Chapter 85 - Chapter 85: The Penultimate Guardian (Hard)

The Iron Resolve party, battered but resolute after navigating the treacherous chasm and defeating the Sunken Reliquary Sentinel mini-boss in the previous chamber, paused to recover. Lyra, the healer, distributed her remaining mana-efficient heals, topping off health bars. Elara, the Mage, sipped carefully from a mana potion, her reserves nearly depleted from the constant spellcasting and the demands of the Hard Mode encounters. Finn, the Rogue, reapplied poisons to his new Rare daggers, his expression grimly focused. Valerius, their tank, checked the durability of his shield, which bore fresh scars from the Sentinel's attacks. Drake stood calmly, his [Initiate's Twin Blades] held loosely, his [Perfect Recall] already processing the layout of the previous chambers and anticipating what lay ahead.

"Alright team," Valerius said, his voice a low rumble. "According to the Normal mode layout, and Drake's confirmation from his earlier run, the chamber of the Guardian of the Deep should be just through this next flooded passage. On Normal, he was a bit of a joke once Drake got going. But this is Hard Mode. Expect him to be significantly buffed – more health, harder hits, and almost certainly new mechanics or a new phase. We beat the Sludge Lord by overpowering its regen; this guy might have something different. Stay sharp. Call out everything."

They proceeded through a short, partially submerged tunnel, emerging into the vast, circular final chamber they remembered from their Normal mode clear. In the center, the colossal, barnacle-encrusted Alvari construct, the Guardian of the Deep (Level 26 Hard Mode Boss), slowly began to rise from the murky pool, its single massive eye glowing with a far more intense and malevolent blue light than before. Its metallic chassis seemed thicker, more reinforced, and faint arcs of volatile aquatic energy crackled across its surface. It was clearly a much more formidable opponent.

"Engaging!" Valerius bellowed, his voice a challenge as he charged forward, shield raised, to intercept the Guardian before it could target the more vulnerable members of the party. The Guardian responded with a deafening, metallic roar and a sweeping blow from one of its massive pincer-like arms.

Valerius met the blow with his shield. << Valerius - Blocked! HP: 80%/100% >> The impact visibly staggered him, a much harder hit than on Normal. "He hits like a damn tidal wave!" Valerius grunted, planting his feet. "Mage, Rogue, find your positions! Lyra, keep those heals coming!"

Drake moved in, a blur of motion, his twin blades already beginning their deadly dance. He initiated his [Basic Attack Combo R/L] (R-100%/L-84%) as the Guardian turned its attention briefly towards him after Valerius re-established aggro with a taunt. His Right Hand struck the Guardian's leg for 370 damage. His Left Hand followed for 195 damage. [Relentless Assault] stacks began their rapid climb.

The Guardian's first [Crushing Depth] AoE was telegraphed by the familiar expanding dark circle on the floor, but it spread with alarming speed and covered a significantly wider area than on Normal. "AoE! Spread out, fast!" Elara yelled, already blinking to a safer distance. Drake used a quick, controlled [Blade Dance] not primarily for damage, but for its slight forward momentum and spin to carry him just outside the expanding radius. Finn tumbled away, narrowly avoiding it. Valerius had to use a defensive cooldown to mitigate the damage as he was too slow to fully exit.

The fight quickly fell into a demanding rhythm. The Guardian's basic melee attacks were brutal, forcing Lyra to focus intense healing on Valerius. Its [Crushing Depth] AoE came frequently, forcing constant repositioning and making sustained DPS difficult for the ranged attackers. Drake, however, thrived in the chaos. His [Parry] was put to the test repeatedly as he stayed in melee range, weaving around the Guardian's attacks.

When the Guardian reached 75% health, a new mechanic emerged that wasn't present on Normal. It slammed its fists into the ground, and the entire chamber floor became electrified for several seconds, dealing heavy ticking nature damage to anyone standing on it. << Guardian of the Deep activates [Charged Substrate]! Floor is electrified! >> "Floor! Get off the floor!" Valerius shouted, as several small, previously unnoticed stone plinths rose from the murky water at the edges of the arena – the only safe spots. The party scrambled onto the plinths, a chaotic moment where Drake used another [Blade Dance] to swiftly move to an unoccupied one. During this phase, the Guardian was immobile but also took significantly reduced damage. They had to wait it out, taking potshots when possible.

Once the [Charged Substrate] faded, they re-engaged. At 50% health, the Guardian roared and summoned adds – not the weak Sludge Minions from Normal, but four Armored Deep Claws (Level 24 Hard Mode Adds), crab-like constructs with high armor and a nasty pincer attack that could apply a bleeding DoT. "Adds! DPS, switch to adds, burn them down fast!" Valerius commanded, skillfully kiting the main boss while trying to pick up aggro on the Claws.

This was where Drake's AoE, [Blade Dance], though still only 83% SCR, became crucial for control, even if its damage wasn't as high as his single-target output. He spun through the adds, staggering them and allowing Elara and Finn to focus them down one by one. His own [Relentless Assault] stacks, built high on the boss, allowed him to contribute significant cleave damage to the adds as well.

The fight was a tough, coordinated effort. They utilized the knowledge from their Normal run regarding the basic attack timings and the [Crushing Depth] AoE, but the new Hard Mode mechanics – the electrified floor, the tougher adds, and the Guardian's significantly increased health and damage – pushed them to their limits. Drake's consistent high damage, his ability to perfectly defend against many of the Guardian's direct attacks with his Parry (taking reduced damage but surviving), and his quick takedown of adds were critical. Lyra performed heroically, her mana bar a constant yo-yo.

Finally, after an exhausting fifteen-minute battle, with cooldowns used, mana potions chugged, and several near-death experiences for Valerius and Finn, they pushed the Guardian of the Deep into its final few percentage points of health. It let out one last defiant roar, attempting a final, desperate [Crushing Depth]. The party dodged cleanly. Drake surged forward, [Relentless Assault] at maximum stacks, his [Initiate's Twin Blades] a silver inferno. A final, devastating [Twin Fang Strike], empowered by [Echoing Steel], landed squarely on the Guardian's glowing eye. << Critical Hit! Damage Dealt: 720! >>

The light in the Guardian's eye flickered and died. The colossal construct shuddered, then slumped forward with a deafening crash, its form becoming inert, partially submerged in the murky water. << Guardian of the Deep (Hard Mode) Defeated! >> << Party EXP Gained: +25000! >>

A wave of triumphant shouts and relieved laughter filled the chamber. "YES! We got him!" Finn yelled, collapsing onto a nearby plinth. Elara leaned against her staff, panting. "That... was significantly harder than Normal." Lyra just sank to her knees, visibly drained but smiling. Valerius let out a huge whoop. "Hah! Knew we could do it! Excellent work, Iron Resolve! That's the Sunken Reliquary Hard Mode cleared!" He walked over and clapped Drake on the shoulder. "Seriously, Drake, your damage is just unreal. And those parries saved my hide more than once."

A large, ornate treasure chest, similar to the one from their Normal clear but with a more pronounced magical glow, shimmered into existence where the Guardian had fallen. The party gathered around it, the fatigue momentarily forgotten in the thrill of victory. They had faced what they believed to be the final, toughest challenge of the Sunken Reliquary on Hard Mode, and through skill, coordination, and Drake's exceptional contributions, they had emerged victorious. A moment of pure triumph, the sweet taste of a hard-won victory shared among new comrades. They had reached the end. Or so they thought.
