I woke with a start, momentarily disoriented as I blinked at the unfamiliar ceiling above me. The events of last night crashed back - the nightmare, coming to Kaelen's room, and those unexpected moments in his arms.
My cheeks burned at the memory of his unconscious touches. I quickly glanced beside me, relieved to find the space empty. Kaelen must have already left for the day.
This was my chance.
I sat up, scanning the room. Morning light streamed through the curtains, illuminating his perfectly organized space. My gaze landed on his dresser where I had spotted him retrieving a small key once before, thinking I wasn't paying attention.
I slipped out of bed, my bare feet silent against the hardwood floor. At the dresser, I carefully slid open the top drawer, feeling beneath the neatly folded clothes until my fingers brushed against something cool and metallic.
"Got you," I whispered, pulling out the small silver key.
