Chapter 37 - Impunity

Since he was little, Jimmy had been very observant, and with just a few glances, he could tell that George was being rescued from the brink of death.

It was completely inappropriate for children their age to wait outside the intensive care unit. That's why, after greeting and comforting his friends' mother, Jimmy headed to the information desk.

If he remembered correctly, George's father should be dealing with heart issues for many obvious reasons—reasons Jimmy didn't want to waste time thinking about.

To clear up any doubts, Jimmy wanted to check the other party's medical records to see if there was a way to help prevent future problems. After all, the Cooper family had welcomed him into their home and given him plenty of love.

Besides, from a personal standpoint, Jimmy also believed George was a genuinely good person.

When he reached the information desk, there was a young nurse on duty. After Jimmy explained his purpose, he easily obtained George's medical records.

Looking over the numbers on the chart, Jimmy could initially see that George's blood pressure, blood sugar, and blood lipid levels were a bit high. As for other issues, they were difficult for a non-professional to fully understand.

"Excuse me, may I ask about the specific cause of the illness listed in these medical records?" Jimmy had no choice but to turn to the young nurse behind the counter for help.

The young nurse had already noticed Jimmy—a boy who seemed surprisingly mature. Hearing his question, she eagerly stepped closer, took the medical file, studied it carefully, and said, "Mr. George's illness is an acquired heart disease. There are two main causes, look..."

She leaned in gently, pointed to a long paragraph filled with professional terminology in the medical record, and explained, "One is caused by mental stress. Prolonged mental stress, anxiety, and irritability increase the risk of heart disease."

"The other could be due to unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as eating foods high in fat, salt, and sugar. Also, lack of exercise, alcoholism, drug use, obesity, and other factors cause metabolic imbalances and affect the normal functioning of blood vessels."

Considering George's lazy personality and alcoholism, Jimmy quickly determined that the second cause was the most likely.

Now that he had identified the root of the problem, better lifestyle control in the future should help his recovery.

"Thank you for your help." Jimmy took the medical records and was about to leave.

"Wait..." the nurse called out, just to be sure, and asked, "Are you Mr. Cooper's son?"

"I'm his son, George Jr.," Jimmy had no choice but to lie at that moment.

When he returned to the entrance of the intensive care unit, George's surgery had already been completed successfully, and a doctor was explaining the situation to Mary.

George was out of danger and could even be discharged later that night if he wanted to.

The Cooper family, upon hearing the good news, embraced each other in excitement.

"Where did you go just now?" Connie asked casually, noticing Jimmy slipping some papers into his jacket.

Without waiting for Jimmy's answer, she looked around and added, "Where's your dog?"

"Oh, he went home... By the way, is there any news?" Jimmy's calm attitude made Connie feel uneasy. She really thought the whole thing about a flying dog had just been a dream.

"George is fine now."

George Jr. and Missy also came over and hugged Jimmy as if he were family.

"Alright, let's go in and see George," Mary said, wiping the tears from the corners of her eyes, composing herself, and suggesting they go in.

Just as the family was about to enter the room to visit George, Missy suddenly looked around and asked, "Where's Sheldon?"

Mary and Connie then realized that in their worry over George, they had completely lost track of where little Sheldon had gone.

Just as they were about to start worrying again, Jimmy said, "I know where Sheldon is. You go ahead and visit George—I'll bring him back."

As he walked away, he touched his arms where he had been hugged earlier and silently promised himself he would do everything he could to save George's life—because if George didn't take care of himself, he would likely die of a heart attack.
