and this ninjutsu wasn't of much help to him."
"Er~" Ishiro hadn't considered this. That's right, Mū and Tobirama Senju were both "Second Generation" Kage; it was normal for them to have fought.
After thinking for a moment, Ishiro still said, "I still want to learn this ninjutsu. I want to try and see if it's useful."
Ōnoki thought for a moment and said, "Well, try it then. Regardless of whether you can learn it or not, you can come back and learn a new one later. This ninjutsu provides too little help in combat."
Ishiro's eyes lit up. There was such a benefit? He quickly nodded vigorously.
The reason Ōnoki was so generous was, firstly, because he felt Ishiro was making a sacrifice by choosing this ninjutsu, a sacrifice for the village.
Secondly, because Ishiro's foundation was far inferior to Ikura's, the time Ishiro would need to complete his true transformation would also be much longer than Ikura's. Ishiro should have time to learn two S-rank ninjutsu.
"This ninjutsu is not easy to learn. It's said that Lord Second's mastery of it was also very accidental. If you feel you can't learn it, don't dwell on it. Don't waste too much time; come back early to learn a new ninjutsu."
Ishiro nodded. At this point, no matter what Ōnoki said, he wouldn't change his mind.
Ōnoki opened the sealing scroll to the corresponding position and released the seal. After confirming that Ishiro had completely memorized the ninjutsu, he resealed it. Then, he applied a secrecy sealing jutsu to Ishiro's mind before leaving the secret room with Ishiro.
