Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 – The Guardian’s Test

The cold winds of Skardu sliced through the night, howling like ancient spirits stirred from slumber. Zahra stood at the edge of a cliff, her silver-crystal staff glowing faintly, its light barely holding back the shadows creeping in from the surrounding mountains. Snowflakes spiraled in the air, each one carrying whispers — voices of the lost, the forgotten, the waiting.

Behind her, the Circle of the Veil had taken refuge in a cave that hadn't been touched by sunlight for centuries. Inside, arcane runes glowed along the walls, activated by Zahra's blood earlier that evening. The cave wasn't just a shelter — it was a testing ground. And tonight, Zahra would face her Guardian's Test.

Mufti Rafiq approached her silently, his robes heavy with snow and time.

"The test is not to measure your strength," he said, his breath fogging in the cold. "It's to uncover your fracture… the one your enemy will exploit."

Zahra turned, eyes dark with sleeplessness. "What if I fail?"

"You won't," Rafiq replied. "But if you fear it… then you already have."

Before she could reply, the cave entrance shimmered. The Guardians stood within, encircling the sacred platform now glowing in golden-blue symbols. One by one, they began to chant in different tongues — languages not found in any modern scripture.

Zahra stepped forward, her hand tightening around the staff. As she entered the circle, the temperature dropped. Her heart began to pound.

A pulse of light shot upward — a column of blinding energy that swallowed her whole.

Inside the Trial

When Zahra opened her eyes, she was no longer in the cave.

She stood in the middle of Noor General Hospital — but it was empty. Silent. Dark.

Monitors beeped in hollow rhythm. The walls were riddled with cracks. The floor was littered with surgical masks and old, dusty bandages. Her footsteps echoed down the corridor, each one answered by a distant cry.

"Hello?" she called, her voice shaky.

No answer.

She turned the corner — and gasped.

There, in the ER, lay Arif. But not as he had been. His body was torn, eyes open and lifeless. Around him were the ghostly forms of the patients Zahra had failed to save — dozens of them. Old women. Children. Burn victims. Accident victims.

Each one pointed a pale finger at her.

"You should have saved us."

"Noor died because of you."

"You are no Guardian. You are a curse."

Zahra stumbled backward, hands shaking. "This isn't real—"

"It's real enough," a voice whispered.

She turned.

Her mother stood there. But not the gentle woman she remembered. This version was cold, her eyes hollow.

"You were never meant to carry this burden. You think magic can replace mercy?"

Zahra dropped to her knees. "I'm trying… I've done everything I could—"

"Then why is the world burning?" her mother screamed.

The hospital melted into flame.

Walls collapsed.

The ceiling cracked.

Zahra screamed, covering her head as fire rained down —

And then…

Silence.

Darkness.

A heartbeat.

She opened her eyes.

The Mirror

Now she stood in front of a massive mirror in an endless void.

In the reflection: Zahra.

But this Zahra's eyes glowed red.

She smiled cruelly.

"You think you're the Last Flame?" the reflection sneered. "You're just a flicker — easily extinguished."

Zahra raised her staff.

"So be it."

The mirror shattered.

And her darker self leapt out.

They fought.

Blow for blow. Magic against magic. Light against shadow.

Each strike echoed through the void like thunder. Zahra's staff clashed against dark Zahra's blade of bone.

"You carry the Book," the shadow hissed, "but you fear what's written in it."

A blast of energy knocked Zahra backward. She fell, bleeding, gasping.

The dark Zahra raised her blade to finish it.

"Mercy," Zahra whispered, eyes welling.

The blade froze.

The shadow blinked.

And then dropped her weapon.

Tears streamed from her dark eyes. "I was never your enemy. I was your fear."

Zahra stood. "Then be part of me. But never lead me again."

She reached forward — and embraced her darker self.

They merged in a burst of light.

The void crumbled.

And she woke.

Back in the Cave

Zahra opened her eyes with a gasp.

The Guardians stared in silence.

Her hair glowed slightly. Her heartbeat pulsed like a drum. The staff had changed — now crowned with a crystal that shimmered like the sun and moon combined.

Mufti Rafiq stepped forward.

"You have passed," he said, voice thick with emotion. "You faced your guilt. And made peace with your power."

Zahra stood.

Taller.

Stronger.

Quieter.

The cave shivered as a gust of wind passed through — the spirits acknowledging her transformation.

Elsewhere: The Bone Collector's Ritual

In a valley south of Gilgit, the Bone Collector prepared a ritual using the remains of forgotten saints. Candles burned black. The skies above turned crimson.

Twelve figures circled him — the remaining Shadowed Ones.

"We strike the Flame before she reaches her second awakening," he growled.

A gate opened in the sky — a fissure in time.

A serpent spirit emerged — made of ash and bone.

"Seek her," the Bone Collector commanded. "Poison her visions."

The creature hissed and vanished into the wind.

Zahra's Vision

That night, as Zahra rested, she dreamed of a field of stars. The ground was made of silver mist. And at the center — a massive temple that pulsed with light.

A voice echoed, "The Hall of Origins awaits."

When she awoke, she told Mufti Rafiq.

He nodded gravely. "It's in the Rub' al Khali. The Empty Quarter. No one who enters survives the night."

Zahra stood.

"Then I'll go by day."

Closing Scene

As the sun rose over the Karakoram, Zahra stood on a high ridge. Snow blew around her like spirits dancing.

She no longer feared the darkness.

Because she was the storm now.

The Mystic Surgeon had passed the test.

The true war had yet to begin.

But Zahra was ready.
