"Mr. Brook!" After leaving Josh's study, a heavily burdened Vito quickly followed the servant's directions and found Brook, who was polishing a car.
"Oh, Vito, what's the matter?" Brook stopped his work and asked.
"It's Mr. Kane who asked me to find you. He told me that you know something about the cause of my father's death!" Vito said, looking at Brook.
"Ah, so it's about that. I do know something. Get in the car," Brook nodded and motioned for Vito to get in, then he took the driver's seat.
Without hesitation, Vito got into the passenger seat.
Brook drove, taking them to the port area, where Vito's father had worked at the docks.
"Hey, who are you?" When the car stopped, a worker immediately stepped forward to ask.
"I'm looking for Vinnie," Brook casually tossed a cigarette at him.
For people at this level of society, a few cigarettes could solve most problems without needing any money.
And for Brook, since his boss, Josh, was in the tobacco business, their group of bodyguards, in addition to their salaries, received three packs of cigarettes each month as a benefit. They lived more comfortably than American soldiers and didn't mind a few cigarettes.
"Vinnie, someone's looking for you!" The worker sniffed the cigarette, grinned, and stuck it behind his ear, then turned and shouted.
Soon, a shifty-eyed young worker emerged from the crowd of people unloading goods.
"Ah, Mr. Brook, it's you!" When the young man saw that it was Brook looking for him, he hurried over and fawned, though he didn't know Brook's true identity, he knew that Brook was a "big shot."
"Tell me again what you know about Antonio," Brook said to the young man. Antonio was Vito's father's name.
"So, it's about that. Hehehe…" The dock worker named Vinnie grinned and rubbed his hands, but instead of continuing, he looked at Vito and asked, "Who's this?"
"That's none of your concern! Now, tell me!" Brook snorted and tossed a pack of opened cigarettes at Vinnie.
"Yes, yes, I spoke too much!" Seeing the half-used pack of cigarettes, Vinnie immediately stuffed it into his pocket with a grin. "If I'm right, Antonio's death was done by Stephen."
"Stephen? Who's Stephen?" Vito immediately asked.
"He's the number one thug for our boss, Derek, the head honcho around here. That night, I saw them leave together, but only Stephen came back, and he was soaking wet. The next day, we found out Antonio drowned in the canal...How ridiculous! The canal is barely a meter deep, even a kid wouldn't drown in it!" Vinnie described vividly.
Vito, standing next to him, felt a surge of anger.
Although this was just the words of this dock worker, he already believed 90% of it.
He didn't know who Stephen was, but he did know Derek. Derek was his father's boss and a well-known local thug. Vito had heard his name many times when he was involved in petty crime.
"Do you know where Stephen and your boss Derek are now?" Brook nodded and then asked.
"Of course. Over there, that's their office. At this time, they should be there," Vinnie pointed to a row of warehouses on the other side of the docks and indicated the second floor.
"Thanks, Vinnie. You can go back to your work now!" Brook patted Vinnie's shoulder after looking at where he pointed.
"Okay, Mr. Brook, but you're not going to tell anyone about this, right? If Stephen hears about it, he'll kill me!" Vinnie asked carefully.
"Of course, only the three of us know about this. Don't worry!" Brook reassured him.
Vinnie then grinned and went back to his work.
"What are you planning to do?" After Vinnie left, Brook looked at Vito, who had lit a cigarette and was smoking in silence.
"Of course, I'm going to get revenge for my father!" Vito flicked the cigarette butt away and stomped it out.
"Then I think you might need a little help!" Brook nodded, then motioned for Vito to follow.
Vito, a bit puzzled, followed Brook to the back of the car. When Brook opened the trunk and lifted the cover to reveal what was inside, Vito couldn't help but widen his eyes.
Inside the trunk, neatly arranged, were five or six Thompson submachine guns, emitting a faint glow as they lay on a bed of sponge pads. There were also seven or eight handguns, all military-grade M1911s.
"You can pick what you're comfortable with," Brook patted Vito on the shoulder.
"Wait, what do you mean? Are we just going to go in guns blazing? These people have seen our faces!" Vito was a bit dazed, then pointed to the dock workers who were unloading goods.
"You're kidding, right? Don't worry, Mr. Kane's influence is far beyond your imagination. These workers wouldn't dare to turn us in. Even if someone does, the police won't come after us. Besides, it's not us doing this, it's you...Or do you think you can't handle a few punks?" Brook said carelessly.
When Josh told Vito to find him, Brook already knew what Josh meant.
Brook wasn't just a regular bodyguard, he often did errands for Josh.
This was exactly what Vito had thought earlier: a favor, but also a loyalty oath.
To openly take revenge for his father's death.
From now on, Vito wouldn't be able to betray Josh.
"No, I can handle it!" Vito understood what Brook meant and wasn't scared at all.
After all, someone who had been through the artillery-heavy European battlefield wasn't afraid of a few dock thugs. What a joke!
Without hesitation, he grabbed two M1911s, checked the magazines, loaded them, then tucked them into his waist. He also shoved two more into his lower back.
Finally, he grabbed a Thompson submachine gun and slipped it into his coat.
Luckily, it was still late winter, so with the cold weather and his coat, it was hard to tell that Vito had so many weapons hidden under it.
Vito signaled that he was ready, and Brook drove him to the dock office building.
A few minutes later, as the sound of gunfire echoed from above, Brook calmly lit a cigarette.
When Vito came down, the cigarette was already finished.
"Not bad! Nice work!" Brook gave a satisfied expression when he saw Vito getting into the car, then immediately started the engine.
"What should we do with these?" Vito raised the guns in his hand.
"Just toss them in the backseat. I'll take care of them later!" Brook said.
Vito nodded, threw the guns in the backseat, then pulled out several stacks of dollars and various gift vouchers from his pockets.
"What's this?" Brook raised an eyebrow when he saw.
"They were in the safe. That guy was actually quite rich, but according to the rules, this should be handed in, right?" Vito said.
"Hahaha! What are you thinking? We're not a mafia. Our boss wouldn't care about this small change. Keep it, it's perfect for buying yourself a couple of new outfits!" Brook laughed loudly.
Indeed, mafia groups often had such rules, but Josh? How could he care about this money? Although it seemed like quite a bit, over ten thousand dollars.
Vito chuckled awkwardly. His mindset was still stuck in his days as a petty crook and soldier.
When he was a thug, the gang leader would usually take five or six shares, or even seven or eight if they were really harsh. Even in the army, if there was a good haul, the officers would take their share first.
This was his first time encountering a boss like Josh who didn't require his subordinates to turn in their earnings.
After a brief hesitation, he still took half of the money and handed it to Brook.
"What's this for?" Brook asked, surprised.
"Thank you for your help. Without you, I wouldn't have been able to take revenge so easily!" Vito said.
Brook smiled again when he heard Vito's words.
What an interesting kid.
This time, he didn't refuse, but directly took the money and tucked it into his jacket.
Josh didn't forbid this kind of additional profit from the work, so Brook had no reason to reject it. After all, no one would complain about having too much money.
While taking the money, Brook's fondness for his young colleague increased significantly.
Most of the time, only those who knew how to share could go further.
