Chapter 56 - Chapter 56: Front Page Scandal

"There's no doubt that Hugo Lancaster was the most eye-catching man in all of Los Angeles on March 18th. Not only did he steal every woman's attention with his youthful energy and elegant good looks at the premiere of Final Analysis, but both Kim Basinger and Uma Thurman, two top-tier beauties, seemed to be enamored with this handsome man every frown and smile was all for Hugo."

This was how James Latt's report in American Weekly described the premiere the next day. It was obvious that his focus had entirely shifted to Hugo.

"When Hugo appeared on the red carpet, a Givenchy custom-made suit from the spring collection perfectly showcased his handsome charm, so striking it made people gasp. His captivating presence became the brightest highlight of the evening before the Los Angeles sunset. Setting aside his acting achievements, Hugo's stunning looks were beyond dispute whether it's the wise and steady Michael Douglas or the charming and attractive Richard Gere, neither could compare to Hugo. This twenty-five-year-old youth lit up the spring of 1992 with his warm and gentle charisma.

I imagine there won't be many voices of opposition just look at the audience's reaction at the premiere. The admiration from Basinger and Thurman further confirms Hugo's magnetic pull over women.

As Hollywood's goddess in many hearts, Kim's allure needs no further validation. Yet even she couldn't help but be drawn to Hugo. 'When I saw him, I thought, I must meet him. So I did,' Kim said in an interview after the premiere. After the little incident before the screening, Kim again welcomed Hugo's attendance in a post-viewing audience interview. 'You made my night wonderful.' Hugo, sitting in the audience, responded with a shy smile. So if someone spots Kim and Hugo dining out together three days later, don't be surprised.

Uma Thurman, a twenty-two-year-old actress with stunning beauty and a promising Hollywood future, planted a fiery kiss on Hugo's lips under everyone's gaze last night. That passionate kiss was a radiant burst of youthful brilliance.

Undoubtedly, the explosive chemistry between Uma and Hugo heated up the atmosphere, and it also raised the biggest question in everyone's minds that night: could there be a romance between the two? Although Uma denied this in interviews after the premiere, insisting they were just friends very good friends she didn't hide her affection for Hugo, and Hugo echoed her sentiments.

Still, if Uma and Hugo did get together, I doubt anyone would object.

That dazzling kiss became the absolute focal point of attention in Los Angeles last night.

Aside from that, Richard Gere also exuded his mature charm on the red carpet, still as elegant as ever. He is the lead actor of Final Analysis, and he expressed that it was a pleasure working with Kim and Uma. Meanwhile, Columbia Pictures' Basic Instinct also held its grand premiere at the Chinese Theatre, with lead stars Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone dressed to the nines."

After reading this report, it's clear that Hugo was the absolute star in James's article. Richard and the leads of Basic Instinct were reduced to mere side notes. Take a look at American Weekly's front page this week a large photo of Uma passionately kissing Hugo on the cheek dominates the cover. Their beautiful silhouettes stand out under the theatre's golden lights, with the bold headline "Suspected Romance?" catching every eye.

In fact, it wasn't just American Weekly. The day after the Final Analysis premiere, more than 60% of entertainment media chose Hugo and Uma's passionate kiss as their front-page image. Another 20% gave Basic Instinct its front-page glory, and the remaining 20% was a mix of other topics—half of which still revolved around Hugo. Topics like Hugo stealing Richard's spotlight, Hugo's unexpected presence disrupting both premieres' plans, and Hugo's powerful comeback after the Razzies…

One could say Hugo's appearance this time wasn't just a success it was an overwhelming triumph. The $4,500 spent on his suit was absolutely worth it. Givenchy's spring design instantly became the hottest topic among Hollywood elites. In contrast, Richard's Armani outfit paled a bit in comparison. One wonders how Frank, the manager of Armani's Rodeo Drive branch, must be feeling now.

More surprisingly, Uma's kiss with Hugo ignited all the buzz, thanks to a perfect storm of timing, location, and chemistry. Uma was still a relatively new actress, and Hugo was coming off a low point in his career. Even if they really had a romance, it might not have generated such a huge splash.

