"Scarlett, sweet Scarlett," I whisper, taking slow steps toward her. I reach out, intending to grab her throat, but just as my fingers near her, she vanishes like dust.
I scan the room. The trees that once surrounded me are gone. Beneath my feet, the texture shifts—from wet grass to coarse sand.
"Lilith… could it be?" Max walks closer. His eyes say everything—he knows we're trapped. The trap might only affect me, but neither of us can escape.
"There is no way out." Only Max and I remain in that black place. All the Scarlets have turned to nothing but ash and sand.
"Do you remember the magic spells for broken souls?"I nod immediately.
"But why broken souls? Wouldn't it make more sense to use the spells for hungry souls?"
As soon as I asked, a wave of realization hit me.
The spell for hungry souls works on demonic spirits like ghosts—spirits that wear the appearance of humans. Their sole purpose is to feed. They are always hungry, unlike cursed angels. Cursed angels are mostly broken souls. They feed on humans not out of hunger, but out of despair.
I was slightly angry at myself at first for not thinking of the hungry soul spell.
"Step back," I ordered Max. He obeys without question.
I press on my wounded palm until blood begins to drip.
Softly, I begin the spell...
