"What are you talking about?" Jess asks his voice unsteady, uncertain.
The old woman gives him a patient, almost sorrowful look. "This power has always been inside you," she says gently. "But no one ever told you… no one guided you. That's why you never new about it. The moon goddess knew that the Alphas would be all over you when they find out, that's why she gave it to you, born with it."
Jess takes a step back, shaking his head, his brow furrowed. "I don't… I don't understand."
"You will," she says. "By now you must've noticed that you are different from just any other male wolf. The way your body changed. The way you could carry life. That's not something just any male wolf can do. The child you car..."
Jess looks away, arms tightening around himself. "Please don't," he whispers, voice barely audible.
The ache that laces through those two words is thick, heavy. He doesn't want to hear it. He doesn't want to be reminded of what he lost.
