Chapter 25 - OPERATION: NEWFANGLED

Summary: At The Newfangled Incorporation, a prestigious hospital in Y'Ruen, doctors and researchers work tirelessly to save lives, but with every life saved, another hangs in the balance. Evah, a skilled Originator, is drawn into the eerie happenings surrounding a series of mysterious disappearances at the hospital. As her curiosity deepens, she uncovers something far more sinister than she could have imagined. The more she learns, the greater the cost of knowing the truth becomes. But once the truth is in her hands, there's no turning back.

What happens when uncovering the truth could cost you everything you've worked for?

Saving a life is a noble duty. Doctors are the ones who carry that responsibility. But they are not alone. Law enforcement, scientists, professors, firefighters—even those we might despise—work relentlessly to save lives, often at great personal cost. And yet, there is an unsettling weight that comes with it. What happens when saving one life means ending another?

What would you choose?

The Newfangled Incorporation. A towering edifice in the second district of Y'Ruen, it houses the best hospital facilities in the country. The first five floors are dedicated to wards and basic medical services; the next five are reserved for presidential suites—luxurious accommodations for the rich and powerful. Beyond that, the upper floors belong to the research facility—the pinnacle of medical advancement in the world. It is a title fought for by the originators and doctors every day.

"I don't care how many lives you sacrifice. You need to perfect that!" A woman's voice from the Director's laboratory screamed through the empty halls, its desperation echoing off the walls. It was past midnight, and the building was eerily quiet. There shouldn't have been anyone around, but Evah, exhausted from a long day of work, couldn't help but freeze at the sound. That scream, raw and guttural, felt almost like a cry for help.

Evah winced, her heart pounding.

I don't care how many lives you sacrifice. The words clung to her like a shadow, their pain reverberating in her chest. The door to the Director's laboratory creaked open. Evah quickly melted into the shadows, her body tensing. She could hear the click of high heels against the polished floor, fast, frantic. She longed to peek, to see who it was, but stopped herself. If she was caught, her job could be at risk.

There, at the end of the hallway, a mirror reflected the Director's silhouette. He stood still, his posture stiff, bowing in front of someone unseen. The figure at the far end of the hallway was barely visible, her back turned, a figure in a dress.

Evah swallowed hard. What was going on?

After what seemed like an eternity, the Director straightened up, his back rigid, like a soldier at attention. The sound of heels faded as the woman disappeared, and the tension in the air finally eased. Evah slipped back to her floor, her head spinning.

Security was tight, but Evah slipped back into the lab without issue. People trusted her; she was dependable, the one they turned to when something needed to be done. But the truth was, her reputation wasn't built on skill alone—it was because she had no power to challenge anyone.

The next day, Evah tried to focus on the project At her desk, but her mind kept wandering.

"There's another missing person in building 3," a colleague whispered, catching her attention.

Her boyfriend muttered under his breath, annoyed. "Let them be. I don't get why they keep running."

Evah blinked, the words catching her off guard.

"Missing person?" she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper.

The group fell silent for a moment, clearly surprised by her sudden interest. Evah, usually a quiet observer, rarely engaged in these kinds of gossip sessions. They were used to her standing off to the side, lost in her own thoughts, but today...

A colleague near her, a newbie, piped up, trying to fill the silence. "They're all dying anyway. Maybe they just can't accept it." She shrugged nonchalantly.

Evah's brows furrowed. Building 3. She thought. Those were the wards for terminal patients, the ones with little time left. The rooms there were designed to feel like home, offering comfort for those facing their final days.

"Don't we have cameras everywhere to catch that?" Evah asked, her gaze shifting toward the group, her tone sharp and inquisitive.

There was an awkward pause. The newbies exchanged uncomfortable glances, clearly unnerved by her sudden participation.

"Conveniently, all the tapes from that time were corrupted," the newbie continued with a nervous laugh, trying to regain her composure. "Spooky, right? They say the building's haunted."

Her boyfriend rolled his eyes, trying to brush off the conversation. "Stop believing in that nonsense. You're a scientist, not a ghost hunter."

Evah's mind was already far away, her thoughts drifting back to the chilling words from the woman at the director's laboratory. I don't care how many lives you sacrifice. And that bowed figure—was that person connected to the disappearances?

Why were there missing tapes? If that were true, Evah thought, the hospital would be shut down in an instant. It's a national security issue.

That night, Evah stayed in the lab long after everyone had left. It wasn't unusual—she was known for her late nights. She had a reputation, and no one questioned her.

But tonight felt different. The usual focus was missing, replaced by an unease she couldn't shake. She pulled out her phone, connecting to a private IP shuffler, and began searching for any public news on the disappearances.

She typed in The Newfangled Inc. hospital disappearance.

A handful of links appeared—some repetitive, some unconfirmed, and none of them credible. Some missing people had been found in the hospital or had worked there. That's strange, Evah thought. The press was always chasing stories, but this felt... off.
