Chapter 23 - Shambler hunting

Huek Jin sat down mulling over Ripperborn's words.

I will return.

He let out a listless sigh as he stared into a distance, "I am so sorry Min-ji," he muttered, lowering his gaze, "I do not mean to drag you into this."

He tilted his head backwards, his eyes now on the sky.

"If I want her to be safe, I would have to confront him myself," he balled his hands into a fist.

"I will not stand and watch her being threatened," he rose to his feet, then stretched a little.

"Let us get this thing straight," he whipped out his katana.

"Huek Jin?" He heard a soft voice behind him.

He looked over his shoulders to see Min-ji slowly making her way towards him.

"Ah, Min-ji. What is the matter?" He stretched out his right hand.

She got closer, then took his hand, "If you want to take him down, I will do it with you."

He narrowed his eyes, "What are you talking about?"

She shook her head slightly, giving him a knowing smile.

 *Ripperborn."

He firmly shook his head, "No way. I do not want anything happening to you."

She chuckled, "Why are you worrying?"

"Min-ji.. he is too strong. You might end up getting hurt."

She shrugged her shoulders, "If I am able to defeat him, I would level up big time, which would aid in my world building. I'm not sitting around and waiting the system to bring up daily tasks anymore."

He sighed deeply, "He is after you, but.. I want to make him focus on me so he can leave you alone."

She patted his chest, "We've got a world to build, and these things keep getting in the way. So we've got to eliminate them together right?"

He slightly lowered his head, "Of course. Of course."

"We just need to find a way to activate the portal or something," he rubbed his chin thoughtfully.

"I don't think we can do that," she squatted, "We have to find another group of shamblers I suppose."

Huek Jin pushed his hand back into his hair, "Hmm. Then let us go shambler hunting then."

He slid his katana back into its sheath.

Soo Min-ji looked away taking in a deep breath.

'Everyday I realize how huge this responsibility of mine keep getting.'

He took her by the hand, "Come on, we should get going now."

"We should start setting up markers here, and there. It's hard to just remember where last we did a particular task," she scratched her head.

"That will be taken care of. I would set up some stone markers soon," he quickened his pace.

"Whoa! You should slow down a bit!" She gasped, trying to match up with his pace.

 "The faster, the better."

[Beep! Fleshwalker detected!]

Soo Min-ji immediately snapped her head to the side. A fleshwalker was running in their direction.

"Hm, let me take care of that," she tugged at his hand to loosen his grip.

As soon as it came closer, she punched it hard- twice.

"Bitch," she cursed under breath as soon as it vanished into thin air.

[Leveled up!]

"Brace yourself, we might run into any group of zombies soon."

Soon enough, they heard groans in a distance.

"Didn't expect those motherfuckers would be up so close," she rolled her eyes.

"They are everywhere. We just have to watch out for them," he readied himself, cracking his fingers.

"Oh yes, watch out for Crystal cores. They would be important later," she cleared her throat.

"Noted."

The shamblers sighted them in a distance, and sprang into action.

"Ready?"

"As ready as I will ever be," an unbothered smirk teased the corner of her lips.

Huek Jin halted to a stop, finding his stance in the sand.

"Find your stance now. We do not want you being knocked out by any of them," he smacked his lips.

"Until I give the signal, do not attack alright?"

"Ayye captain!" She grinned sheepishly.

Huek Jin observed the shamblers approaching them. They weren't so much in number, about thirty of them. So it was easy to tap them out quickly.

"We just need five of them," he mumbled.

Mentally, he picked out the five that deemed fit for the job.

"Now!"

Following his command, Min-ji rushed at them, quickly whipping out her crescent blade.

"You can kill them all, I will do the picking," he whispered in her ears before running ahead of her.

CRACK!

She kicked one of them in the head making it break its head, then with one swipe of her blade, she cut it open.

Another one lunged at her, and she did the same thing she had done with the first.

Huek Jin on the other hand, had already taken down about five of them in one blow.

With one powerful kick, he sent one of them flying back, then it vanished into thin air.

"They are getting weaker by the day, hmm," he shook his head.

Swerving down, he brushed off three of them off their feet, slicing them open in the process.

"Tsk," he stepped back as black blood spewed, smearing all over his Katana.

CRACK! SLICE!

The heads kept rolling, then vanished into thin air, thinning the numbers to just eight of them. He had still kept those five alive, so he tried all he could to avoid cutting them open.

"That leaves the three of you," he chuckled darkly, sweeping their heads of with an arc of his katana.

"Ha!" He raised his katana in triumph.

"What are supposed to do with these five now?"

"I got this," he winked at her, immediately fishing out a long rope from his pockets.

Before they could react, he had already bound the last five shambler together with his strong rope.

"This should keep them in place," he said, a satisfied smirk was resting on his face.

"Well done," Soo Min-ji came closer, then gave him a high five.

"So, how do we get them to perform their spell?"

He stooped to a squatting position, then began writing something on the ground.

"What are you doing?" She peeked at the strange words he was writing on the ground.

"Shhh!"

She stopped talking, crossed her arms over her chest watching him keenly.

Rays of light began to sleep out of the words as he kept writing. The rays soon metamorphosed into a strong beam of light, as it rounded the shamblers.

"What did you do?" She stepped back.

"Just a little magic," he got up, and also stepped back waiting for the light to perform its magic.

The beam of light exploded like fireworks on the shamblers- then there was a loud screeching sound, a bang, then everywhere went silent. Furthermore, the light had disappeared.

Soo Min-ji turned back to look at the shamblers who now had droopy eyes, their jaws ajar as though they had been cast into a spell.

"This is it. It has been done."
