Chapter 9 - The Escape

Rory looked at me with killing intent, like I was some kind of beast. Her long blade was pointed at me, ready to strike again.

I have to get away from here, forget about the monster that's controlling them, we can't even defeat Rory. She's the monster here now! One strike from her and I'm as good as dead.

She swung her long blade again, but I kept dodging her attempts at murder. I'm barely able to keep up with her speed, yet she seems to be only getting faster. How am I supposed to put someone to sleep like this???

She took her blade positioning it over her head, and struck down like thunder. In a moment everything went dark, all you could hear was a loud thud.

It was over, I was dead, yet when I opened my eyes, in front of me stood the red-haired jerk protecting me.

"I've got this kid, I'll deal with my sister. You go find Iris and get her to safety." He said with a reassuring voice.

Even if I didn't like this guy, I couldn't help but believe in his words. I got up and kept running towards the shack's dim light.

It felt eerie, something was definitely wrong in there. I ran inside the old shack, the door swung open. Ryan was laying on the wooden floor knocked out, yet nobody was in the room.

I cautiously went up to him, checking his vitals. He seemed to be alright, but he seemed to have been knocked out by something. I looked next to him, the cloth with the sedative layed there.

I picked it up and suddenly heard a voice from behind me. It was the same welcoming and warm voice I knew. It was the same voice that greeted me when I first came here.

Iris stood behind me, breathing down my neck "Well, what do we have here?"

Her nails dug into my neck, and a small drop of blood dripped down it. It felt as if she could rip my neck off my body. I thought Rory was the strongest, but Iris is so much more dangerous.

She takes a cloth from the ground, bringing it up to my nose... to hell with this, I'm not going to let it end here!

I struggled as if there was no tomorrow, thrashed, pushed, and fought. All of it she perfectly moved out of the way and still kept a firm grip on me.

It wasn't still over... I just have to struggle till Klein comes and saves me. He should be here soon...

The door opened up with force from a fierce kick. The person who came in made my blood turn cold.

Dark red eyes looked at me from the dark, yet showed no other expression. Bloodlust seething from each of her pores, aimed all at me.

Rory stood there at the doorway, the cold wind rushing through the open door. Rory just stood there staring at me with her weapon in hand, seemingly ready to take me out if I ran away.

Klein had failed and, from the looks of it, might have lost his life. My only hope has diminished, it really is over...

Yet a sudden figure caught my eye, a dark shadowy figure outside moved. I looked closer at him, it was hard to make out who they were, but I could never mistake that annoying red-haired jerk. He stumbled around quietly, right behind Rory.

He looked battered and bruised in a half-conscious state, yet he seemed to be still able to stand up. He sneaked up on Rory, being right behind her. In an instant without even letting her gasp, she was pulled to the shadows in a chokehold.

The nails dug into me more, Iris not even noticing Rory disappearing. There was an off-putting feeling about her, yet there wasn't anything to think about. I have to get away from her grip...

Seeing as I wasn't getting affected by the drug, she placed a hand on my head, gentle yet firm. She had a dark smile on her face, "This will only hurt for a second..."

I felt danger, my body reacted to it without me controlling it. Right as she was ready to snap my neck, she loosened her grip for a second, yet in that second, I managed to jump back, headbutting her in the face. She started to stumble back, tsken by the suprise.

I didn't even stop to look back, as soon as I got up, I rushed towards the shack's entrance till I heard a shriek that made me falter. The shriek was inhumane, which reverberated all around the forest, it felt ear-piercing.

Ugh, everything felt like it was twisting around... I can't tell which direction is which, I can barely even stand up. The shriek made me disoriented, I felt paralysed, barely even staying conscious.

'Agh fuck it, I have to keep going... it doesn't matter. Even if I can barely keep myself upright, I'm still conscious.'

I bite my lip, holding the nausea in. Blood dripped down my lip. I wasn't the only one who was disoriented, it seemed everyone else was affected.

I ran towards Iris, seeing the opportunity, I took the cloth from her hand as she laid helpless on the ground and brought it towards Iris's face. It didn't take her long till she fell asleep, it was over.

All we have to do is get out of here carrying them all... I look over at Ryan, who seems to have gotten knocked out. I took a cloth and wrapped it around his nose like a bandana and nudged him awake. It took a while, but he slowly woke up confused, yet he understood the situation quickly.

He took Iris on his back carrying her, we both headed outside back into the fog of spores looking for Klein. Through the fog, we saw someone, yet it wasn't who we had hoped to see. Rory walked towards us, dragging Klein's limp body across the ground.

'You must be kidding me, what kind of monster is she to wake up after all of that?'

Right behind her, the trees swayed unnaturally, making a huge unsettling emptiness between them. The trees split, got stomped and crunched under the monster's legs. Something in me screamed to get away, Rory wasn't the only problem now.

We ran as fast as we could, the creature's steps shaking the ground itself. The steps got louder and louder with each passing second we were in that forest.

My lungs felt like they were burning, it got harder and harder to breathe. Rory chased us dragging Klein across the dirt unconscious with the monster following us.

The fog started to get clearer, I felt hopeful, like we could make it out of the creature's territory. Dim sunlight touched my dirty pale skin, and I felt the warmth of the sun. It felt like it was ages since the sun enveloped me in its warmth, yet it was only a few hours.

The sound of ground cracking behind us became more intense with each passing second the monster got closer.

A shriek could be heard that echoed throughout the foggy forest.

The creature towered over the forest, bending trees like it was nothing. I felt immensely small compared to this creature.

I wasn't able to see him, yet you could tell that its there.

I jumped out of the forest, Rory still chasing us down dragging poor Klein across the ground. She followed out of the forest, everything becoming ever so brighter. The creature's steps stopped just right where the forest ended. It seemed that it wasn't interested in hunting outside of its territory.

We escaped alive.
