Chapter 13 - Chapter Thirteen

 Achilles

Briseis has been gone for a week, and my world is not as bright. The darkness has settled into my life, and I often find myself wondering if she is doing okay.

Agamemnon's men fill the air with the sound of chopping wood and the banging of metal. I almost don't want to know what they are building.

My head hurts from pure annoyance; I feel like frustration is a part of my everyday life.

Odysseus approaches, wiping the sweat from his forehead. He has wood dust all over his clothing.

"Is Agamemnon trying to build an entirely new supply of weapons?" I roll my eyes. I don't even want to know what that evil bastard is up to.

"A horse," Odysseus says, raising an eyebrow.

"A horse?" I repeat, tilting my head to the side.

"A gift from the gods," he tells me, a huge smirk spreading across his face. What happens to Troy is my concern, and now more than ever, I can feel my heart skipping beats.

"An entrance into the city," I realize, feeling sweat forming in my palms. My feet start to pace as if they are walking themselves, no longer controlled by my brain.

"Yes, it's a creative plan."

"I need to warn her." I stand up, feeling my legs wobble beneath me.

"Achilles, don't interfere with fate," I see the worry etched on Odysseus's face.

I cross my arms over my chest. I feel my face turning red.

"Warning her could alter the events that the gods themselves set in motion. The men will lose their element of surprise. You know this will result in a longer conflict and more bloodshed. You know, defying fate could provoke the wrath of the gods. Just think of the misfortune not only upon us but upon all those we hold dear," he tells me.

Standing there, caught between love and destiny, I feel the unbearable weight of my choice pressing down on me. My heart pulls me towards Briseis, urging me to protect her at all costs, but my mind knows the dangers of defying the Gods. At this moment, courage is not enough. A strong wisdom is required to balance passion and the will of the gods. "Fine, let them build their horse, but I am getting her out of the city no matter the cost."
