Chapter 10 - That little kiss

Jin never wanted to be the reason Mian felt cornered. Never wanted her to feel caged or questioned. She had lived in the shadows of silence for too long — she deserved room to breathe.

So he kept his distance.

Not out of indifference, but out of quiet reverence.

He didn't ask too many questions. He didn't push.

He just wanted her near.

Even if that meant she was close in body but far in heart.

Days passed by cloaked in routine — unspoken emotions tucked neatly behind everyday gestures. They lived under the same roof like passing seasons, each waiting for the other to shift first.

Mian continued her duties as usual — always graceful, always calm.

Jin left for work each morning with the same straight face, the same quiet sigh behind the car door. But he always glanced back at the mansion, just once, hoping maybe… just maybe… she'd be watching.

She never was.

But today felt different.

Today, Mian was going to meet Ji Hoon — her old friend, her laughter from the past. She didn't say it out loud, but her energy was lighter, her steps just a little quicker. She finished her work with careful precision, checked the mirror one last time, adjusted her blouse.

She didn't dress up too much.

But it was enough for Jin to notice — if he were here.

Except he had already gone for the day.

As the sun dipped low, casting golden rays through the tall windows, Mian stepped out into the courtyard. She had just passed the front steps when her phone rang.

"Hello?" she answered softly, already halfway out the gate.

It was her mom.

"About that friend of yours… is he coming over to the house?" her mother asked cheerfully. "I thought I'd make something nice."

Mian smiled, touched. "No, Mom. He's not coming over. We're just meeting up outside."

But as soon as the words left her mouth, her smile froze.

Standing a few feet in front of her — Jin.

He had returned from work earlier than expected, his car parked behind him, coat draped over one arm. He wasn't saying anything. He was just watching her. And in that moment, it felt like the entire estate went silent.

She quickly ended the call. "Alright, Mom. I'll talk to you later."

There was an awkward beat as Mian lowered her phone. She tried to offer a casual smile.

"I didn't know you were back."

Jin's eyes didn't move from her face. His voice was low. Steady.

"Is there something you want to tell me?"

She hesitated, then answered with gentle honesty. "I'm just going to meet Ji Hoon. That's all."

Jin nodded slowly, but his jaw clenched ever so slightly.

"Isn't it a little late to meet up with a guy?" he asked, his tone calm — too calm — like he was trying to hold something back.

Mian let out a soft breath and smiled faintly. "It's just dinner. We're only catching up."

She glanced around. The mansion guards were standing a few feet away, purposely turned with their backs to them — giving them space without being told.

Something about the look on Jin's face made her heart ache — not anger, not jealousy exactly, but something softer… something unspoken.

And in that moment, she acted on impulse.

She took a step closer, standing right in front of him. He looked down at her, surprised but unmoving.

Mian raised her hands, wrapped them around the back of his neck, and gently pulled his face closer to hers.

Jin's breath caught.

Before he could say anything, she pressed a soft kiss to his cheek.

Then, just a beat later… a quick, lingering kiss on his lips.

And then she smiled — really smiled — and turned on her heel, running off with a light laugh as if her heart weren't thudding in her chest.

Jin stood frozen.

Everything stopped.

His heart, his breath… the entire world narrowed to that single moment. He slowly brought his hand up to his lips, touching the place where her kiss still lingered.

He blinked once. Then again.

And finally — a slow smile spread across his face. Not forced. Not careful. Just… real.

"She's mine," he thought. "Yes. This is it. She's really mine."

His chest felt lighter than it had in weeks.

A sleek black car rolled up to Mian as she reached the outer gate. The driver leaned out.

"Miss Mian," he said politely. "Sir asked me to drive you."

She looked back — just once. And there he was, still standing where she'd left him, watching her with the softest look she had ever seen on his face.

She nodded to the driver and got in.

As the car pulled away, Jin turned and walked back inside the mansion — but something in his step had changed.

The silence wasn't heavy anymore.

It was full of promise.

The sound of the front door clicking shut echoed softly behind him as Jin stepped back into the house. He loosened his tie with one hand but didn't toss it away like he usually did.

He paused in the hallway.

And stood there. Still.

Breathing.

His fingers slowly returned to his lips — not out of reflex this time, but because he still felt her there. Her kiss. That soft, fleeting touch. That moment of warmth he didn't expect and wasn't prepared for.

He closed his eyes.

Why did it feel so big? So significant?

It was just a peck.

Just a moment.

But to Jin… it was everything.

Because Mian wasn't someone who gave affection easily. She wasn't careless with touch. If she reached out to you — it meant something. He knew that. He felt that.

And now, his guarded heart, the one he had buried beneath years of discipline, silence, and control… was suddenly wide open.

He made his way into the living room and sank slowly into the couch, his thoughts louder than the silence in the house. The lamp above him cast a dim golden light, but all he could see was her.

The way she smiled before she kissed him.

The way she ran away like she was afraid of what she had just done.

The way she looked back from the car — that one-second glance that undid him completely.

He leaned forward, elbows on his knees, head in his hands.

What was this feeling?

Hope?

Fear?

Both?

She was meeting Ji Hoon tonight. That much was clear. And Jin hated that the thought stirred something sharp inside him. Not jealousy exactly — he could live with her having friends. But the idea of someone else hearing her laugh, watching her eyes light up the way he used to see them…

It made something ache in him.

And yet, he refused to question her. He refused to make her feel like she was being watched, or controlled, or judged.

Because that wasn't love.

That was fear pretending to be love.

And Jin had made himself a silent vow: If I ever get the chance to love her properly, I will never love her with fear.

Still, tonight…

Tonight hurt a little.

But that kiss — that one small kiss — was like a whisper from her heart. A message only he was meant to hear.

"Wait for me. I'm still finding my way back."

He leaned back on the couch, resting his head against the cushion, eyes on the ceiling, heart full of silent chaos.

A soft, tired smile curved his lips.

She hadn't said it with words.

But she had said something.

And Jin would hold onto that — not with desperation, but with quiet belief.

tonight, she had chosen him — even if just for a second.

That was enough to keep him breathing.

That was enough to hope.
