"Are the water ways still working? I guess it still hasn't been much time since it occurred" Kael said.
"What do you mean? Do you know what happened or why it happened" the girl asked.
Kael remained silent for a few seconds staring at her face with a blank look
"Why are you looking at me like that, do you think that I can't handle it? Don't worry, my parents used to say I'm quite mature for my age" she said
"I don't want to waste my time answering your stupid question" Kael replied in a solid tone and moves forward
'Huh? Why is he being so rude about it, and he speaks like he is older than me, if I look at him, he is barely my age' she thought standing there
The two kids hugged the girl, she put her hands on both their heads and rubbed them
"Don't worry, mom and dad are fine, they will come and save us from here, they will take us to our home, and we will live together happily forever" she comforted them completely aware that it's a reality that is too far away.
They continued through the sewer system, occasionally checking above ground only to find monsters lurking around on the above ground.
'Why did I even save them, they are just deadweight to me and my survival, I have to share my food, they aren't even related to me, but whenever this thought come to my mind, something feels heavy on my chest, I only felt this sensation after that creature died, up until now I never felt anything even about that, no anger, not even sadness' Kael thought.
"Hey, um…..kid, when are we going above, I feel sick here, it is nauseating to even walk here" the girl asks.
"*sigh*look even I don't want to stick in okay, I'm just taking precautions to at least live, and my name is not kid, call me Kael" he replies
"Well it not too late to introduce ourselves, My name is Emily, these two are twins Henry and peter they're my brothers, and they're six years old" she says.
They continue to move forward after the late introductions through and through for a few days until they only have a few supplies, Emily is the one who notices this as she was carrying the supplies to at least be of some help.
"We are too short on the supplies, we have to go up to get the food and required materials" she says
"There should be a maintenance ladder if we go a bit further, let's just walk for a bit till we are there" kael responds
They walk a bit further and just as he predicted there was a maintenance ladder, he climbed up first and peeked above, nothing in sight, or at least until now, he gestured to climb up the ladder once he got out, one by one they got out, they walked on a street and turned a corner, to their luck an abandoned gas station was present.
"Let's restock on our supplies, and lets stay the night here, it will be better then down there" says Kael
The siblings agree and enter the store, the twins are the first to fall asleep as they're younger and they felt stressed.
They were in the tunnels for so long that even if it was night time they felt normal about it and they were not scared, Kael sat by the window to keep a look out, Emily once done on packing up noticed him, sitting nearby to the window, she walked up to him.
"How do you know all this, I mean surviving like this, did you have someone to teach you" she asks
"mother" he replies with a monotone voice
"Where is she now?"She asks again
"Dead" he replies without any hesitation
"I'm Sorry" she says
"Being sorry doesn't let you live, you have to survive" Kael replies
"How old are you barely look my age, I'm twelve by the way" she asks
"I'm eight, going to turn nine this month" says Kael
"When is it, we have to celebrate it" she says
"What's the use of celebrating in a ruined world" he replied
She just stares at him
"What are you looking at?" he asks
"I'm just amazed at how you can talk so.....like an adult" she says
"Like a what?"He replies
"No, nothing, I was just taking to myself" she says
'she is weird' he thought
Suddenly a scraping sound comes from the other side of the roof, it sounds like metal against concrete, it slowly starts to move to the opposite side of the roof, Kael grips his knife tightly which was on his waist
Thud*
Something dropped from the roof before the front door
It was something big as you could see its shadow trough the blinds of the window, it wasn't moving, it was as still as a rock
Suddenly-crash*
A needle like spike pierces through the door, Kael misses it just by an inch, just near his eye, and it waits a few moments before it retracts, and just when they thought it was over, again the needle like thing pierces through the door, now in a different position, Kael signals Emily to move without making a sound to the backdoor with the twins who were now awake, she does as said and starts heading that way
Crumple*
She steps on a paper on the ground, it wasn't a loud enough noise, but enough to give the creature a hint on where they were
Kael notices this
"MOVE!" he shouts, as he sees the spike charging at the siblings

Kael manages to cut the spike with his knife, he relaxed, but he did not know what was about to come next
