Rend roared; its subordinates charged, surrounding Ryu Takeno and Kumoko. They weren't letting them go.
Is Rend treating them as the Queen Spider's subordinates because of Kumoko?
Whatever the reason, they had to escape Rend's encirclement before the Queen Spider noticed them; otherwise, it was a death sentence.
The Queen Spider was a mythical monster, far beyond these dragon-types.

Ryu Takeno shot out like an arrow, opening his mouth to attack Rend in the air. They had no time to hesitate; the best defense was a good offense.
Rend looked down at the small snake, contemptuous.
Weak Gunerush were mere snacks to dragons.
If it were a several-kilometer-long Overlord Serpent, Rend might hesitate. But a ten-meter-long Gunerush daring to challenge it was suicidal.
It opened its mouth, preparing to swallow the snack before the battle.

The red Gunerush rapidly expanded in mid-air, growing from ten meters to a kilometer in an instant.
