Chapter 34 - Mission Type, Escape Part 1

[Floor 5]

[Mission Type – Escape]

[Goal – Get out of the designated area!]

Escape! That was the purpose of the trial.

We did not need to fight the ogres.

I quickly turned to my comrades.

"Have everyone seen the mission window? We don't need to face the ogres. We just need to escape."

I told them.

"But which way should we go? The plain is so vast I can't see where we're supposed to escape to."

Shanny said.

"Shouldn't we just pick a direction away from the ogres?"

Jonah asked.

"We can't just run around aimlessly. If we stay on this plain, the ogres will definitely catch up to us and that'll mean death for us."

I told them.

Currently the ogres were approaching us from the north.

If we stayed here, they would reach us in less than a minute.

However, even if we were to run, the ogres would still catch up with us eventually.

Larson probably died because he did not know where to go and ended up surrounded by the monsters.

We could not aimlessly run through the plains. We needed somewhere that would shield us from the hordes, quick.

I looked around and used the magic lens to survey the area.

"There!"

I shouted to my party.

About far east of our position lied a garrison surrounded by a thin forest. Its huge brick walls seemed strong enough to hold off the ogres.

"What's over there?!"

Gerson shouted. He seemed to be panicking slightly, eager to flee.

"A garrison! We don't have much time! Run!"

Everyone followed my instruction and began sprinting to the east.

I looked to my left and saw the hordes getting closer to us.

I did not need my magic lens to see them clearly anymore.

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

The explosive sound of every footstep the ogres made as they ran toward us echoed across the entire plain.

They rapidly reduced the distance between us.

"This won't do."

I waved my hands around and formed an intricate symbol from the threads of mana that flowed out of my fingers.

['Serafina (★★★★)' is casting temporary enchantment.]

A window notifying about my spell-casting appeared before me. Possibly the effect of the Hero Reaction Research levelling up that the fairy told me about.

Green light glowed on the legs of my comrades and I. We suddenly sprinted slightly faster than we were before.

[Enchantment casted!]

[Party 1's agility has increased by 15% for the next 20 minutes.]

"Huh? What's happening?"

"I feel so light!"

My party members were surprised by my spell.

"I casted a temporary enchantment to boost our speed. Just keep running!"

We ran and ran and ran.

However, even with my speed enchantment, the thousands of ogres kept reducing the distance between us.

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

The ground shook even stronger now that they were close to us.

"Kyaaa!"

Cecily screamed as she glanced at the approaching ogres.

"Don't look back! Keep running!"

I yelled at her.

Fortunately, the garrison was already within our sight.

Its gate was thankfully already wide open.

We just needed to enter the garrison and seal the gate behind us.

Kraagggghhhhh!!!

The ogres were approaching fast.

Now that they were near, they began to close in on us from various directions.

Twenty-three to our right. More than fifty behind us. And the rest of the thousands to our left.

"Look straight ahead! Don't look at them! Keep your eyes on the gate!"

Kroaahhh!!!

An ogre broke away from the horde and sprinted at us from our flank.

It intended to intercept our course to the garrison.

Not on my watch.

[Davah Shashanam]

I used telekinesis to protrude a portion of the ground to the surface and caused the ogre to stumble on it.

The monster tripped and collapsed face-first to the ground.

Without having to worry about any obstacle, we resumed our run toward the garrison.

The ogres were about fifteen steps between us when we passed through the gate.

[Davah Shashanam]

I quickly shut the gate with my telekinesis.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The ogres wasted no time trying to force it open with their overwhelming strength.

Thankfully the gate was made of iron so it managed to hold the impact.

But judging from the huge dents the ogres made, the gate would not last for long if the ogres kept their effort up.

I looked around the inside of the garrison and found ruined buildings scattered all over.

I waved my hands over the buildings and tore all of them apart using telekinesis.

I brought the debris over to the gate and piled them over to seal the entrance further.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

I could hear the ogres kept persisting to break through from the other side of the debris.

I held my arms up over the pile and used my magic to hold them together during the ogres' siege.

As I kept the entrance sealed, I looked over to my comrades. They were all exhausted from running through the plains.

[Enchantment over.]

[Party 1's agility has returned to normal.]

Around the same time, my spell had worn off. Thankfully we had reached the garrison before it happened.

"Everyone alright?"

I asked them as I kept the gate sealed up.

"Yes, we're fine."

Jonah replied on the rest's behalf.

"Is the trial not over yet? We've escaped the ogres!"

Cecily asked while curled on the floor.

"Apparently we haven't escaped far enough."

Shanny said while gripping her sword.

"W-where else should we go?!"

Gerson cried.

Indeed. The mission was for us to get out of the designated area.

I had slightly hope this garrison would be the escape point.

But seeing we were still here, it meant we still needed to journey along further.

"We need to find a way out of this garrison. Is there another entrance?"

I asked my party.

They quickly looked around the place.

"There! Right on the other side!"

Jonah pointed out.

While keeping the seal in place, I looked back to the other side of the garrison. On the eastern side to be exact.

There was a pile of debris by the side of the wall. Buried behind it was another gate.

"Alright! I'll pile more debris to the gate on our side. After that we'll make a run for the other--"

Crash!

The gate on the other side swung open, breaking down the debris blocking it.

Entering the garrison from the other entrance was a giant humanoid horned monster carrying a wooden club the size of a small house.
