Humming a cheerful tune, Green led Ryuuske to a mailbox at a street corner.
She had her Ditto transform into a key and used it to open the mailbox. In this digital age, very few people still wrote letters, though the romantic act of letter-writing hadn't completely vanished from history. It had simply become far rarer than before. Even mailboxes, which postal workers once checked daily, were now only inspected once a week.
Tossing the disk into the mailbox was indeed a clever hiding spot—there was no way Team Rocket would ever find it.
"Your Ditto is really impressive," Ryuuske remarked. "Most Ditto can only mimic Pokémon, but yours can transform into all sorts of other objects too. That's pretty rare."
His praise was genuine. It was like Sabrina's "Mr. Mime"—many Pokémon possessed unique racial abilities, but not all members of their species could utilize them. Only under the guidance of an exceptional Trainer could a Pokémon fully unlock its potential.
The barrier created by Sabrina's Mr. Mime wasn't even a formal move—it was as natural to it as eating or drinking. Yet, even this simple ability allowed Mr. Mime to produce barriers with terrifying defensive and restraining power.
"Of course! My little Ditto isn't like those ordinary ones," Green boasted.
Her Ditto, with its jelly-like body, slithered into the keyhole and morphed into a key, unlocking the mailbox.
Green's Pokémon weren't primarily trained for combat. Each of them had unique and ingenious uses, allowing her to bring her wild ideas to life. This training style was likely a result of her past struggles.
In contrast, Red and Blue raised their Pokémon with balanced teams, prioritizing battle readiness—ensuring no glaring weaknesses but also no overwhelming strengths. Ryuuske, like Gym Leaders, specialized in a single type. Thanks to his "Dragon's Power," he could compensate for all the inherent weaknesses of Dragon-types, making his team exceptionally strong with no apparent flaws.
"Found it."
There weren't many letters inside the mailbox. Green quickly fished out a small disk, shut the mailbox door, and pulled Ryuuske into a nearby alley. From her high-tech bag, she pulled out a device that resembled a telescope.
"This is a machine I spent years and a fortune developing. It has a lot of practical functions."
"So, this is your tool for mischief, huh?" Ryuuske smirked.
"Hey, don't say it like that! It's cutting-edge technology!" Green giggled as she inserted the disk into the telescope-like device and put it on.
"Without this disk, Team Rocket has no hope of finding Mew in such a vast area. They've really lost on both fronts this time—launching a terrorist attack in Vermilion City, then sending so many people to Cerulean City, only to go home empty-handed."
"Do you have a grudge against Team Rocket?" Ryuuske asked curiously.
"Me? No way! Why would someone like me have anything to do with a terrorist organization?"
"Then why are you so fixated on thwarting them?"
"I'm not targeting them. It's just that Team Rocket's plans happen to overlap with what I've been investigating."
"What are you investigating?"
"..."
This time, Green didn't answer. It seemed to be a secret she wasn't willing to share.
Ryuuske shrugged. Though curious, he wasn't the type to pry. If she didn't want to talk about it, he wouldn't press her—it was likely tied to a past she'd rather forget.
"Got it! This psychic energy signature… it must be Mew!"
After a while, Green's face lit up with excitement.
"Where?"
"Northwest of Cerulean City. If I remember right, that's a plains area with a river running through it. The psychic fluctuations keep lingering there, so Mew must be staying there temporarily."
Green answered quickly.
"Perfect. We're currently north of Cerulean City, so we're not far. Let's find Mew before Team Rocket does."
Ryuuske grabbed Green's slender wrist and immediately broke into a run.
"Right! With your help, sweetie, we can catch Mew and sell it for a fortune! Hehe~"
"Hmph. Let's just hope you don't end up crying in fear before we even get close."
Ryuuske didn't bother explaining just how terrifying Mew could be. With Green navigating, he summoned Gible and rode on its back as it dashed forward.
...
As a land dragon, even in its unevolved state, Gabite was incredibly fast. Before long, Ryuuske and Green had left Cerulean City's populated areas and arrived at a distant plain in the outskirts.
"Is Mew here?"
Ryuuske gripped the Master Ball on his chest and turned to Green.
After fiddling with the telescope-like device again, Green nodded.
"Yep, it's definitely nearby. But Mew moves really fast—it's darting around unpredictably within a four-kilometer radius. At this speed, catching it will be tough."
Green frowned. Mew's teleportation made things far more complicated than she'd anticipated.
"You're sure it's within four kilometers? That's good enough for me..."
Ryuuske smirked and reached out telepathically to Mewtwo.
[Can you sense Mew's location?]
[That girl isn't lying. Mew is nearby—its energy is strong. I can feel it!]
[In that case…]
"Then it's your turn, Mewtwo. Find Mew and defeat it!"
Ryuuske's eyes sharpened. Without hesitation, he yanked the Master Ball from his neck and tossed it downward. A burst of smoke later, Mewtwo materialized.
"Huh?"
Even as a human, Green could sense the overwhelming power radiating from this unfamiliar Pokémon. Just standing near it made the air feel distorted, almost suffocating. She discreetly pulled out the Pokédex she'd stolen from Professor Oak and checked the entry.
"Mewtwo. A genetically engineered Pokémon created from Mew's DNA. Its combat abilities have been enhanced to their limits, making it an extremely violent Pokémon born solely for battle."
Reading the description, Green finally understood.
Being sharp-witted, she quickly deduced that Mewtwo must have been created by Team Rocket and somehow obtained by Ryuuske. That also explained why Team Rocket was so desperate to find Mew—they probably wanted to create another Mewtwo.
Recalling the files on Ryuuske she'd found in Team Rocket's base, Green finally grasped why they were so fixated on tracking him down.
[Mew's location confirmed, Ryuuske.]
[Good. Let's move out!]
Ryuuske unwrapped the bandages on his left arm, as though lifting a seal, revealing a limb etched with what looked like countless demonic markings. For now, Mewtwo's cells hadn't fully eroded his body, so the pain was still manageable.
"Our deal is done. You're free to go, Green. Take care."
Without another glance at her, Ryuuske gave Mewtwo a command. A terrifying surge of psychic energy erupted from Mewtwo as it shot into the sky like an arrow, carrying Ryuuske with it.
Green shielded her face from the dust kicked up by Mewtwo's takeoff. Her eyes sparkled mischievously as she grinned.
"Hehe~ You promised we'd catch Mew together! You can't just ditch me like this! Jigglypuff, let's follow them! Mewtwo and Mew—these might be the only two of their kind in the world! No way I'm missing this!"
She put the telescope back on, using it to track Mew's energy and follow Ryuuske and Mewtwo's trail.