But on one hand, Hugo's first appearance since the Razzies created plenty of buzz, paired with the buildup from Scent of a Woman. On the other, Hugo's radiant charm that night drew the gaze of everyone including Kim and Uma. And let's not forget the films Final Analysis and Basic Instinct both contained heavy erotic themes, which amplified all discussions of looks, charm, and male-female dynamics.

All these factors combined led to the explosive result we saw today something no one had expected.

Richard Gere's agent bought all the major newspapers and magazines early in the morning, but after seeing the front pages, he stashed them away, hoping Richard wouldn't read today's news and get upset. Unfortunately, as a veteran with fifteen years in the industry, Richard hadn't forgotten his habit of reading the papers after premieres. So when he asked his agent, "How's the press? Good reaction?" he immediately noticed something was off the evasive gaze and stammered reply clued him in. "Where are the newspapers?"

And so, Richard saw the gigantic photo and bold headline in American Weekly and other publications. Worse still, the coverage about him and the film was barely a footnote at the end. Richard hadn't seen this kind of treatment in years, and his face immediately turned stiff with frustration.

Ron Meyer looked at American Weekly's front page as if he had just swallowed a fly his face full of shock and disbelief, soon replaced by anger and rage. Thinking back to when Hugo and Joseph had volunteered to attend the Basic Instinct premiere, only to be turned down by him Ron felt like he'd just been slapped across the face.

Hugo's successful appearance at the rival premiere of Basic Instinct was the first slap to Ron's face. Then Hugo stole all the attention even the grand premiere of Basic Instinct at the Chinese Theatre couldn't grab the top headlines. Instead, it was just a footnote in reports about Hugo's scandal. That was the second slap to Ron's face.

Ron could feel the burning pain on his cheeks, a wave of humiliation instantly drowning him. "Gary!" Ron dragged out the name with a voice full of repressed fury. The shout startled Gary, who had been waiting just outside the door. He knew things had taken a turn for the worse. Although he was personally thrilled to see Hugo's handsome figure gracing the front pages, enduring Ron's wrath wasn't so delightful.

Gary pushed open the office door and entered, only to be immediately hit by something hurled in his direction. He instinctively dodged, and looking down, he saw it was a crumpled-up copy of the front page of American Weekly. Then he heard Ron's voice, suppressed with seething rage, asking, "Where's the front page of Entertainment Weekly?"

"Hugo and Uma." Gary had to suppress the delight bubbling up inside him and tried to respond as calmly as possible.

"The Los Angeles Times?"

"Hugo," Gary said happily, adding excitedly, "It's a solo photo of Hugo on the red carpet, really handsome…" But he didn't even finish the sentence before being silenced by the murderous glare from Ron. The rest of the words got stuck in his throat. "The photo really did turn out great…" Gary muttered in a low voice.

"Bastard! Animal! Damn disgusting ass.hole!" Ron finally lost control, raging as he kicked his executive chair and stormed around the office like a madman, resembling a time bomb about to explode at any second.

Although Gary hadn't been Ron's assistant for long, Ron had gone through assistants frequently. After he got hired, he'd asked several of his predecessors and learned that Ron's temper was notoriously awful. At this moment, giving him some good news would be the smartest thing to do. "But 'Basic. Instinct' has gotten a really strong market reaction. The overall media and audience feedback is better than 'Final Analysis.'" That was probably the only bright spot from last night's premiere. In a head-to-head between two similar films, "Basic Instinct" came out on top. Although Final Analysis had better reviews, Basic Instinct obviously had greater buzz. Simply put, the former might be more critically acclaimed, but the latter had more potential at the box office.

But clearly, even this good news couldn't calm Ron down. He paused for a moment before roaring again, "But it's Hugo Hugo Hugo everywhere! Why can't I find anything about our movie?!"

"Uh… maybe because Hugo's really handsome?" Gary answered cautiously.

"…Get out!"
