Chapter 33: Málaga's Last Stand

October 21, 2017 – Camp Nou, Barcelona

La Liga Matchday 9: FC Barcelona vs. Málaga CF

Rain tapped gently against the glass as Noah stood in his office, watching the grounds crew prepare the pitch. His eyes followed the white paint lines, not out of habit, but calculation.

"They'll stall," he murmured.

A knock.

Puig stepped in, wiping his hands with tape still hanging from his wrists. "They're using a 5-4-1. I just saw the lineup."

Noah turned. "Wrong. It's a 5-5-0."

Puig frowned. "No strikers?"

"No runners," Noah said. "No exits. They're not here to score."

Inside the Locker Room

The players sat in silence. Rain thudded lightly against the roof above.

Noah paced slowly in front of them.

"They won't fight you," he said. "They'll deny you. Like a lock that never turns."

He stopped in front of Mbappé.

"You'll have space—but only when you stop looking for it."

Then to Pedri:

"They'll bait you into overthinking. Don't."

Finally, he turned to Messi, who sat with his head tilted back, eyes half-closed.

"Walk until they forget you exist," Noah said. "Then write your name across their goal."

Messi gave a slow, knowing nod.

Starting XI

GK: Ter Stegen

DEF: Alba – Umtiti – Piqué – Semedo

MID: Busquets – Puig – Pedri

FOR: Messi – Mbappé – Suárez

Tunnel – Just Before Kickoff

Mbappé bounced on his heels, whispering under his breath. "Don't rush. Don't rush."

Noah placed a hand on his shoulder. "They'll wait for you to panic. Let them drown in their own stillness."

Mbappé swallowed hard and nodded.

First Half – Minute 1 to 25

The whistle blew, and instantly the shape of the match revealed itself.

Málaga parked a wall. A 5-man back line buried deep. A 5-man midfield squeezed into the half-space like a vice.

Noah stood with arms crossed.

"They're not even pretending," he muttered.

Suárez backed into his marker and received a pass from Alba.

He spun, one touch—

Blocked.

Pedri stepped forward.

No movement.

No runs.

He passed back to Puig. Then Busquets. Then Messi.

Still nothing.

"They're not defending," Messi muttered as he turned toward Puig.

"They're waiting."

Minute 28 – Frustration Mounts

Semedo made an overlapping run. Mbappé ignored it.

Instead, he took the ball inside—cut past one defender, then two—then three converged.

Down he went.

No whistle.

He slapped the grass.

"Get up," Messi said, passing him.

Mbappé blinked, frustrated. "I had him."

"No. You had a trap," Messi replied, calmly.

Sideline – Noah Adjusts

Noah knelt, drew three dots with his finger on the whiteboard tablet.

"Forget width," he told his assistant. "We funnel."

He turned to the bench.

"Puig becomes the pivot. Messi drops. Pedri shadows the final line."

Then he called out to Busquets.

"Switch. Push Pedri higher."

Busquets nodded.

Minute 36 – Messi Drops Deep

Now Messi stood where Busquets usually played.

He received. One touch. Turned.

No one followed him.

He glanced up. Saw space behind the second line.

Pedri stepped in. A sudden dart.

Messi curled it over the midfield wall.

Pedri took it on the bounce.

One tap.

Shot.

GOAL – Pedri.

1–0 Barcelona.

Finally.

Second Half – Málaga's Wall Cracks

Minute 52. They had no choice now. Málaga shifted slightly forward.

That was all it took.

Puig stepped into the vacuum. Passed to Semedo.

Semedo to Mbappé.

Mbappé cut in.

He stopped. Waited.

Then darted left.

He didn't look. Just passed across the box—

Messi appeared out of the fog.

GOAL – Messi.

2–0.

A smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.

He jogged back past Mbappé and said, "Told you. Wait long enough, and ghosts appear."

Minute 70 – Noah Makes His Final Move

He turned to the bench.

"Bring on Rakitic. Take off Piqué."

His assistant blinked. "We're dropping a center-back?"

Noah nodded. "There's no one left to defend. We press with six."

The change rolled out.

Now the formation warped into a 2-4-4 in possession.

It wasn't pretty.

It was overwhelming.

Minute 78 – Final Blow

Rakitic floated a high ball into the left channel.

Messi took it, didn't trap it—just clipped it mid-bounce.

Mbappé rushed the back post.

GOAL – Mbappé.

3–0.

This time, he didn't celebrate.

He turned toward the bench, exhaled, and mouthed, "Finally."

Full-Time – Barcelona 3 – 0 Málaga

The whistle echoed through Camp Nou.

Málaga left the field without looking back.

Noah walked calmly toward the tunnel.

He paused as he passed Messi, who was pulling off his boots.

"You heard them," Noah said.

Messi looked up. "They weren't saying no. They were asking how long we'd wait."
