I was still standing in that lavish room with the cloak puddled at my feet like a bad metaphor for mystery, its edges still curling slightly as if around the imaginary outline of a person. My brain was spinning after everything that had just happened. 

The sound of heavy boots and shouting voices in the hallway snapped me back to reality. Guards. Lots of them. Their shouts grew closer, something about an intruder being spotted in the grounds. 

I surveyed my situation and quickly realized that I seemed to be in a rather compromising position. Standing in someone else's quarters. No witnesses. One strange pile of clothes with an arrow pierced inside.

Vorrak whispered, "If I had eyes, I'd be rolling them right now."

"Don't start," I hissed, darting my gaze around the room for a way out. I eyed the window. It was tall and questionably narrow, but I could squeeze myself through. It was preferable to being arrested for suspicious activity.
