He lowered the blade but didn't put it away entirely. "Tomorrow morning they will drag you to the gallows in the main courtyard. My father will ask if you have any last words. That is when you make your wish."
"What wish?"
"The one he promised you for winning the second round. The gift he never granted." Koda's eyes glittered in the torchlight. "He made that promise in front of witnesses. Judges, nobles, the other competitors. He cannot take it back without losing face."
I thought about the events in the great hall that brought me here. King Nahuel offering me anything within reason, then sentencing me to death when I asked for what I really wanted. He'd ignored his own promise, dismissed it the moment I drew my blade.
"He'll just ignore it again," I said.
