Chapter 24 - Military reform

The battle against two hundred and fifty thousand men of the Blackthorn empire was finished almost as soon as it started. The citizens in Patagonia did not even deviate from their regular activities due to the failed siege, so work continued as usual.

Three days later, soldiers of Terra received new information;

Firstly there was going to be a reorganization of military ranks, for non commissioned officers, there was the rank of private, corporal , sergeant and the regiment sergeant major (RSM) in succession.

For the commissioned officers, there was the lieutenant, captain, Colonel, lieutenant general and general.

Each of the ranks came with their respective insignia and requirements.

Privates had no insignia, it was the first rank a recruit is ushered into when he enters the army.

The corporals insignia was an upside down V and soldiers could receive this rank based on recommendations from a senior officer for exceptional behavior. Recruits could also get the rank if they perform extremely well during training.

The sergeants insignia was three v shaped stripes reserved for soldiers who had shown exceptional leadership skills and bravery. Sergeants were in charge of their respective ten man teams. They were responsible for training, weapons check and overall discipline of their men.

The regiment sergeant major or RSM insignias was an eagle surrounded by two olive branches. Their work was to act as a liason between the regular soldiers and the officers. They were the most senior of the non commissioned officers so they also assisted and guided new commissioned officers in their duties.

For the commissioned officers, first was the lieutenant whose insignia was a star symbol attached to their collers for the combat uniform or their shoulder pads on their dress uniform. They were in charge of leading platoons, this included training. They are selected from cadets who had completed officers training courses . They were also reserved for RSMs and some sergeants who have proven themselves beyond any doubt.

There was the captain whose insignia was two stars, they were mainly overseers but could lead battalions or corps or assist senior officers.

The Colonels insignia was an eagle and a star on his collar or shoulder pads, they were brigade commanders who led 5000+ men.

The lieutenant general has an insignia of an eagle and two stars and led a division of fifteen thousand men .

Finally the general with an insignia of an eagle and a crossed sword was incharge of a field army that numbered up to one hundred thousand soldiers.

The military also had different corps that made up their ranks, for example, the infantry corps, artillery corps, education corps, engineering/mechanical corps, medical corps, signal and reconnaissance corps and the military police.

The infantry teams ten led by a sergeant was comprised of a breacher who was armed with a shot gun, pistol or revolver, grenades and was an explosive expert. There was the gunner who was armed with a general purpose machine gun and his assistant who helped with changing barrels and carrying extra bullet magazines. There was also the marksman who usually carried a bolt action rifle or a sniper and was responsible for eliminating targets outside the effective range of other weapons.

The rest on the team carried their respective riffles, submachine guns and pistols.

This was the same for the platoon except that each platoon of fifty soldiers was to have a heavy machine gun to be transported by carriage till a better vehicle was provided.

Ceasers thought process behind this was to make sure that the army was self sufficient and capable of acting independently.

Then there was the duties, responsibility, code of conduct and rewards of the soldiers.

A soldier was expected above all things to follow orders, they were expected to defend the nation from any threat foreign or domestic.

A soldier was to maintain a clean and well maintained uniform at all times, this was to keep them distinguished from regular citizens. This could be done using a charcoal iron that was introduced by Ceaser to iron out wrinkles from their uniforms after washing.

A soldier must not steal or pillage unless given the order. A soldier must never be involved in sexual assault or rape for any reason or under any circumstances.

While following orders, a soldier must learn how to adapt to any situation and act in a way that preserves both his life and that of his teammates while performing their tasks.

Then there was the combat kit of the soldiers, while in active combat a soldier had his standard uniform on his head he would wear a stanheilm helmet, to protect his upper body they wore a quenched blackened steel cuirass which was mostly breastplates and backplates that protected their torso. They were also armed with their rifles and for now they were to have four extra magazines and also a backup weapon which at this moment was a dagger and a revolver.

When in their dress uniforms , they discard the rifles and are armed with only a revolver.

Soldiers were also meant to have a standard education, this meant that soldiers were required to be able to read, write and perform simple calculations. The higher the personnels education, the higher the chance of getting promotions.

Women were now be able to get recruited into the army, but at the moment their roles were going to be support and administrative roles.

This news especially the new heirachial structure in the army unlocked a new zeal in the soldiers, the new ranks each came with benefits and a promise of recognition.

Humans were inherently greedy and this news channelled the greed into something useful and productive.

This news also has an underlying meaning, this meant that soon , Terra would forsake their defense tactics and begin a campaign outside the borders of Patagonia.

The people who understood the situation did the only logical thing which was to train, learn how to handle their new weapons.

The shooting ranges in the military fort from that moment saw an increase in personnel whi had came to hone their craft .
