Chapter 31 - A Batch of Eggs

Jenny's efficiency was unmatched—early the next morning, Carver's daycare received a delivery of Pokémon eggs from the Hoenn League.

Jenny helped Carver move the eggs to the second-floor incubation room, where he had installed fifty nest-like incubators resembling bird Pokémon nests during renovations. Half of them were now in use.

The Hoenn League had sent a total of 20 Pokémon eggs.

As they settled the eggs into the incubators, Jenny said, "That's all the suitable Pokémon eggs they could provide for now. But they're aware of your situation. If more eggs become available, they'll send another batch."

"Thanks a lot, Sister." After thinking it over last night, Carver felt that calling her "Miss Jenny" was too formal, but "sister" didn't quite suit their relationship either. "Sister" felt like the best compromise.

Jenny paused briefly, then smiled warmly. "If you ever need anything, just let me know."

She was clearly in a very good mood today.

Carver smiled, then offered, "I just reopened recently and don't have much to thank you with, but if you don't mind, why don't you stay for lunch today?"

Jenny was surprised. "You can cook?"

"Just learned." Carver's face remained calm.

Jenny's smile brightened even more. "In that case, I'm really looking forward to it."

Yesterday afternoon, Carver had gone to Autumnleaf Town with Bewear to buy some fresh ingredients—just in time for this.

At noon, Carver cooked a simple meal and sat at the table with Bewear, Growlithe, and Jenny.

Seeing the dishes on the table, Jenny was impressed. "Looks like your talent extends beyond Pokémon breeding—you're gifted in cooking too!"

Carver replied, "I'll be living on my own from now on, not just for myself, but also for Bewear and Growlithe."

Jenny nodded in understanding and tried a piece of mushroom—it was surprisingly tasty.

Then she looked at Carver and asked, "I've always wanted to ask—why didn't you return to the family back then?"

Surely, the Jenny family would've been a better place than an orphanage?

Carver: "…"

He honestly didn't know what the original owner of his body had been thinking.

After a brief silence, Carver said, "Because this is where I grew up. My parents were here too… I just couldn't leave."

In his inherited memories, the original Carver often returned to visit the daycare—it made sense he was emotionally attached to the place.

Jenny nodded without pressing further.

The two chatted over lunch, and afterward, she said her goodbyes and rode her motorcycle back to Autumnleaf Town.

Once she left, Carver headed to the incubator room and scanned the twenty Pokémon eggs.

One by one, information surfaced in his mind.

[Lotad's Egg: Can hatch into a Water/Grass-type Pokémon, Lotad.]

Health Status: Healthy

Father: Ludicolo (Elite rank)

Mother: Tropius (Elite rank)

"Lotad… both parents are elite rank…"

Carver continued checking.

Skitty's Egg, Poochyena's Egg, Zigzagoon's Egg, Wurmple's Egg, Trapinch's Egg, Cacnea's Egg, Chimecho's Egg, Bonsly's Egg, Swablu's Egg…

All fairly common Pokémon, many with duplicates. The highest parental strength among them was Gym Leader-level. None had Elite Four-tier lineage.

Still, for wild Pokémon, that wasn't bad.

Carver took note of their varied incubation times—some would hatch in just a few days, others in up to two months.

For country kids around Autumnleaf Town, these were excellent starter Pokémon.

Much better than risking their lives trying to catch wild ones.

Now that the eggs had arrived, Carver immediately thought of the boy who had previously asked to buy a starter Pokémon egg—Ye, who loved Dragon-types.

Though there were no Dratini or Dragonair in the daycare, one of the eggs in this batch did contain a Pokémon with a future Dragon typing:

Trapinch.

While Trapinch was only a Ground-type in its first stage, it would become Dragon-type after evolving into Vibrava and Flygon.

Not exactly a traditional Dragon—but close enough.

Carver pulled out Ye's contact information and used the newly installed phone to call him.

When Ye heard that the daycare finally had some unhatched Pokémon eggs, he immediately jumped on his bike and raced over from Autumnleaf Town.

"Boss!"

The boy burst through the daycare doors, full of excitement.

Carver was behind the counter grooming Growlithe.

Ye immediately noticed the big changes—last time, the daycare had only had Carver, Bewear, and Growlithe. Now it was buzzing with activity.

So many Clefairy!

Some were lounging on the sofas, others sweeping the floor, and a few were tending to the flowerpots by the windows.

So many Clefairy! Ye was stunned. Were all of these Carver's Pokémon?

"Long time no see, Ye. We just got a batch of Pokémon eggs this morning. Come take a look—maybe one of them is just right for you," Carver said, pausing his grooming.

"I want to see them!" Ye exclaimed.

Carver nodded and led him to the incubation room. As soon as they entered, Ye gasped at the sight of twenty eggs neatly nestled in their incubators.

"Wow! So many!"

Too many to go through one by one, so Carver asked, "Do you have any preferences for your starter?"

"I want a Dragon-type! I really love Dragon Pokémon—they're so cool!" Ye said eagerly.

Carver thought to himself, Just as I expected.

He led Ye to the Trapinch egg and said, "Out of this batch, this is the only one that fits your request."
