Chapter 11 - Confused

Zixin slowly sat on his bed, and after a few stretches, he went to take a bath. After which, he changed into his uniform and headed to the library.

Within the library, Zixin immediately found the book he was searching for. It was titled: 'Getting Along.'

Looking at the soft brown cover, Zixin found the book's author. Someone named Avery of Pity.

The name seemed to have awakened a few hidden memories that Zixin knew regarding the Pity Bloodline. His thoughts moved, making him think, Avery of Pity… isn't this the person who apparently sold all their belongings to establish the Orphanage of the Lost? I can't believe that I remembered something like this. It feels like a waste of memory but who cares? It's comforting to know that someone can be so kind.

Zixin shook his head, going to the counter to borrow the book.

The young lady at the counter with long black hair, and gleaming purple eyes asked Zixin, "Is there anything you need?"

Zixin nodded, replying, "I want to borrow this book."

Zixin placed the book at the counter, then the young lady took it. After waiting for a few minutes, she handed Zixin back the book with a small brown card, "The deadline is about two weeks from now. You can return it right?"

"I shall return it in time."

Zixin then left and sat on a bench. He opened the book reading its contents with interest.

After reading a good portion of the contents, he began to analyze what they meant, So social activities require psychology? Hmm… no, I could talk to someone and not bother about little details like hand gestures but still be able to obtain what I want. I suppose that's just me being efficient as a person… Well, the book states that these small actions could have deep meaning but it just sounds annoying to try and keep track of it. Maybe I should try just this once.

Zixin stood up, ready to head to his first class. On his way to his first class, he saw Cael wearing a new pair of black glasses.

Cael noticed Zixin and waved at him, Zixin returned the gesture but he only made himself seem awkward. Cael walked up to him and explained who gave him the glasses despite Zixin not even asking, "These glasses were gifted to me by my master a few days ago. I thought it'd be a good idea to wear them from now on."

Zixin then tried to observe Cael's movements, trying to understand them but this only confused Cael, so he asked, scratching his face, "Uh… is there something wrong? Why are you so fixated?"

Zixin stayed silent before replying with a defeated sigh, "I couldn't observe anything particularly important from your small bodily movement."

Zixin's reply didn't help ease Cale's confusion, it did the opposite–it enhanced it.

Zixin's thoughts raced, wondering why he couldn't find anything. Why did I not find anything? Wait, I just started so finding anything is very unlikely. How did I forget this? I must be senile.

Time soon passed by, and now, Zixin sat in his seat in Alchemy class. Zixin listened closely to Professor Ceylon's words.

Professor Ceylon stood firm, watching whether everyone paid attention. He explained, "I hope you all remember this well, because I will only explain this one time. A few days from now, we will be having our first Task of the year. You will all prepare materials, and make one of the basic potions that we previously discussed"

His gaze hardened, speaking, "Today, I am giving you all the time to discuss with your partner on what potion to make, who will prepare the materials, and such. Now, begin!"

Zixin and Cael turned to look at each other, both speaking, "Flash Potion."

Both of them returned to silence–stunned at how they both thought of the same potion.

Cael chuckled, commenting with a smile, "It's quite rare to see people say the exact same words in sync. How delightful, maybe this is a sign that we should go for the flash potion."

Cael then asked, trying to understand, "But why did you pick the flash potion? It's a little confusing too."

Zixin explained, recovering from being stunned, "I have made flash potions before, and after calculating my success rate for each potion, the result ended up with the flash potion having an 82% success rate. The highest one and with a huge gap at that."

Zixin then asked the latter, "So why did you pick the flash potion?"

After hearing Zixin's thought process, Cael felt embarrassed to tell Zixin his reasoning but he bit his lip and explained, "I just uh… picked at random you see."

Zixin gave Cael a deadpan look, sighing internally. He then tried to help Cael by explaining how the process worked but Cael spoke before him, asking, "So, are we going for the flash potion?"

Zixin confirmed, "Yes, since we both agreed, there's no reason to change it."

Zixin then began explaining to Cael. This process took most of their time in class so before they knew it, Alchemy class was already over.

Zixin and Cael then went to the rest of their classes.

After all their classes for the day had concluded, Cael tried to invite Zixin, fully expecting him to refuse like usual, "Hey! I have a decent idea for us to do so do you want to hang out?"

Zixin turned to look at Cael, clearly used to this by now. He replied nonchalantly, "Sure."

Cael was utterly stunned. After all, this was the first time he had seen Zixin accept someone's proposal.

Cael then asked, "So why did you accept? You normally refuse."

Zixin took out a book, the same book titled: 'Getting Along,' and explained, "After reading this book, and grasping its contents, I have come to a simple conclusion: accepting offers is a good way to 'get along.'"

Cael just stood there confused, he muttered, "Isn't this common sense?"
