Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 - Meet the Team

"So… this is my first mission, huh?" I muttered under my breath, standing at the village gates with a backpack that felt lighter than my nerves.

Technically, I wasn't even a real ninja yet. But thanks to Kakashi's glowing recommendation and some intense begging, Dad finally gave in and let me tag along—with heavy restrictions. No fighting. No taking charge. Just watch, listen, learn.

Basically, I was a glorified intern.

Two chunin stood near the gate, already geared up and waiting. One was a tall guy with short brown hair, arms crossed and eyes narrowed like I'd already failed some test. The other was a girl—short, freckled, and smiling way too much for someone about to escort a client through bandit-infested roads.

"Yo," I greeted, trying to sound casual. "You two my babysitters for today?"

The guy scoffed. "You're the Hokage's kid, huh?"

"And you're…?" I shot back, eyebrow raised.

He didn't answer right away.

"Name's Iwao," he finally said, tone dry. "And that sunshine beside me is Kana."

"Hi!" Kana waved, way too energetic for 7 AM. "Wow, you're actually cuter than the rumors!"

"…Thanks?" I blinked.

Iwao rolled his eyes. "Keep your head on straight, Kana. He's not here for compliments."

"Oh relax," she said with a grin. "We're just escorting a merchant. What could go wrong?"

Oh, don't say that. You've jinxed it now.

A plump man waddled into view, struggling with a box tied to his back and a travel hat too small for his head. Judging by the sweat pouring off him, he wasn't exactly used to exercise.

"That's our client," Iwao said. "Name's Tosaka. He sells luxury fabrics."

Tosaka stopped in front of us, catching his breath dramatically like he'd just climbed a mountain. "My precious silks must reach the port in Tazuna Town intact. If a single thread is damaged, I will demand a refund from your Hokage!"

"Nice to meet you too," I mumbled.

We started walking soon after, taking the less-used trade route to avoid crowded paths. For the first thirty minutes, no one talked much—except Kana, who apparently had the energy of five toddlers and the curiosity of a cat on catnip.

"So Boruto, is it true you trained under the Sixth Hokage? What's he like? Did he teach you that finger-lightning move?"

"You mean Chidori?"

"YES! That one!"

"Not yet," I said with a smirk. "He says it's like handing a lightsaber to a kid who still sleeps with a nightlight."

Kana laughed. Iwao didn't.

"You're pretty cocky for someone still in the Academy," he said. "You even pass the written test yet?"

"I aced it, actually."

He looked surprised. Not that he'd admit it. "Hmph. Doesn't mean you're ready for the field."

"Hey, I didn't ask to be here," I said, slightly annoyed. "Your boss pushed me into this."

"Actually," Kana whispered, "your dad is his boss."

That shut him up.

Hours passed, and the forest trail became quieter. Birds chirped lazily, and a soft breeze blew through the trees. I couldn't help but glance around.

It was peaceful.

But also… boring.

"I thought ninja life would be more exciting," I muttered.

"Careful what you wish for," Iwao said. "You'll get action soon enough."

"Yeah, yeah."

Tosaka kept stopping every ten minutes to re-tie his sandal or complain about a bug bite. The guy moved slower than a slug on vacation. But it gave us time to talk. Kana asked me about school, friends, and if I had a girlfriend. I dodged all the questions with expert skill.

Eventually, Iwao loosened up too. He told me about his first mission, where he threw up on a bandit after slipping in horse poop. I laughed so hard I nearly tripped over a tree root.

"Don't get used to this," he warned. "We're only friendly 'cause it's your first gig."

"Sure, buddy," I grinned. "I'm growing on you, admit it."

He didn't respond.

But he also didn't deny it.

We made camp for the night near a river. Kana started a fire, Iwao sharpened kunai, and I volunteered to cook instant noodles. Not because I'm nice. Because I'm starving.

"Do you miss your dad?" Kana asked while we ate.

I paused, noodle halfway to my mouth.

"…Sometimes," I said. "He's busy. Hokage stuff, y'know?"

She nodded. "Still, must be cool. Everyone looks up to him."

I smiled softly. "Yeah. I do too."

Even Iwao seemed thoughtful for a second.

"Hey, Boruto," he said suddenly. "You're not bad, for a brat."

"Aww. I'm blushing," I said, placing a hand over my chest. "That the nicest thing you've ever said to anyone?"

"Don't get used to it."

And just like that, the night passed peacefully—maybe this world isn't so bad after all.
