A full moon hung over the volcanic ridges of Dragonstone, casting pale silver light across the island's ancient terrain. No Targaryen dared to venture here.
Cannibal — the largest, most ancient of all living dragons — made his lair in the abandoned volcanic caldera, surrounded by the charred bones of lesser dragons.
His wings blotted the stars. His scales were blacker than night, iridescent with deep crimson veins that pulsed when he breathed.
Vaeron approached alone, riding Seasmoke part of the way before dismissing the mount to the sea.
He stood before the beast with nothing but his sword on his hip and a golden card in his palm glowing faintly.

He crushed the ticket in his hand.
The world turned silent.
A dome of golden light erupted around Vaeron, encasing both him and the monstrous shadow before him. The beast roared, volcanic fire billowing from its maw.
But then—it stopped.
A pulse of energy lashed out from Vaeron's chest like a heartbeat.
Cannibal's flame ceased. His wings fell slack. His eyes—blood-red pits of ancient wrath—dilated.
Then, the impossible happened:
He bowed.

The stars themselves seemed to shudder.
