"You know what," Amelia said suddenly, her tone light but her eyes sharp with curiosity. "Why don't you tell us how you met my son? I think we could all use a little change of subject." Her lips curved into a warm, inviting smile, and she leaned forward slightly in her chair, clearly eager to hear the story straight from Ava's mouth.
For a second, everything around Ava seemed to still. The sound of clinking cutlery, muffled conversations, even the ticking of the wall clock faded into the background.
She felt the heat creep up her neck as all eyes subtly shifted to her, and despite the welcoming tone in Amelia's voice, Ava felt her stomach twist in a knot.
